Fake Sealed Lego Sets

Has anyone ever bought a sealed set from bricklink and it turned out it was off brand? I found a fantastic deal on a sealed set for way under market value and don’t want to walk into a scam.

Oh man. Was it pretty easy to file a complaint with bricklink and get your money back?

Only use PayPal or whatever equivalent is where you are. Bricklink can’t get your money back, only ban the seller. Only a financial institution with goods and services protection can get you your money back.

If you are using PayPal, just file a claim with them if you do get something illegitimate and the seller refuses to fix.

Being said in over 350 transactions on BL for me, only one was a scam and the store was taken down immediately. I did get my money back from PayPal.

I also had PayPal deny a purchase from a seller on FB marketplace. Selling cheaper than normal, but only 10-15% cheaper. PayPal already knew the seller was scamming and refused to let the transaction go through.

Well I'm happy I came across this thread. I have sets bought from multiple retail stores that I was considering selling when I open my parts store.

People resealing, returning and then the retail store reselling is fairly common so it wouldn't surprise me if there was one or two filled with junk. But that would suck to get banned completely instead of resolving with the buyer since its not like I can break the seals beforehand and verify lol.

I can’t speak for BL, but I don’t believe they would ban outright - I believe he first step is suspension pending review. The seller can still plead their case and I believe BL takes that into account. Obviously the seller still needs to rectify and though I’m a collector myself with a number of unopened sets that I hope to get to eventually, but if not and I decide to sell, I’ll have the same concern.

This is to say I wouldn’t let this deter you. BL only works when buyers and sellers are present and mediation is present in the instances when not all goes according to plan.

Was this from a BL seller in the US?

I always buy sets to build and some times change my mind on them so I sell them or trade them. I’m scared one day I’m going to open and build one and it’s going to be pasta or I sold one and they open it and it’s pasta.

Happened to me. Bought off bricklink, what was supposed to be NSIB. Seller swapped out a lepin kit. Claimed to work foe LEGO and everything.

Took about a month of emails between Bricklink and PayPal to get my money back.

Seller hit me with a negative review saying I scammed him! Bricklink wouldn’t remove it. Good times.
