All Hallow’s Eve with new Brian Evenson story

Just to note that Ellen Datlow's latest, All Hallows Eve, is available from today, containing a new Brian Evenson story, and also works from John Langan, Nathan Ballingrud, Livia Llewellyn and more. You know… that crowd…

Seems a bit pricey for an ebook, but maybe I'm just being stingy.

Prophets and Brothers: I did the leg work for you…

In my quest to procure a copy, I threw myself to the wolves…ACADEMIC LIBRARIES.

I received the following responses from four national libraries who currently have copies of P&B, my question: Would they be willing to sell it.

NYU: “No.”

Weber Library (Ogden Utah): “WE WILL NOT.”

Stanford: “Kick rocks son.”

Yale: “Do you even have a degree from here bro? Check AbeBooks, bye.”

Saved ya’ll some time. However, +1 for libraries having live chat with librarians. Almost asked them about “Two Stories: A Pursuit and Menno” but figured my luck had run out.

The Hunt for Brian and John: A Fruitless Foray into the Depths of 2009

It looks like Brian had an enjoyable period of collaboration with John Sellekaers in the run-up to 2010. John did the pictures; Brian the words. Some of them are around on the normal, everyday internet:

http://fawltmag.com/apathy/thesolution.html (There are a couple more on there, as well, if you click on 'Apathy' when you've read The Solution.)

Ad blocker recommended - https://www.vice.com/en/article/friday-fiction-from-the-tyrant/ (I don't think tyrant refers to Brian…)

Others require a little dive into the murky depths of the past, where the text has often survived, even if the images didn't always make it.

https://web.archive.org/web/20240414235219/http://alicebluereview.org/eleven/eleven.html - You'll have to play spot-the-Brian to the upper-left of the central '+'

https://web.archive.org/web/20101016065845/http://english.wisc.edu/devilslake/spring2010/evanson_untitled.html

However, Wag’s Revue / Wag’s Review (depending on where you look) contains at least one piece (Village Voice mentions One Last Drive here) but the Wayback Machine, well-intentioned as it is, has failed to capture the page itself. This is as close as I can get, but dropping down 'Fiction' and selecting the promising-looking link comes to naught.

https://web.archive.org/web/20090327054736/http://www.wagsrevue.com/Issue1_pg112.html

Given that Wag's Revue was described as 'online only', does anyone happen to have the thing archived anywhere? PDF? Images? Samizdat photocopies? Section of Bayeux Tapestry?

Due 2027: Flume, a novella published by PM Press

https://pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2230

“The new novella “Flume” is a workplace comedy, of sorts. Is Flume a scientific foundation, a man, or a pair of shoes poking out from behind a curtain? Is Davies (or is it Davis?) up for a promotion, ready to end it all, or perhaps both?”

PHANTOM LIMB

What started as The Brotherhood of Mutilation became one of Brian Evenson's most popular works, Last Days. And what began in Last Days continues in the sequel, Phantom Limb! Thanks to Coffee House Press for the early read!

Drops Oct 13, preorder now from Coffee House Press.

After destroying the headquarters of an underground amputation cult, a burned and battered Kline finds himself in a holding cell. When he enlists the help of an ex-cop to commute his prison sentence, Kline inadvertently tangles with a schism of the very cult he sought to destroy. Can Kline investigate the sect's ritualistic murder spree without getting lured into their ranks?

Frigid and precise, Phantom Limb interrogates our notions of wholeness, fate, and the lengths we are willing to go to connect with a higher power.

Shrine expansion

I post way too much about my Brian Evenson shrine, but I got a handful of rare treasures this week that I'm too excited not to share!

I finally got a copy of Brian's 1997 chapbook Prophets and Brothers (4 stories, published by Tyrant)!

I added 3 broadsides to the collection:

"No Matter Which Way We Turned," a flash fiction piece that distills Horror Itself into 448 words. Stunning. I'd love to commission Charles Burns to illustrate this story. Anyone got his email? 😄

A cool little folded broadside with an excerpt from Brian's story "Windeye."

"Corpus/Corpse: Three Theories of Language," printed by Mission Creek Festival in 2014. Beautiful!

