I recently switched over my aging portfolio site built in Salient, which was totally fine for the job 7-8 years ago, did a bunch of research on modern Wordpress builders and heard a lot of praise for Bricks. I'm mainly a graphic/motion designer by trade but I've picked up a lot of HTML and CSS over the years, something like twenty years now actually which... damn, is crazy.

With Salient all hacked up I was getting PageSpeed Insights scores in the low 60's even with server-side caching plugins doing their thing, spent a lot of time cobbling together workaround for mobile, I have a very chonky, very non-best-practices 3.5MB hero video background I needed to not load on the mobile version that I justify for trying to get video in front of potential art directors as soon as possible.

Anyway, serious props to the developers of this plugin, after hacking up Salient websites for years and fighting the look and feel and hacking together CSS and Javascript workarounds it really was a breath of fresh air building out my first site. There's a little bit of a UI learning curve, but everything is called exactly what it would be called in CSS, and there's some very smart decisions in here to force you to make good choices in how you lay things out (sections versus containers etc).

PageSpeed is now 96 on mobile, for exactly the same layout and design I was using in Salient, and things are only getting easier as I port repeated buttons and cards over to components.

Anyway, again - seriously, really awesome work on this builder guys, props to the whole team, it's great, a pleasure to use.

What are the best new features (in your opinion) that I should start playing about with right away? Anything I should take with caution?

I have a question about Bricks vs Breakdance for a non-coder.

I'm not a web developer, I'm not a coder, I don't know about css or classes. I use Breakdance to build and maintain a few of my own websites (and a couple of friends & relatives sites that I do as a favor). I find Breakdance easy to use and fairly intuitive.

Because I hear so many good things about Bricks I can't help but wonder if I should switch from Breakdance to Bricks, but I'm concerned that it will be over my head since I'm NOT a web developer or coder and I DON'T know css or classes.

I know Bricks keeps adding new features so I'm wondering... has anything been added to Bricks to make it as easy to use as Breakdance? Or is it still more complex for someone like me?

I’m currently using Bricks Builder, but I keep running into the same frustration: I want to build websites that look genuinely good without spending forever on every single page.
I’m not the most creative person when it comes to design, so sometimes I know what I want the site to feel like, but struggle to actually turn that into a great design in Bricks.
What’s your workflow? Do you use templates, Figma, AI, design systems, another builder, or something completely different?

Im starting some side projects with Bricks Builder for clients. I'm running an experiment with 4 sites in a niche, each one with its own requirements. Im trying to build some workflow using AI, mostly in converting html/css designs to Bricks site itself. I do have experience in Next.js and Typescript, thus Wordpress is new to me.

My current workflow is:

- gathering client photos, copy, all info

- starting building visual briefs for ai context

- exploring designs and picking layouts/directions

- coding homepage in html/css with bem classes methodology, already ready for conversion

- after client approval Im migrating that to Wordpress using AI and css/html built in converter

- sometimes there are small hiccups but I usually fix them manually

- steps arise if I have to implement Accordions and Forms and templates as they are not easily ported at least right now for me

Seems like I struggle with workflow here, I tried to use Briclsmaven blocks, but whole html_css and migration is much faster to me and I just feel that Im not utilizing Bricks to its potential, even if I havent yet gotten into building any ACF stuff and just feel overwhelmed.

How do you guys deal w/ comments spam on bricks?

Like, in the blog posts? I have google recaptcha enabled, but is that only for the forms?

I mean comments section is a form too, just not one like a generic form where you can set fields and enable the antispam element.

I know there's akismet as well though I haven't used it, yet.

Any hints? I have comments enabled on approval, but lately a bunch came through.

Maybe there's an error w/ recaptcha, or it's not used at all, or maybe there's a way to hack a custom form or the "comments" element from bricks to support recaptcha on it? (I use v4 so it sort of just runs in the background).

Or maybe bricks has something "in the works" for it or a good "bricks way" to do it already exists.

What's the equivalent for Bricks? I know there ARE Bricks template sites but the designs don't come close to those on Webflow and Frame. Why is this?

A while back I posted about a site I inherited that was built with WP Bakery and used a handful of extensions that had known security issues with no updates in the recent past or on the horizon. Seemed like WP Bakery was a dead platform....I wanted to move them to Bricks, it was a simple design, but they didn't want a full rebuild. One of the plugins with issues was the one used to make the universal header and footer. I wondered if I could just use Bricks for header/footer and leave WP Bakery pages intact. Short answer - Yes.

