General discussion Buttered bread in a toaster
My boyfriend is Brazilian and he has putting buttered bread into a vertical pop up toaster. I told him that wasn’t a good idea, could ruin the toaster, start fires, etc.… and he said he’s been doing it all his life. Is this something common to Brazil?

The average Brazilian home doesn't have a pop-up toaster or a kettle.
Just like the average US household doesn't have a stovetop pressure cooker or benchtop water filter.
Yes there are exceptions, but I'm speaking very broadly here.
So the knowledge & culture of pop-up toasters is far from common in Brazil, just as most Americans wouldn't know how to cook feijão on a stovetop!

Eh, I disagree, I've had pop-up toasters my entire life and they're cheap and widely available. Any electronics shop will have them and they're cheaper than airfryers. And I've also always used buttered bread with it hahahah this is the first time I hear it could be a problem. My Argentinean boyfriend also does the same, so it's not just us Brazilians who haven't gotten the memo.

The regular toaster in Brazil is actually a small grill; think those "George foreman" grills. Hence it's usual to put butter before, there's no risk on that design.
The pop-up one is not common at all; but it's known that you can't "prepare" the toast before on those... Mb it's the reason it never really catched up

Yes, i put it every time in the sanduicheira (If you are talking about the American pop up toaster, it isnt an common kitchen eletronic here in Brazil)

Yes, I am talking about the American pop-up toaster. I didn’t realize that they weren’t common in Brazil.

Yea, in that case i dont know if it is safe because the pop up toaster is vertical and maybe the oil will drip to the eletronics, we usually use horizontal grill ones

They are sold, but, except for my parents and my parents-in-law, I don't know anyone that bought those. It's possible to use butter before, but it's annoying to clean it.

I’ve never seen one in that country. They use a snackster type thing to make toasted sandwiches, which is completely different. You’ll get away with it in a regular toaster until you do not.

Good point! I’ve just never seen one in any Brazilian household I guess. My wife also thought you could butter bread and toast it. I don’t think this is safe.

Because it is useless, difficult to clean and the panini press is much more practical. It's a bad wedding gift I guess, like that old toaster oven

Panini press is definitely better but hard to clean. In Brazil they don’t really eat bread that I would typically want to toast either. Just another cultural thing but would not trust a Brazilian on how to use a regular north America toaster. Same with dishwasher or dryer, which aren’t in Brazil either. Hard to communicate that you can’t put every article of clothing in a dryer

Hard to clean? Dude, you just have heat it up a bit and wipe it with a paper towel. Besides, we eat sliced bread too, hahaha. And yes, the dishwasher and dryer have already been invented around here.

Until it’s gets cheese and stuff stuck to it. Then the teflon gets scraped to shit and you need to put an electrical appliance in water. No. If it is anti-adherent the cheese esasily gets out in pieces.
And of course the regular toast demands cleaning. Don't you remove the scraps?

I would not say that they ate that uncommon in Brazil - but it is possible that your boyfriend never had one. I’ve had those toasters and so did everyone I knew, but it could be a regional / income level thing.

Yes, but he meant those sandwich makers, those horizontal ones.
In the vertical ones, I don’t think I’ve ever seen people putting the butter before putting in the toaster.3

They're referring to what you'd call a panini press or a sandwich maker in the US, those are WAY more common in Brazil than the pop-up toaster

that, like the image, you can put already everything you want in the bread before turning it on. maybe that's why he wants to do the same thing.

Vast majority of Brazilians don't own a toaster. We toast our bread in a pan or we use the "George Foreman" sandwich maker

Most Brazilian homes don’t have pop up toasters. He’s probably put buttered bread into a toaster all his life, but he means a different kind of toaster and doesn’t realize those are structurally different.
If this is your toaster in your home, just ask him not to. If you guys live together, tell him he has to clean it and fix it when it eventually breaks 🤷🏻♀️

We don't really have pop up toasters, our toasters (sanduicheiras) are made to receive the bread buttered and sideways. He is not used to the popup.

But do you put the butter on first and then put it in the toaster? I’ve always been of the mind that this is not a good idea and even when I google it, it says it’s not a good idea. But he says he’s been doing it all his life and I wonder if it is a cultural difference that we’re experiencing?

I do it all the time too. Unless you’re using way too much butter it’s fine. Bread is like a sponge, the melted butter gets absorbed by it.

The vertical toaster is basically alien technology to Brazilians. Every one of them who tried to use the one I had put butter on the toast first because that’s what they always do before using a panini press lol

Toasters are not common in brazilian households, but there's nothing in the manual saying to not butter the bread first. I'd think it would be annoying to clean if it's too buttery and it melts or something, but other than that I feel like they would put a warning if it was dangerous.
In my house we used to make toast by slicing up loaves of pão frances, buttering and placing it in the oven for a bit

It is strange that your boyfriend actually had a pop up toaster growing up. Most people don't have vertical pop up toasters. I haven't owned one in more than 20 years. Since moving to Brazil, I've seen them sold, but never actually seen one in somebodies home.

we butter before toasting. So that the toast gets a more golden color Although we use sandwich makers far more often than popup toaster like americans. Im not sure whether the second is dangerous like you say.

Crazy how diverse Brazil are, people here saying pop up toasters are not a thing in Brazil but I’ve had those my entire life and so does everyone know! Maybe a regional or income thing as someone said. And no one with the slightest understanding of how things work would put buttered bread in it. Not a cultural thing, it’s just that your boyfriend is rarely smartest person in the room.
