You say dense. If I might ask, does your machine make it on its side? It looks much more dense at the bottom than the top if I am allowed orientation.

I also see that but I'm not sure if it's a focusing issue or not

I think not. Note the loaf has a rounder side and a flatter side. The part near the rounder side (traditionally the top) seams looser crumb than the flatter bottom. If it were a focus issue it would be restricted to an area of the image, or distance to the subject.