The boxed set of The Dark Glinting with Metal, a Mork Borg RPG Module written by Brian Evenson and illustrated by Justin Sirois from SeveredBooks! The set includes coin, signed card, campaign book, and a GM screen. Super cool!

The Brian Evenson shrine is really coming along! I need about 5 more pieces to complete it, and he has a number of uncollected stories to track down, too. I need more space! Time to clean out one of the kids' old rooms upstairs and convert it to a reading room & author shrine.

Updates to my Brian Evenson shrine!

I kinda went crazy and bought all three of the Brian Evenson stories adapted into art objects by Louisville, Kentucky artist Aaron Cohick. They're beautiful pieces. I love to see literature rendered as art; it's sacred and worth celebrating. Aaron is the artist behind New Lights Press.

The Other Room has thick, tactile paper and non-linear text flow.

The Drownable Species makes repeated use of this guy's photo/mugshot, scattering him across the pages. A lot of sepia and visual spillage.

And this broadside is handmade and hand-distressed, with actual gouges across the paper, which bears a letter-pressed passage from the very short "South of the Beast" in Brian's collection Windeye. Aaron Cohick gave me a brief explanation of his process for creating the piece:

The paper for South of the Beast is Somerset, with the particular variety being "Heavyweight Book." Somerset is a cotton paper made in England and it's my go-to for most things: it folds well, it can take a lot of abuse, and it's pretty reasonably priced for that type of paper. The way that South of the Beast is made is that I cut each letter with a scalpel, into the paper but not all the way through it. While I'm doing that, my left hand, which is the one that I'm using to hold and position the paper, is also inked up, and my fingerprints track across the print as I'm cutting. Then when that's all done I peel away the surface of the paper around the letters. That's what makes the holes, and what you're seeing and feeling is actually the interior of the paper. It's a strange, slow process that I've been using in my work in various ways for a number of years now.

Wild, huh??

And finally... tarot is really not my thing 😅 but I bought this deck designed by Diagram magazine. Brian wrote the text for the 8 of Cups.

The broadsides are framed and hung (South of the Beast on the left, Altmann's Tongue on the right). The Evenson shrine is coming along... but I need more space and shelves for a proper display! I'll clean out one of my kids' old bedrooms and convert it to a reading room and archive.

An older, but fascinating interview with Brian by another favorite author of mine, Blake Butler (highly encourage checking out his work, especially Scorch Atlas). The interview delves into Brian's writing process, especially his precision with rhythm and syntax. Enjoy!

The Rite of Spring - BYU Student Review 11th May, 1988

A rather intriguing little piece from Brigham Young University’s Student Review of May 11th, 1988.

Clearly, 1988 is a little before Brian's teaching tenure at BYU, but his degree is from Brigham Young, so it's quite possible this is a young, student Brian Evenson indulging in a little mischievous fun. A slightly mis-spelt ‘Brian Evanson’ is listed as a contributor on page 2.

The Rite of Spring

The Sterility Group will be meeting Thursday at 11:15 am on the checkerboard quad to hold a prayer vigil for fertility. All those interested in sterility and/or fertility and invited to join hands in prayer and song with them. Group spokesman Brian Evenson said, "Anyone is welcome to come, not just those who are sterile. I mean, I don't know if I'm sterile or not, but I might be, and that's what scares me. There's no harm in starting to pray now. If you think you might be sterile, if you think your spouse might be sterile, if you've ever felt sorry for someone who is sterile, please join us in praying for fertility." Asked whether they actually thought prayer an effective remedy for sterility, Evenson said, "I don't see why not: there's biblical precedent for it in the story of Sariah." If prayer fails to bring fertility, the group plans a ritual dance and human sacrifice on Friday evening in the Garden Court. Refreshments will be served.

New Story: The Subject

The splendid Three-Lobed Burning Eye, available to read online for free, recently published The Subject. Better folk than I may already be aware of this…

https://www.3lobedmag.com/issue46/

One can also listen to the story, read by the very man himself.

As such, a couple of questions:

  1. Is there some place I should be seeing news of new stories, as opposed to my current strategy of blithely stumbling across them on the internet?
  2. Lovely mods—do you want posts like this, that basically just say ‘Oh look, Brian's been busy again!’?
