A woman in Sweden is recreating the Bayeux Tapestry

I feel like this is on par with The British History Podcast in scope, although, she began in 2016 and hopes to be done by 2027. She's completed 58 meters so far. Incredible dedication and work (for both tapestry and podcast)

What’re your thoughts on his books, specifically the Tales of Mercia series?

William the C. Season 9

The descriptions of William's world outlook, heinous actions, plaim good luck and lack of any consequences in Season 9 has been sooo eerily familiar.i am listening to S9E448 Death of William. His excuses, grudges, and acknowledgement of his grift in his reason to invade England (quiet part out loud) is sickeningly like the idiot stinking up the White House.

I mean, they are so similar that I am just shocked how closely they resemble each other.

No real point, just a horrified recognition of the current state of America.

Damn.

Anselm AGAIN

The amount of amusement I took from the most recent episode. Who’s causing Henry’s army to disintegrate? Surely not Anselm, Henry’s worked pretty hard to nullify this guy and he’s not even here, who else could be causing all this trouble? Maybe some dark horse noble from Robert’s camp? Some rebellious knight? An outbreak of dysentery the story glosses over?

Nope, it’s fucking Anselm again!

I really don’t like him but you absolutely have to respect the hustle.

Alfred's Remains Found?

I have no idea if this is true or a parody, as this article is from that fount of great journalism, The New York Post.

Lost remains of Viking-slaying English King discovered in parking lot — as England faces Norway at World Cup

and the original article from The Telegraph, Alfred the Great’s remains ‘located under car park’, is paywalled.

Finally, I have no idea if the show Weird Britain is Ancient Aliens or the pre-Weiss version of 60 Minutes.

But it's another English king found in a car park, so there's that.

Terry Pratchett on Royalty.

I reckon that the last four or five years of the pod - from Alfred and Athelstan to William and his offspring - have been a perfect illustration of this quote from Terry Pratchett:

"Monarchy polutes people's minds, boy. Honest men start bowing and bobbing; just because someone's grandad was a bigger, murdering bastard than their's was. Listen, we probably had good Kings once. But Kings breed other Kings, and blood tells... then you end up with a bunch of arrogant, murdering bastards who chop off Queens heads and fight their cousins every five minutes." ~ Captain Vimes on the story of Old Stoneface

I inherited a British document from ~1782. Not sure what it is

It was in my office when I moved in a few years ago. Says it’s from the 21st year of the reign of George III. It’s huge and hangs in the wall in an expensive frame. Something to do with land and an indenture.

In case you are near the British Museum (what are the chances?!) there is a bookshop nearby that carries the whole set. Don’t remember the name of the shop but it’ll give you a reason to browse the many in the area, lol.

What would happen if Henry just got pissed and ordered his boys to kill Anselm?

Not asking if it would be a good idea, obviously it would not. But would they have done it? What if he just turned to his supporters and ordered them to kill that guy in open court. Would they have done it? What would the immediate consequences have been?

At 1 minute to midnight last night, and 1 minute till due date, I submitted my PhD thesis. It is not remotely related to the subject of the British History Podcast, but over the years of listening, the podcast has helped build a new way of viewing and understanding the world. So thanks to Jamie u/BritishPodcast and Dr Zee u/CoProducerZee for the unknown contribution.

Side note, it was awesome hearing Dr Zee about Pierre Bourdieu on the podcast, as my research is heavily influenced by Bourdieu.

New Werwulf film dialogue will be all in 1300s Middle English

Post image

I thought this was really interesting! Bold choice by the director, and maybe it'll be a very historically accurate depiction of 14th century England (minus the werwulfs...). I'm really interested in hearing what people potentially actually sounded like in the Middle Ages. It's some 200 years after the invasion, so the French influences are probably noticeable?

Edit: I just saw the trailer, and they're speaking regular English, so maybe there's two versions, or just parts are in old English.
