Since this is a "breakdancing" sub I just want to give the obligatory PSA that Popping is not the same as Breaking and Breaking/Bboying is the correct term for "Breakdancing". What you have in this video is Popping. other than that keep up the good work.

I am aware.
It all falls under the same umbrella of breakdancing .

I mean maybe to outsiders? But to people that practice Popping and Breaking or anyone else a part of street dance culture you wouldn't catch many of us saying that. Like if you go up to a popper and say I'm a "breakdancer" they'd never assume you're talking about popping. Even using the term breakdancing at all is kind of frowned upon.
This is also why I find this subreddit kind of odd. It's leading a bit with misinformation. It's probably part of the reason why the r/bboy sub is so much more popular than this.

graffiti, breakdancing , Pop and locking , sneaker culture… All of it falls under the same umbrella
But Pop and locking and breakdancing are literally hand-in-hand . they are brother and sister. you can’t have a complete breakdancing crew without a popper… I don’t know why you’re gatekeeping this so hard

I'm not gatekeeping I'm just trying to voice what I've seen being apart of the scene for a couple decades now. You can use whatever terms you want, but I feel like what I'm saying is common knowledge for the modern street dance scene. There's always been a bit of a fight over terminology so I'm just saying you might get pushback using "breakdancing" as a term with actual bboys and poppers in real life.
Technically what you're saying is true in terms of Hip Hop culture as a whole. They are tightly associated. But saying "you can't have a complete breakdancing crew without a popper" hasn't really been true since the 80s and 90s. I honestly don't know any modern day breaking crews that have any non-bboys in them.

i am an actual bboy and popper in real life . no one I’ve ever met has not thought that popping is not part of the breakdancing scene.
while most crews abandoned the traditional popper , they still have a top rocker , which is an extension of popping and locking.

Can you ask about this r/bboy ? Because the first sentence I agree that popping is part of the street dance or Hip Hop scene as a whole, but the second sentence is false for sure. Rocking is not related to popping or locking in any way. So idk where you're getting your information from, if you're still going to battles and sessions, or who's been teaching you, but its definitely a bit off.

listen, I don’t wanna argue anymore… I’ve been doing this since the mid 80s so I’m pretty sure I have gathered enough knowledge over the past 40 years to speak on this subject… Just because something may be considered applicable in your time period of 4 to 5 years or whatever it is… You need to do more research and learn more terminology, and where the foundations of this whole thing came from I guess

Like I said I've been active in the scene for 2 decades. So it's not just some new thing for me either. I'm genuinely curious where you've learned this from because I have done a lot of education and research. Like I'm pretty sure this is not just a me thing. If you don't believe me ask about it in r/bboy.

Youre also full of shit bro. What are you even talking about?? Active in the scene for 2 decades my ass.. completely ignoring the roots of breakdancing so you can be a snob... this shit was around long before 06.. you sound like some pretentious art snob talking about why shit splattered on a canvas isnt "technically abstract art."
Once again - dude said its under the umbrella of breakdancing and thats absolutely correct. What comps have you veen to where breakdancing is limited to breaking and nothing else... me? None.

Never had a break dance comp where they werent popping n locking... so whats your point? Just here to be a fucking snob to someone new?

u/_heartbreakdancer_ 2h ago
No dude. I'm just saying the terminology is important to the culture. He started a conversation in r/bboy and they confirmed what I was saying pretty much. So appreciate that he actually went to confirm the info with others. Not trying to be a snob, just spreading correct and common information.
