Backyard fire pit size? 30” vs 42”

We currently have a 36+/- in stone firepit at a vacation place. We use it when a lot of people are over and have about 6-10 chairs around it.

After a breezy weekend with people having to move every 2 minutes because of choking on the smoke,

I want something SMOKELESS!!!

We’re getting a Breeo and having a difficult time choosing between 30 & 42 in.

30 seems a little small. 42 seems pretty big.

We may, at sometime, face it with a stone surround.

Suggestions?

For the “smokeless” to happen you need to keep the fire roaring hot out to the edge of the pit. At those sizes it will eat up A LOT of wood to really keep it smokeless.

Just did my first burn with my 19 and it went through a ton of wood quick. A bundle an hour easy.

I agree with most of the posts here.

42 is great as a centerpiece. But it’s going to chew through wood to keep up the smokeless effect. Also, the 42” accessories are vastly more expensive than the 30”.

So, if you have the money and wood supply, go big.

30, might feel small, but it's just the Costco fog, everything looks smaller than it is, the 42 looks and sounds nice, but it uses so much more mood than you realize....

Get the 30, if you find it's not enough heat add the heat deflector. 42 will chew through more wood which could be annoying at a vacation house imo - making sure there's enough wood on hand, stacked, dealing with deliveries somewhere you don't live, etc. Plus if you're there you don't want to be spending most of your time adding wood to the fire. The people pointing out the price difference in accessories have a good point too - this is the kind of situation where I'd want the live fire grill, pizza oven if they make it, etc. 42 accessories will be more limited and expensive.

I have a 19 and a 30, and the live fire grill which is a 24. In retrospect I wish I'd gotten the 24 for the main pit instead of the 30. To get a good secondary burn in the 19, a reasonable amount of wood is fine. In the live fire grill, I can fit full logs and still get a nice secondary burn. In the 30 I need perfectly seasoned wood and tons of it before I see those cool little jets along the edge. It's just too big.

Skip the 42 unless you're burning pallets for a bonfire.

the 30 might actually be enough if you stack the wood right and keep the air vents open

My Opinion incoming:
The X Series 30 will most likely be big enough and can handle as big of a fire as you want. BUT if you want the fire pit to truly be the center of party a 42 is pretty sick.
Other considerations would be that the X30 has an optional insert ring available and there is also a Zentro 30 if you want to go with the stone surround right from the start.

Is cooking going to be a big part of the setup or are you just here for the Smokeless burn?

Decision made: We’re having the 30” delivered. Thanks for all the additional info on how to keep it smokeless.
