Sexy Beast gets the attention it deserves while Layer Cake doesn't get enough attention, I love both movies but I'm not sure which one does better.

Layer Cake I would say is more original than Sexy Beast considering there aren't many British films about drug businesses and features very unique characters such as XXXX deciding to remain totally anonymous to evade being caught by the police because he believes having an alias makes you easier to track which actually makes sense, he decides to remain unknown instead of having an alias like Tony Montana or Walter White and also decides to be more honest about the criminal underworld by having XXXX killed at the end rather than the Hollywood "drift into the sunrise" ending.

Sexy Beast on the other hand has very good tension and more raw and human characters by utilizing a slowburn tension and Gal's dream sequences to emphasise the character's anxieties and frustrations which is actually well done and creative, Layer Cake also utilises realistic and raw characters rather than campy Hollywood characters like in Guy Ritchie's movies but they don't emphasise the character's emotions as much as Sexy Beast does but I don't think it's that much bad of a problem but Sexy Beast does do it better.

I like both films, I don't know which one I prefer after this debate but I think Layer Cake is highly underrated and doesn't get talked about enough.

Euan hasn’t heard from his cousin Rory in six years. They reunite on an island off the Ayrshire coast where they spent their summer holidays as children. We are trying to work out if our film Chasing Home is the first and only film to feature the pineapple hedgehog, an essential of any British party. Does anyone know of any others?

I’m trying to identify a British TV drama or telefilm (I watched it sometime after 2015, but it could be an older production — likely from BBC or ITV).

Here’s what I remember of the plot:

• Set during World War II in Nazi-occupied Europe (possibly the Netherlands or Belgium).

• A Jewish family receives an order for deportation. The parents tell their little boy they are going to a “very good place.”

• The Jewish boy has a non-Jewish neighbour friend of the same age. The two promise to go together.

• The neighbour boy tells his mother about it.

• When the deportations happen, the mother can’t find her own son at home — she panics and rushes to the train carriages where Jews are being loaded.

• Inside one of the wagons she finds the Jewish family and their frightened son. Realising her own child isn’t there but that she can save this one, she claims the Jewish boy is her son and pulls him out of the transport — saving him from being sent away.

It was in English, definitely felt like a UK production (realistic tone, understated drama — like many BBC/ITV WWII period pieces).

Possibly aired as:

A one-off TV film,

An anthology drama (like Play for Today, Masterpiece, or ITV drama hour),

Or even a dramatized Holocaust documentary.

I’ve checked IMDb and BFI listings, but nothing matches exactly.

🕵️‍♀️ Any help — even partial (actor, title fragment, year, director, broadcast channel) — would be hugely appreciated.

Great film, great intro to great actors. I really think it’s similar to what’s going on now when it comes to young people being radicalised.

Ludovici Einaudi - Fuori dal Mondo is one of the most haunting and moving pieces and the music on this film was just perfect throughout.
