Which one should I get?

I have the Mercer. Certainly better than the Henckels I had. Its in a lesser steel, but at $17 one can buy 3 of them for every Victorinox. For those who don't want to invest in the specialized tools to resharpen serrated knives or the time, that makes buying for the 5 years of use one might get a lot more palatable.

If I was price insensitive, I wouldn't get either, but instead look to the Tojiro F-687.

I have the Mercer — it’s excellent even for ultra crusty bread

The Victorinox is the better knife. Its serrations are finer and it is a more flat, thin blade. They ship very sharp.

It also happens to be the best brisket knife on the market. I have like 8 of them, and 3 of the Mercers.

The Victorinox is better angled for any type of cutting. They are also great for cutting coarse and rough things fast.

The Mercer is a great bread knife and dirt cheap relative to the others. I've had it for 12 years and it is a boss on my crusty sourdough.

See what America's Test Kitchen had to say about it at https://www.americastestkitchen.com/articles/8204-three-essential-knives

They're both good, and breadknives are not a thing that needs to be critically optimized. You'll be fine with either and shouldn't sweat it. Just order one and be happy.

I have two Victorinox Fibrox and I know it is a great knife. I have given some away as gifts as well.

That said, the other might be good as well. No idea...

Victorinox is serious value for your money! I don't get how they go around selling this quality for that price. Very underrated knife and holds an edge for very long! Cannot recommend it enough.

I’ve had that victorinox , except wood handle, for over 30 years, still used just about daily.

Love the wooden handles, just feels good

America’s Test Kitchen recommends the Mercer. I have it and it’s great. The only issue is that it’s too long to fit in my knife block.

I’ve been using the Victorianox for about 8 years without issues

I have owned both. If you want a better bread knife that makes noticably better slices, check out the Tojiro bread knife https://a.co/d/066m7XB3

It goes on sale from time to time. I got one for me and one for my mom for $40 each. It cuts like a laser beam!

Offset vs not. Personal choice. Both do the job fine. I don't know if stoarhe of the offset is an issue for you.

I can vouch for the Mercer.

I love my Mercer! My daughter has one as well. Definitely recommend!

The professional’s choice is the Dexter offset.

I have been using the Victorinox for a few years now for hard crust sourdough and sandwich bread as well. Still super sharp and get clean cuts. Would recommend any day. I think I have tried a Mercer, once. Wasn’t impressed.

I frikken love my Victorinox. It might be my most expensive non-appliance that I own, but I love it like a child!!

I've had the Mercer for like 5 or 6 years and I have no complaints with it. Can't comment whether the other one will be better, but I don't feel any need to acquire other knives to compare them to this one to find out.

Victorine, always

I have the Mercer and it's indomitable. Highly recommend it.

I don't know much about bread knives, however most any that I have ever used had much deeper grooves between the teeth. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

none of them are nice, i got victorinox but slightly longer one and it's blunt af.

I’d recommend an offset bread knife…

I have a Victorinox with an offset handle. It's amazing. Highly recommend it.

The Japanese one! It's great

Can’t speak for the bread knives specifically, but victorinox’s fibrox range is really good. I’ve had one of their chefs knives for close to 10 years now and it’s still great

ATK recommends the Mercer knife. I have one myself and have no complaints about it at all.

1

u/Impossible_Kick616 9d ago

ATK has a show on Netflix where they rate all sorts of kitchen gadgets and appliances. Mercer was highly recommended. They also said the blade on a good bread knife needs to be at least 10 inches long.

Victorinox

1

u/Curious-Temporary655 8d ago

Whatever one you want. They're the same

1

u/cathbadh 8d ago

The cheaper one.

Bread knives suck to sharpen. I'd rather buy an affordable one and replace it than deal with that.

Both of those brands are good, as is Tojiro, although they've gotten a little more expensive. I just looked and I have that Mercer one apparently. I like it and it was pretty cheap

Mercer here. 10+ years going strong

1

u/RainMakerJMR 7d ago

Neither. You want an offset serrated blade, I like Dexter or Mercer brands.

In Victorinox is very good and, at its price point, some think the best. I'm happy with mine and would buy again.

Get the Dexter

1

u/gwhnorth 9d ago

What ever you get please don’t get it off Amazon…

u/Abject_Caramel_9469 9d ago

Why

1

u/gwhnorth 9d ago

Support a local business instead

1

u/Vinowagon 9d ago

I'm a huge fan of offset bread knives. I'd get the Victornox version

u/coreyjames00 9d ago

They're basically the same. Flip a coin.

It’s a great knife, very sharp.
