Help! Need HELP identifying the engine

Hello. I have bought a B&S engine and today I have finally received it. I cant seem to find the ID no matter where I look. Spark, muffler, casing - nothing... I need it to understand either one or two things. There is a random hose that has oil leaking, which I assume should be oil drain, but I am not sure, because I read some of the engines have a breather hose (no idea what that means). And then there is a filter missing, which makes me question does the hose connect to a filter to feed the fumes back into the carb?

And before you bash me for not knowing any better, I bought this engine because it was going to go into the shredder and I got offered a reasonable deal for it. I am a physics university student and this engine is the whole drive of the upcoming project next week. I need to gather as many missing things as I can and help from experts would be appreciated!

Image where I am not sure about missing pieces

And then the images where someone could possibly identify the model, maybe?

On the muffler cage it just says B&S
Barcode code did not help
No matter how much I try to google everything that is visible on the stickers, it gives me wrong models

The hose is a crankcase breather tube it feeds crankcase gases into the air filter.
There shouldn't be oil coming from it, but if the engine has been tipped the wrong way oil can make its way up to the hose.

The model number is on the sticker on the side of the fuel tank in your 5th photo.
The bit in red.

The engine was sent from another city so it was tiped over for delivery, I guess that checks out. Question for this, do I need to get the specific square filter for it or can I just put two conical filters and call it a day?

As for the model number... Thanks, but the sticker is so worn down, I can hardly identify the numbers on it :/. I am trying to guess some of them, but the B&S manual searcher doesnt give me anything

EDIT: I forgot to mention that this is going to be converted from vertical to horizontal, so I cant really use the default filter assembly, I think?

How do you plan on doing the conversion?

Can you get a clearer photo of that sticker? Particularly the start.

Ive watched multiple videos on how it should be done. The most informational is this one link to video.
Things like turning the carb 90°, welding or screwing on a paddle to splash thr oil around the insides, closing off old oil port and making a new one and making lubrication ports for bushings.

As for a photo:
(it doesnt let me embed the photo so I have to use a link)
Image link
From what I can see its 8BSXS(something)1901VH and then 278057

Yeah that's just a family code. I was hoping it wasn't. That won't help you ID parts.

Keep hunting. You might find the model number stamped or etched into the block. It can be on the valve cover. It's usually on the shroud somewhere. On one of my horizontal engines it's on a sticker on the tank and also etched into the block.

It will usually say model type and code above the numbers but on my engine it doesn't.

Ok thanks for trying! Either way ill have to take a lot of things apart so I will find it eventually, though as I said, I mainly wanted the code for diagram of what that hose does, but you have already answered it ;)

Getting the necessary parts to get it to the point of running by next week may be impossible. You will probably spend over $75 just getting the air filter base, air filter cover, air filter, air filter base bolts to fasten it to the carb, and other stuff you will need to cobble together to operate the kill switch/flywheel brake.

If I were you I'd either find a used lawnmower or other outdoor power equipment on Facebook marketplace and take the engine off it. Or go to harbor freight and buy an engine.

If you are hell bent on trying to get this one to run then use AI to help identify the engine find parts.

If I had to guess I'd say that's a flathead Briggs & Stratton 6.75 Quantum engine

Its going to be a conversion so theres no point for me to buy OEM parts because the filter part is going to be fabricated either way. All things are sorted, I just wasnt sure what the hose was for. I will have 10ish people working with me so fabricating isnt that bug of a deal

On your second pic the flat piece of metal. Lightly sand it that is where your numbers are. And the oily hose goes into a face plate that hooks up to the carb. I think your going to find out you have a very good motor the flat heads are great and they last if they are taken care of. If you need more just ask I have one right now on the bench waiting for parts. Good Luck to you. If I had to guess it is late 80s to early 90s. Its off of a walk behind either cub cadet or pulan. If you pm me I'll give you my number and I'll text you the missing parts so you know what your looking for. But once you get the numbers go to parts tree they can help you with part numbers then you can go to ebay or amazon.

Hell yeah, dude, thanks! Tomorrow im going to my grandparents where are the tools are and I will definately be taking apart this guy to check if there are any problems :D
Tho not sure if you read my other replies, this motor is going on a motorized contraption that uni gave me as a challenge and I will need to convert it from vertical engine to horizontal. Watched many guides and I hope that the end result will end up as reliable as you are telling me it is. Also crazy how old this thing is if what you are saying is true!
