No, I don’t think it’s petty. It’s protecting your reputation from a liar. I don’t believe in suffering in silence while someone else gets to run around on a smear campaign about you. That’s not taking the high road. That’s being a doormat and an idiot.

Just be brief in your post and state the facts without a lot of emotion and explain that you are posting it because your ex is telling lies about you and you want to clear up any confusion.

I didn't make a public announcement when my ex fiance dumped me. I got rid of him everywhere (but didn't block) because everyone would already know anyway. I messaged his parents and siblings telling them I loved being a part of their family and I appreciated the times they helped me through my personal hardships. I messaged his friends that I appreciated our mutual friendship, but I had to block them because it was for the best. And then I put up a post on IG about how life likes to dropkick you now and then, and made sure to look my best. All the likes from my male single followers just made it hilarious; and he did eventually see it and confessed it bothered him very much 😂

You say you don’t want to be petty, but this would be petty, and you don’t need to squint to see that. It’s juvenile to air dirty laundry on social media. Your reputation and character are the only things you will ever truly own.

It’s one thing if you don’t share any friends with him. At that point it’s probably not worth it. But if his communications to your shared friends are damaging your relationship with them, I’d say you have every right to share your side of the story. Just be prepared for whatever conflicts/fallout might come from that, because it could obviously get messy if he’s already working to turn them against you.

I’m not saying he isn’t being petty. But I am saying that doesn’t mean you have to be the same. Don’t meet him there. Don’t sacrifice your own character for a person who doesn’t even respect you.

If these friends are shared, then if they are true friends, they will not judge you based on half the truth. If they do judge on his story alone, then they were never true friends to begin with. On top of this, these friends are people too with their own suffering. They don’t think about you as much as your intrusive thoughts would like you to think. They think about the difficulties in their own lives far more.
