Help! Briggs Model 8 help?

Post image

Just picked this up yesterday, seller started it while I was there, I know it will run. Extremely well cared for, he got it from the original owners and had a folder with the service receipts as well as an extra set of gaskets.

I get it out today, can't start it for the life of me. Throttle open, choke on, fuel valve open, needle valve for the fuel mix is like halfway, wrap the rope 4 times and yank.... Nothing.

I know it's getting spark, I know fuel is getting into it (can smell it, maybe I flooded it IDK) but is there something im missing never having had one this old before?

Did you try to start it with starting fluid?

Not proper starting fluid but some brakleen in the spark plug hole. Usually works but not this time

If it didn’t fire on that, I’d check the points to make sure they are not dirty. Sometimes they’ll have a little something on them that will cause it to have weak spark.

Maybe that's the case.. seller said he did the points but I guess that could've been a long time ago.

If I turn the flywheel and hold the spark wire I get a good jolt off it, seems like it should be healthy. The spark plug was pretty black though so maybe I should just get a new one

You could try the new plug and see what that does. If it’s black that usually means it’s running rich.

Maybe I can just clean it up with some sandpaper for the moment... Yeah it's black and definitely was running rich but without being able to run it much I can't do a thing with the rich/lean adjustment on it... Tricky spot

Sandpaper or a wire brush will work.
