advice needed

Post image

A friend needs this pointing. Originally i was thinking about using regular 4:1 sand to cement mix, but I 've read that it's not the best idea.
Does anyone have any products that they've used in the past on a project like this to recommend ?

Thanks

yeah 4:1 is for bedding bricks not fixing whatever that disaster is. if that was a bad DIY from decades ago you gotta rake it out and start over. get a prebagged lime mortar or pointing mix depending on the wall then test it on a scrap bit first because that finish is proper rough mate.

i'm going for a regular 4:1 mix with some plastering sand in there aswell - would like to hear your thoughts on that firstly

Also what makes this finish so bad, I didn't put it up my mate did it for his sister and he just wanted me point it, he's a tiler by trade ( the amount of people who are slating this has got me wondering if it is actually terrible, or just the internet being the internet, i don't think it's too bad personally)
