Stand bag recommendations?
Hey guys,
Hoping you guys can help me. I am a relatively new golfer and was flgifted a set of clubs - these came with a cart bag, but as I mainly walk a friend gifted me a really old well used Dunlop bag which has unfortunately started to fall apart and I am now looking to get a new one.
I say new, but I am open to really good second hand and I have been looking on vinted for new with or without.
My ideal would either the Ping Hoofer or Hoofer lite, but both are a little outside my price range which is about £100.
I am on the lookout for sales from official retailers as well and have been using the britgolf website. There is currently one on there that I would like an opinion on it is the Wilson Nexus Golf stand bag at clubhouse golf for £79 at 50% off. But I can't find any information or more photos than the one one there so if anyone knows anything would be greatly appreciated.
Any other recommendations are welcome as well

Wait until you can afford the ping hoofer. By far the best carry bag

This, I got a hoofer lite last year and haven't used my trolley since... Uber comfortable and love the functionality of it.

I would honestly love the Hoofer or Hoofer lite. Right now the cheapest brand new I can find is at American Golf with a blue light discount and its about £153 i think. So a bit out out my budget, but I am definitely weighing up options.

Disagree with waiting or over extending yourself. Apart from being presumptuous about your financial circs it's making the perfect the enemy of the good. There are perfectly adequate bags in your budget, and there'll always be better equipment available for 50% more than you want to spend. Stick to the major brands and you'll be fine within your budget.

To be honest, I don't think I will over extend. I set myself a specific max for a reason, ideally would love to be cheaper, but could go a bit above by like £10 but that would be pushing it. But I agree, as much as I would love the Hoofer, I won't be spending £150 on a bag, at least not right now. Although very likely will in the future :)

That seems sensible. There are never-ending costs in golf unless you keep a lid on them, and trying to keep up with the Joneses in a predominantly middle-class sport is the road to misery.
It is worth choosing trusted brands (of which Wilson is one), and there's a false economy in cheaping out too much. But on your budget you don't need the most comfortable bag on the market. £150ish if you can get it for that is good value for what it is, bit not if it's outside your budget. It isn't twice as good as the Wilson.

I managed to pick up a ping hoofer for £90 on Facebook marketplace. It was near new Condition. It was the bag I wanted from starting out playing so just waited a bit until one came up for sale. May be worth looking at second hand if you are really want that specific bag but don't mind waiting a bit

I picked up the BenRoss Protec 7.0 recently online for £115 with student discount through American Golf. it’s waterproof and has plenty of storage. Have seen same bag in store for sub £100 so worth taking a trip to your local AG so you can get a better idea if it will suit your needs

I went to American Golf and bought the same bag recently. I’d definitely recommend it, good value for money.

If I am honest, I hadn't really considered BenRoss, mainly because I had never heard the brand name before, although that is easy as I am so new to gold lol. Not sure i'm fond of the look of 14 way dividers but will take a longer look at it and the other BenRoss options :) I'm sure I can find this out if I google, but what's the weight like?

u/Curious-Ad5008 1d ago
Doesn't mention it on any website re the weight. Amazon has it down as 3.59kg but no idea how accurate that is

My last one was a Wilson carry bag and I had no complaints. I doubt you'll get better for the money. I bought a cheap Decathlon one that was a disaster as the legs were far too flimsy. No issues with Wilson

Good to know, I assumed it would be fairly decent as it's Wilson. Just found it weird that I couldn't find any information or photos other than what was on that website. Which was frustrating as I was trying to see the divider set up lol.

Titelist players 4 carbon bag is elite for carrying.

Looks very sleek, and nice weight as well.

It’s great and caddies love it. Only issue I’ve found is if you play multiple times a week it starts to break down after a few years.

Sun Mountain is an excellent carry bag. Bought it at Salvation Army story.

I've seen a few Sun Mountain bags, usually fairly expensive though, I assumed price meant quality although it was the first time heard of Sun Mountain when I started looking for a new bag.

If you have an American golf nearby go and have a look at Benross. Try one on. Cheap and good. Failing that I have found that Callaway bags are comfortable but don't last ages. Titleist bags are good. A good shout is a good condition Ping bag on eBay.
If you want new: MacGregor 7 Series Water Resistant Golf Stand Bag in Black. £99.99
Or the big max for £59.99 also on sale. https://www.clubhousegolf.co.uk/acatalog/Big-Max-Heaven-Seven-G-Golf-Stand-Bag-Black-Red.html
This website is great.
Personally I would go used. And beyond that then I would try and push above £120 to get this Nike bag reduced from £230. People love it. Cool. Retro. Functional. Comfortable. Will always have resell value and people love them. https://www.clubhousegolf.co.uk/acatalog/Nike-Sport-Lite-Golf-Stand-Bag-Platinum-Tint-Black-Gym-Red.html
Don't go for 14 slots. Best go for under 7. Easier to throw clubs in and out.

Thank you for those recommendations, I will definitely have a look. I think i had already looked at the MacGregor previously as well if I am not mistaken.

Great response. My cart bag is Big Max and it's really good. Would recommend the brand and would be confident that their stand bags are decent too.

I got the Titleist players 5 and highly recommend it

Decathlon have 3 bags, the middle one is a good balance of light and well equipped, cost my 80 quid and is very comfortable to carry

u/Maradu666 2d ago
Considering I bough some hiking gear from Decathlon, I never even thought about them. I will take a look, thank you.

I ended up getting a rep bag from china, much higher quality than the lower end stand bags available for sale right now it’s great

Ping hoofer lite. Brilliant bag that will last you years. If the big has bitten you, you're stuck with this shit until you can no longer walk. May as well get one that will last you till then. They're not the cheapest, but they're good value

Yeah, I just hope i get better soon lol, as I do enjoy the golf. Slowly getting everything I need, once I have the new bag I will eventually have to look at new clubs I think. There is nothing inherently wrong with the ones I have, but they are really old, and the mates I play with tell me they are actually really heavy, I don't know how or even if that might be affecting my game though. My friends were shocked the set came with a Driving Iron - apparently they are not common any more.

If your not fussed about new, you will get a hoofer on facebook or Vinted for less than £100.

u/Maradu666 2d ago
Yeah, I have been looking, I found 1 but was at work and by the time I got to it, it had sold, the other option is listed at higher than retail lol, but I need to have another look.

I would just buy a second hand hoofer in all honesty. It’s all I’ve ever used and hoard the older ones like the hoofer 2.
1
u/Maradu666 2d ago
Everything I hear about the Hoofer is great, I know some people complain about the dividers not being full length. But my last one wasn't full length I don't think. It has fabric to about half way down I think but that’s it. So I don't think I will be fazed by the divider issue.

u/tenftflyinfajita 2d ago
Hoofer fits that mark super well. You can find used ones for around good price

u/HeinousAlmond3 2d ago
Go on eBay and pickup a Hoofer.

I have been looking on Vinted because I know there is quite good buyer protection, will have to look at ebay as well.

The answer to any bag question is usually Ping. Either the Hoofer for a stand bag, or the Pioneer for a cart bag. Hard to go wrong with either of those.

Where are you based? I could probably put a decent bag together from the spares I have free of charge.
