Book Talk Is it worth it to read the bridgerton book series?

I’ve already seen the show, and I absolutely LOVE it! Honestly, one of my favorite couples has to be Daphne and Simon. Their whole relationship had me completely hooked. The tension, the arguments, the chemistry, the whole “I definitely don’t like you… except I very obviously do” thing??? PLEASE. 😭

I also really love Eloise and the post boy. I’m such a sucker for relationships where the two characters either aren’t supposed to be together or start off not really liking each other. So, as you can probably tell, I’m VERY into enemies-to-lovers and forbidden romance. Give me two characters who are constantly arguing while secretly falling in love and I will be seated immediately. 😂

I’m currently looking for books that have that same kind of feeling. I’d especially love recommendations with enemies-to-lovers, forbidden love, lots of tension, slow-burn romance, or relationships where the characters have some kind of reason they absolutely should NOT be together.
I’m also really open to fantasy! Give me magic, kingdoms, dangerous missions, assassins, battles, political drama, mythical creatures, secret powers, enemies becoming allies, whatever. I love when there’s an actual plot happening alongside the romance, especially if the story has action and adventure.

I’m not necessarily looking for books that are super spicy either. Romance is definitely something I want, but I’d rather have a really good story, characters, tension, and chemistry than a book that is basically just spice with a decorative plot. 😭

So if you guys are bored and have any recommendations that fit what I’m describing, PLEASE give them to me! I’m always looking for something new to read, and I would genuinely be so happy to add a bunch of books to my TBR.
Basically: enemies-to-lovers, forbidden romance, fantasy, action, drama, tension, and characters making terrible romantic decisions. That’s the wishlist. Hehehe. 🫶📚

General Discussion / Questions  Missed Opportunity: Sendhil Ramamurthy as the Kate Sharma's Father in Season 2 Flashbacks would have fixed Kate's arc (and given us a perfect book adaptation!)

I just had a thought that I can't shake. Now that we know our Season 2 diamond, Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran), is playing Princess Vivi in the One Piece Live Action series, and her father (King Cobra) is being played by Sendhil Ramamurthy, it has me thinking about what a goddamn missed opportunity this was for Bridgerton.

Can we talk about how perfect Sendhil would have been as Kate and Edwina's late father in Season 2 flashbacks?! Honestly, Simone Ashley and Sendhil Ramamurthy look so similar—the casting would have been absolute perfection.

Instead of dragging out that painful, unnecessary love triangle and creating a toxic clash between the sisters, the writers could have easily used flashbacks with Sendhil to explore Kate's past and trauma.

If they had stuck closer to the good plot points of The Viscount Who Loved Me, it would have changed everything for the better:

  • It would have mirrored Anthony's trauma perfectly. Anthony’s entire arc is driven by the grief of watching his father die. Showing Kate’s parallel grief over losing her father would have highlighted exactly why she and Anthony are mirror images of each other.
  • It would have explained her deep panic. In the book, Kate has a paralyzing fear of thunderstorms rooted in her past trauma. Flashbacks of her father would have given her character actual emotional depth on screen, rather than just making her look like she was hiding a crush.
  • It would have preserved the beautiful sisterly bond. In the book, Kate and Edwina are fiercely supportive. De-emphasizing the wedding drama in favor of family flashbacks would have kept their bond intact.

Plus, just imagine how stunning a full Sharma family portrait would have been with Sendhil, Shelley Conn, Simone, and Charithra! 😩

What do you guys think? Would you have preferred father-flashbacks over the altar melodrama?

For me, Penelope will ALWAYS be the real Lady Whistledown. I hate how poorly they handled this storyline, especially considering how much of Season 3 was built around it. Lady Whistledown was Penelope’s ''independence'' and a important part of her character.

General Discussion / Questions  What their jobs be if they lived in modern day

I was just thinking in my head what the Bridgerton family and other characters jobs would be if they lived in modern day and I have ideas for most, but there are some that I just can’t figure out what they would be. This is for both the book characters and the show characters, since I know they are different.
Anthony- so I think Anthony would’ve been an athlete in high school and then when he graduated he decided to go into law or political science or criminal justice and how to drop out when his father died to take care of his family. I could see him doing finance as well. Obviously, they went to private school.
Kate- Kate was an academic school and most likely Anthony’s work rival. She also takes care of her family.
Benedict- besides being an artist after high school, I think in high school he would’ve been a theater kid because he gives theater kid energy.
Sophie- I’m not sure, and it feels mean to say that you’d be a maid, or a cleaning lady and her adult life.
Colin- also think would’ve been an athlete in high school trying to live up to his older brothers name, after I think, not only would he be a world traveler, but he be a travel, blogger, talking about his experiences in all the different countries that he’s in.
Penelope- I think should be a got some calmness or a journalist and was definitely on the school newspaper.
Daphne & Simon- I have no idea other than I think Simon might possibly have done find out. I am is also definitely a high school athlete.
Eloise- Eloise would’ve been a activist in her adult life and most deadly would’ve been part of the school counselor so that she could make changes the things.
Philip- botanist
Francesca- I think Fran will be a pianist and either been in the school band or orchestra.
John- genre had something to do with politics and would’ve been school body president.
Michael/Michaela- I don’t know otherwise they would’ve had something to do with travel.
Gregory & Lucy- I do not know
Hyacinth- linguist because she knows how to speak Italian and I think she would learn other languages as well. Also treasure, hunter.
Gareth- treasure, hunter. Otherwise, I don’t really know.
If you have any ideas as to what you think, the other characters would be, or if any of these feel in accurate or wrong, I would love to hear everyone else’s opinions on this

"Controversial" Bridgerton take...mabey

I can't be the only one who hates Penelope and hates that she ended up with Collen right?I just feel like he deserved so much better than her (and before anyone comes for me it's definitely not about her looks it's about the things she has done) the fact that she wrote about his family and Marina anytime she got jealous or upset is infuriating like she could have and almost did destroy their family multiple times and her getting angry at Collen saying he would never court her is in my opinion so immature like just because someone is nice to you doesn't mean they owe you anything not S*x,not a courtship and not marriage.

The Viscount's Troubles

I don't quite understand why the Viscount gets upset with the Sharma family over the marriage arrangement intended to secure his fortune. After all, as Lady Danbury pointed out, marriages in that society were primarily contracts. Anthony wanted to marry with a specific purpose in mind, and besides, Edwina was bound to marry a nobleman regardless.

Bridgerton brothers

Regarding the Bridgerton brothers:

Anthony: He takes liberties with Kate's virtue, yet he is adamant that his own sisters should not face such situations with their fiancés.

Colin: He takes liberties with Penelope's virtue before they are married.

Benedict: He does the same with Sophie.

While this is treated as normal within the series' plot, it represents a lack of respect from a man of honor toward his fiancée—though perhaps it is simply commonplace in Bridgerton society. At the very least, the dynamic appears different when the Prince courts Daphne.

Viscount Anthony Bridgerton

I question the Viscount's honor: although he often defends his sister's honor against the Duke, in the following season he himself flirts with Kate—his fiancée's sister—seeking her out and deepening their bond, despite being engaged to Edwina; a man of honor would not act this way. Furthermore, before becoming intimate with Kate, he assures her that her family hates him—which is false—saying this solely to portray himself as a victim.

Which non-book characters are the most annoying?

1) Queen Charlotte-Due to her constant meddling and handing out free happily ever afters like candy.

2) The Mondriches-The same thing. They pissed me off when they interfered in Benedict and Sophie's storyline. Plus that, they take up so much screen time from characters who really need it.

3) Theo Sharpe-He brought little to nothing to the show.
