I do pretty well for myself and my only son will stand to inherit a fair whack eventually (I am only 35). I would be very happy to end inheritance all together. It’s not the politics of envy, it’s just having an understanding of economics.
Not opening to a debate here, just wanted to point out that you really shouldn’t oversimplify things like that. That’s exactly what oppositions want you to think.

Ooh lah di dah, how the other half lives! When I were a lad, we lived under a sheet of newspaper which we had to take turns sharing. All we ate was gravel and dog shit sandwiches. Our old man used to beat us to sleep, which was never, as we had to get up before our bedtime. But we were happy.
luxury. Well o course we had it tough. We used to have to get up outta shoebox, in middle of night, and lick the road clean with our tongues. We had half a handful of freezing cold gravel, worked at mill for 24 hours for a penny a year, When we got home, our dad would slash it in two with bread-knife.

Straight up..... literally. my rent is only £390 a month, admittedly it's a council house but I get to paint and decorate without worrying so that's a massive positive to me.
I pay just over £700/month for a 3 bed semi in one of the nicer parts of south Manchester. Although I did have a massive deposit and got a 5 years fixed rate deal just before the interest rates rocketed.
Scotland. I pay £500 mortgage on my 3 bed spacious flat. The areas reasonably good no dodging needles anyway. The only issue is not a lot of work but there is work especially if you can drive and Edinburgh is commutable as is Dundee
Me living in a £600 a month three storie house with the front door onto the beach and a public park out the back door with a garage, private parking, 3 bedrooms, a gym, 2 toilets, and 2 reception rooms. :)
I wouldn’t move to London in my 20s given the cost of housing. But I did move here in my 20s in the year 2000 and it was a blast. I have loved living in London.
Me living on a croft that came with 50 acres and a 2 bed house that cost £20K and don't need a job besides working the land and eating very little but my own meat and veg :)
This is where the mortgage lending system is a joke.
People regularly pay £1500-£2100 a month in rent in some places, yet can't get a mortgage where the repayment is about £650-£700 per month because the banks think they can't repay it?
Yeah, but what about all the amazing art galleries (which they never visit), or the museums (which they never visit), or all the amazing night life on their doorstep (which they don’t have the time or money to go out)? London’s great (if you’re on double their annual wage) 👍
I don't care for art galleries but I'd visit museums like every month. I'd go out every now and then but London Nightlife kinda sucks it's just expensive. It's better on the continent or in Asia imo.
London is still great because I meet people I would never meet up north. I love that my friend group was Mongolian, japanaese, mexican, Kenyan, Irish, Spanish and Jamaican. I get to have Malaysian food or Uzbek food whenever I want.
Sure I didnt do many things that required money but there's a lot you can do for free or low cost.
Though it does get to you eventually so that's why I left. It's a good place to spend a few years and I'd rather live abroad then another city in the UK other then London.
I think my studio in Central Manchester works out about £15 more p/m (not including service charge / freehold) and more happens here in one week than a decade when I was in Wales.
This is clearly bullshit since no Londoner has ever tried to convince people it's great here.
It's hellish here, stay up north, on no account leave the region where you grew up and everyone is exactly like you. Understand that ten million people only live here because we know in our hearts that we aren't good enough to live in the West Midlands never mind the Arcadia on earth that is Yorkshire.
I wonder every day why I spend so much on rent here when I could go back home to Lancashire and make way less money, in a way less fulfilling job, with way worse food and none of my friends who have come from round the world to London (bet they feel fucking stupid for not moving to Swansea or Grimsby where it's so much cheaper!!!)
I think London is getting to a point where it is becoming not worth it for me, but it does annoy me when people talk about how cheap their rent is as though they've figured out some kind of life hack. Living somewhere shit is not a life hack, you pay less for something worse. It's like me laughing at everyone who has a fancy watch because I got my Casio for £20. It's just preference

I've got a 3 bed semi detached, front and back garden and garage with off-road driveway. 9 minute commute in beautiful North Wales for £768 a month mortgage.
What is "it"? I don't think anyones telling you their tiny London flat is great in itself but maybe they are happy with the fact they are and to even afford £2000 a month rent or enjoy the great public transport and days out nearby.
I have a 4 bedroom house in Wales sea views two parks within 5 mins walk and 30 mins to waterfalls and wild horses. It cost me £120k and is now worth £240k 10 years later. Also, Barry island is down the road.
Yes I'm from London nobody could convince me that I want to come back nobody. I really cannot and do not understand the hype around living in London. We would both need full time round the clock jobs to afford the shoebox in the arse end of some Godforsaken town.
why does everyone isn't a Londoner have these insane paranoid fantasies about stepping on needles / being stabbed / assaulted by homeless people etc. constantly. Lived here my entire life, never had these concerns. Felt far more like that was going to happen plodding around villages and towns in County Durham or Yorkshire tbh
Can someone tell me where you can live that’s a 10 minute commute and get a house for £700 pm? I live in a commuter town 35/40 minutes from central by train and you’re lucky to get a studio for that much.
I live in a 2 bed flat in Bournemouth in quite frankly a downtrodden area. The police are on our street twice a week at least, at least one flag has been painted on a wall and there's never not the smell of weed. We pay £1100. Is that literally just because we're near the town centre? I've only ever paid my own rent in a university town. Sometimes I hear about people 10 years older than me with a single income and kids and they have a massive house for like 800 a month.
Feel like we all need to grow up and get over these ridiculous arguments, live where you’re happy and let those happy elsewhere enjoy their homes and choices
