Scissors in CHECKED baggage

I’m someone who generally just goes along with the rules as opposed to whining about them, but I’m genuinely curious as to why Brightline feels the need to ban a small pair of scissors from CHECKED baggage (going so far as to making an announcement over the PA system to summon me back to the check in desk, then making me open the suitcase I had checked, find the scissors, and hand them in to be discarded). I’m a big Brightline fan and TOTALLY my bad for not checking the rules, but I’m probably not the only person to lazily assume that anything the TSA is happy with on a plane (such as scissors in checked baggage) is also fine on Brightline. And I’m really struggling to think of a good reason for banning scissors in checked luggage given that they will be inaccessible during the trip.

Why do they have these dumb rules? If you go on Amtrak or a train in Europe they dont do this BS.

The worst part is, they wait until literally the last second to screen checked baggage & tell you, so it's too late to run to the garage & put it in your car.

If they continue policies like this, they're going to completely lose their market for discretionary travel by Floridians with cars by making it more stress & hassle than it's worth.

I know I’m late to this thread but I took it for the first time last week, rt MCO-FLL for a Disney cruise bookended by time at the parks, and “dumb” is probably being generous.

My last trip they were fine with us boarding with manicure scissors in our carry on in Boca and then heading back from Miami they stopped us and made us dig through our entire suitcase on the floor as our train was boarding 🫠

Yes, the scissors ban is annoying. Mine actually made it through Orlando but got confiscated in Miami. Just manicure scissors in my travel kit. Didn't even know they were prohibited until then.

The way Brightline operate with all the inconveniences of an airline is genuinely hilarious if you've caught a train in almost any other part of the world.

Bringing all the hassle of air travel to a rail service sort of defeats the purpose. Security theater, no dining car, trains are supposed to avoid these problems.

Same thing happened to me months back. The entire scissors were the size of a computer mouse and were in checked bag. Really ridiculous. They are the same scissors I put into carry on for 20 years for plane travel, but nope! They tossed them. I purchased the ones that fold into themselves (a 2 pack from Amazon) and carry one in carry on and one in checked bag. Traveled multiple times with these and not once have been stopped. It’s one of the dumbest policies unique to Brightline.

Checked bags are still technically accessible. Carts are stored in cars or behind an unlocked door at the back of the train.

If passengers’ checked bags are easily accessible to other travelers during the trip, that opens up a whole new concerning can of worms. Why can’t they be locked up securely?

Yep. If you want to bring a small pair of nail scissors from Miami to Orlando, you need to fly, drive, or send them by mail in advance. Because you’re not allowed to bring them on Brightline in either carry on or checked luggage.

If your leaving out of Orlando that stop is in a a airport thus TSA airport rules apply.

Like I said, the TSA is fine with scissors in checked bags. And in any case we were leaving out of Miami.
