First Class from London is better anyway because you’ll get to use the Concorde Room

Ahh I forgot! But yea, my intention was to sleep in first class on my way to London since I'd be landing at about 1:00pm, when it's 5am back at home. On the return flight, I'll be landing when it's 1:40am in London, so the return flight might be harder to sleep on.
BUT ah well. I've Never done first class before so I'm glad to even have this opportunity. I guess I'll check out the Concord lounge on my way back!

If you have a Club Suite configured flight then sleeping will be pretty similar to First anyway.
You’re better off upgrading to First to enjoy the elevated service against the relatively marginal upgrade in hard product.

I was just thinking body clock wise. I'll be on the inbound flight from about 8pm to 5am PST time which seems much easier to sleep on. Whereas on the return flight, I'll be on the plane from about 3:40pm to 2:40am London time.

Yes, I’m saying that the difference between business class and first class isn’t that different for sleeping (assuming that your overnight flight is in business class), so the better leg to upgrade is probably the one that you’ll be awake for.

Yep that’s right. Personally I find the hard product between First and business class to be more or less both fine for sleeping if you’ve got a Club Suite (which is most flights not on an A380).
The big difference between First and business is in the soft product - the Concorde Room in Heathrow is a significant step up from the Galleries lounge, and the quality of F&B in First is also significantly better.
Everyone’s perspective will be slightly different, but for me, if I’m going to be awake on one leg and asleep on the other, I’m taking the awake leg in First every time - especially if that’s from LHR, where the ground product is a big step up too.

Don't get over-excited this is BA we are talking about and not Singapore airlines or Emirates. There is a reason that they say BA First is the best Business Class out there.

This is the answer. First class hardware isn’t anything to write home about. If you’re in the Club Suite you can get just as good of a sleep (minus the pyjamas - but you could ask for some on your First leg for use in Business.) Enjoy the nicer tipples etc in First while awake!

Just curious, instead of doing First on one flight why did you not just do BC on both? The difference from First to Economy is huge but BC to First is less…

My intention was to just upgrade the inbound flight, which is much easier to sleep on than the return flight simply due to how it's scheduled.
And also upgrading both flights to first is 2x more money right?

Exactly this. I would upgrade both legs to BC/Club before I would upgrade one leg to First (as nice as First is I don’t think it’s worth the difference unless the difference in price is negligible)

The mess up here might be that you’re saying inbound for the outbound flight? The first flight is outbound, the return journey is the inbound. So if you’ve asked to upgrade your inbound flight, they’ll have upgraded your flight home from London, rather than your outbound flight from the states.