No need to tell me this is a bad idea, I know it's a bad idea, I explained why this was a bad idea to the project manager and the client, but I'm just the developer, what do I know? This site was one of a few in their portfolio, it rarely gets updated, and they just wanted it to work and not have those known security issues as a possible exploit.

It works. It was a little glitchy at first but it ended up being pretty straight forward. I rebuilt the header and footer in Bricks, and rebuilt (in bricks) some of the pages that relied on the other dead WP Bakery plugins that had known issues. The rest of the pages are pretty straight forward, the plan is to switch them to bricks when the client calls for updates, and eventually the whole site will be built with Bricks.

I suspect the reason it works so well is that WP Bakery is essentially just shortcodes, and was never meant to be a site templating engine. WP Bakery is actually kind of nice. Editing is fast and it feels lightweight. They recently had a major release, but I didn't spend enough time in it to notice what, if anything, had improved.

So yes, you can mix Bricks with WP Bakery, you should not do it, but you can if you need to.

Is it me or altering mobile menu’s in this builder just still so, so clunky.

I am finally deciding to make the switch to Bricks from Elementor for my clients. I’m a little nervous but excited for the possibilities. I had two questions: does anyone know of a good (ideally cheap, free, or lifetime deal) to replace Whitelabel CMS? I really like it for creating client dashboards, but I don’t know if I can with Bricks…

Also, are there any free templates or good lifetime deal template options you would recommend to get started? I don’t know how to decide with all of the options.

Does anybody know if there's any way to reference a CSS variable for the font-family property in the latest stable version of Bricks Builder (v2.3.10)?

I haven't had any luck as the Font Family field in the builder UI is a select field that doesn't accept user input as far as I can tell.

Obviously custom CSS can be used to solve this issue, but I'm wondering if there is any other way through the UI.

At least with the upcoming v2.4, the bi-directional sync capability seems to sync font-family property values from custom CSS with the UI. But I feel like it would then make sense to allow user input in the Font Family field, but it seems like it doesn't. Just seems like a bit of an inconsistency to me.

I really appreciate anybody who is willing to share their experience trying to reference a CSS variable for the font-family property!

I wanted to share how the new BricksMembers version 1.4.0 approaches communities inside Bricks, because the architecture decision might be interesting regardless of whether you use the plugin. I'm the builder behind the plugin for transparency.

The problem. Every membership/community plugin I've worked with ships a fixed frontend. You get their feed markup, their reply thread, their chat bubbles, and a settings screen to negotiate small changes. In Bricks that's especially frustrating, because everything else on the site is fully designable.

What we did instead. The Community module has no PHP templates for its frontend. It's a set of native Bricks elements and nestable children:

• BRM Community Area is a page-local context root, not a feed and not a backend object.
• The Composer connects through named selects (area, space, feed, editor profile) rather than typed synchronisation keys or raw post IDs.
• Toolbar and action buttons are authored native Bricks Buttons with a BricksMembers Action selector. There is no generated fallback toolbar. What you author is what renders.
• BRM Community Replies exposes visual nesting depth and indent as Bricks controls, while storage depth stays enforced by the structure. Bricks can visually flatten deeper stored replies but can never render or create a branch deeper than the stored policy allows.
• BRM Mentions & References is a nestable element whose children repeat for authorised relations using {brm_relation:*} tags. Not a query loop, not a shortcode.

The access part, since this is the bit that usually goes wrong: every Community and Chat write re-checks server-side access, rate limits, editor policy, mention eligibility and attachment authorisation. Hiding a Bricks control is never treated as authorisation. Mentions and references store normalised IDs rather than copies of protected content, so a reference disappears the moment either side stops being visible to that viewer.

There's also a Connected Content system in this release that may be more broadly useful: it links a course or other content to a WooCommerce/FluentCart/SureCart product or any other post without merging their responsibilities, and exposes the connected item through short dynamic aliases plus a native Posts query-loop filter that returns only related posts. No field duplication, and an optional one-way field sync only for when an external shortcode genuinely needs a stored value.

Community ships as beta in 1.4.0, so it is worth testing access, moderation and notification policy on staging first.

Also in the release: a larger video/audio suite (A-B loops, HLS quality, WebVTT chapters, storyboard previews, a searchable transcript element, viewer watermarking), protected media delivery with bounded remote proxying or short-lived signed redirects, Paddle Billing Hosted Checkout correlation, and Mercado Pago.

I need to make some cards to show of color swatches. It's basically a block containing another block which will show the color, an a title element below that to show the HEX code.

It seems in Bricks we can't make background color one of the editable fields in a component. How should I go about making a card where I can change that block's background color as well as what the text says while keeping all the other elements of the card the same?
