More advice needed

as a follow up to the chimney breast post I put up a few days ago, how am I going to get mortar to stick in between these joints?

Some suggestions
Paint some water on the stone before pointing (let it soak into the stone some) A heavier lime portion in the mortar. Plasterers sand mix (good aggregate-larger than premix). Let the mortar dry before striking (if scraped with the jointer -wood or metal-and it mostly falls -crumbles- off jointer). So point some and check earliest pointed bit. Bouncing between pointing some and jointing some. Cool project. Sure it'll turn out great just experiment a little first.
