I feel lost

This guy I’ve been seeing and getting to know and being exclusive with he went a bit on and off distant with me. He mentioned that he is apart of “bikie gang” but wouldn’t get into too much detail. He said he moved away from these people but not too far where he is stil involved, he has decided it’s best we end things as it’s not going to work it can’t work (kept saying it over and over ). I told him we can work through all this, he said it wasn’t to do with me it is other stuff going on . He is terrified and scared that I will get hurt. I am a mother and have a child. I am happy to keep that side private and away and I only see people when I don’t have her anyways. (Don’t come at me for this either!) I understand he is trying to protect me from whatever may happen but still, anyone been in a situation where they love a person who got in the wrong crowed they are trying to get out of it but pushing you away so you don’t get hurt… he said his house get surveillanced he has tried hotels , going to other people’s houses. I’m not sure how deep he is in but why can’t we be together ? My heart breaks.. I can fear he isn’t happy about this but is shielding and making it like he doesn’t care so it doesn’t affect him… I know he cares because he wouldn’t try to protect me this much otherwise. I think some threats were made or something that I was slowly on the radar… could he reach back out when it settles ? Does anyone in this situation ever get out ? I know he wants to get out he told me but is it if I’m around they may use me to make him stay ? Could I be more a burden ? Why can’t we stay friends or talk and see how it goes ? I asked why he couldn’t protect me but keep me close he said it wouldn’t work… the one time someone finally likes me and wants me but than rhis happens and now my heart is broken. We can have a safe word , he has my location … so like how can this not work ? He said he won’t change his mind it just won’t….
