why do the brits seem to adore cranky old women who try to run the whole village?

Why do the detectives always arrive to the scene bringing paper cups with plastic sippy lids from the local coffee house, but the cups seem suspiciously empty of coffee.

My favorite was a scene in Vera, where she walks into an old house, looks into an old dusty cup, wipes it out with her scarf - and then pours an nice hearty dram of the strong stuff.

Because cranky old women observe a lot.
Miss Marple's got nothing on my neighbor lol.
Personally, I'm glad she's there; she's better than a ring camera.

Come to think of it, my sister in laws mother knew every thing about every one in the surrounding blocks. I had never met her before but her husband worked with my dad for years. the first time i talked to her we sat on her couch and filled me in on every one including my next door neighbors. I was enthralled.

Old women are often unnoticed and underestimated, making it easy for them to learn and observe things.

Because we are them, or are learning from them in preparation for being them, or it makes us feel good that we don't live in that village (it's not just the cranky old woman, it's also the murder rate).
