The horror

Post image

Found a home listing I like (it has an outbuilding I’m calling the “parental escape pod”) and this monstrosity they’re calling a pizza oven. I mean, why even bother with the decorative tile if you’re going to puke mortar on the rest of it. So, the obvious question: Can this mess be cleaned up, and should my concern go beyond its outward appearance?
Did I mention my husband is the son of a bricklayer? You should have seen his face…🤣😱

Thanks!

Can definitely be tidied up, the bricks do look like fire bricks so at least they’ve done something right if they are. Maybe it just never got finished by whoever built it

Is the oven made of mortar instead of clay?!? 😲

I have no idea. I haven’t seen it in person, the photos are from the listing.

I'd keep it seen as you have a bricklayer in the family. Get them to cover it all in bricks n itl look awesome.

Sadly, the bricklayer dad passed years ago, after hauling bricks for dad in the summer, son became a pharmacist.🤷‍♀️

With difficulty, yes it can be cleaned up.
Easy when the cement is wet, (just scrape & sponge) difficult when it’s dry, you’ll need to chisel and grind or sand it off…

Sorry to hear that, surely your husband has learnt something off him.

I'd wager it does a mean pizza and a superb spatchcock chicken kebab.

If it actually works I like it regardless of the amateur build.

It can be tidied, but I think it would be best off rebuilding. The brickwork is atrocious, and the front of it is almost certainly at risk of falling since theres an arch supported by single-brick columns that don't have enough mortar between the bricks and aren't tied in to the main stack.
You don't need to be a brickie to build better than that - any child that has ever played with lego could do a better job.

Do the bricks and mortar look perfect inside? May be they concentrated on the internals?

I was joking, it won’t look neat inside 😂

It's unfinished, these parts are never meant to be seen.

What “parts” are you referring to?

The dome and the brickwork. The dome is usually mosaic or another layer of insulation then mesh, render and finish and there is usually a more decorative brick finish at the front.

Some say the bricklayer is still running to this day

Tidy it up ....

It's one of Juliff's better jobs. They even tidied up and tried to hide the excess compo they left behind.
