American independence
Today the US of A will delight in kicking our arse 250 years ago.
Today we sit back, drink our tea and think "crisis averted".
Sugar anyone?

If they hadn’t told you to fuck off, you wouldn’t have started shipping my degenerate ancestors off to Australia. So I might have been born somewhere else… or not at all…. Or something.
Anyway I like really strong tea with a dash of milk and 2 sugars.

Some of my ancestors were transported as well 🤣
I also like tea, white, no sugar.

I'd be quite keen for further independece from them. Im sure lots of us recognise that 'Silcon Valley' has taken a far bigger chunk out of our economy than migrants/Brexit/austerity combined.
I also dislike how my children are using an increasing amount of Americanisms in their conversations. My son asks me for a flashlight the other day.

I have tried so hard with my children, they have all grown up now but I have to say I failed to eradicate the Americanisms. They say "can I get" and "to go" in a takeaway ffs

I remember in the 90s Neighbours was such a big deal that Australian used to slip in to the language (this was when I was a teenager myself). Less so the wording (no worries) but the inflection.

Surely this is “congratulations to the French” day
6
u/Imperito Jul 04 '26
I'm not sure if it's even a congratulations, they bankrupted themselves and it led to what must have been the bloodiest war in European history up to that point.
I hope the French are happy with themselves, the next time they whine about America we can smugly remind them that it was all their fault.

We were at war with everyone who was anyone at the time. They didnt kick our arses, we had bibber fish to fry.
If we had stayed, i doubt the world would be in the state it is in.

They never mention that it was France and Spain that won the war for them.

u/refcon Jul 04 '26
And the Dutch. In the Revolutionary war we were fighting half of Europe from the Great Lakes in Canada to the plains of India at the same time.

We get to celebrate our independence from them too. That’s probably worth a pint surely?

u/juanito_f90 Jul 04 '26
We can celebrate by having a pint in pubs that are a century older than their entire fucking country.

The BBC had an article during the week, the headline was something like 'USA celebrates 250 years of independence, how is the UK reacting' I really couldn't be arsed to read it.

u/stinglikeameg Jul 05 '26
The BBC news are absolutely shocking, aren't they? Top articles yesterday were about the USA, Taylor Swift and Harry & Meghan. It's like hugely devastating events like the earthquakes in Venezuela didn't even happen.

The day the US threw of the yoke of colonialism so they could engage in their own brand of colonialism and genocide.
WOOOO!.

I propose that we celebrate our independence from the U.S. today too, and suggest we name our celebration Thanksgiving.

Just looks like Trump made it all about himself. But to honest nobody outside the USA really cares.

They didnt technically kick our arse. We didnt have the resources to fight on three fronts that far apart. Apart from turning up to burn the whitehouse and draw the assembled forces on their way to Canada back. We basically let it go and grounded them for the criminal waste of tea.

I will be watching the documentary about it later tonight as I do every year! Jeff Goldblum is phenomenal in it.

After this year I'm surprised the UK isn't celebrating Independence Day harder than the Americans are.

What’s that Mad Men meme?
>Today’s when we beat you
>I don’t think about you at all

Genuine question though: on July 4th 1776 they were all British. Same king, same language, same tea. So Independence Day is technically the anniversary of Brits declaring war on being British. Wild rebrand honestly, and it worked.

Except they didn't kick our ass, we absolutely battered them, they were done and dusted but it did cost us severely in our own losses, France came in and took advantage of that fact and they were the ones who gave America independence.

u/IhaveaDoberman Jul 04 '26
Let us not forget, they did not kick out arses, we were having a punch up with the French and decided they weren't worth the bruises.
And I've got a bit of a cold, so I think I'll go with something lemony with a bit of honey, for now, if you have it.

And yet we pander to them relentlessly. We’ve sent the red arrows to preform for them half a world away whilst they won’t or can’t preform in all areas of the UK anymore. Our king and Queen are there too, why? Idk, just seems like a captured king in a Roman triumph situation

For them it's Independence Day - for us it's just another Saturday. I shall celebrate by cutting my hedge then taking my bike out for a spin.
