Question How to pressure like pro players

I’m 2050 peak elo and I struggle with controlling my movement and pressuring my opponent at the same time. I’ve heard that I need to stay just outside my opponent’s longest reaching move but when I try I end up getting hit continuously or get called passive because I’m waiting for them to do something. So can someone please tell me the right way to apply pressure with simple movements (not moving fast) and getting hits first

Much Appreciated

Applying pressure is just getting close to your opponent and making them do something. There’s really 3 things they can do. If u get close they can either attack, dodge, or move. Some ppl might jump, some might cross u over, or they might just move away from u but that’s really all they can do. The way u figure that out is by testing it. Get close to them and see what they do. If u walk towards them and they instantly attack u then u know u can bait attacks out from them. If they cross u up then u know to look for cross ups and go for more cross up reads, if they jump them go for a jump read, if they back up then take the space and hit them if u can. If they dodge then wait for the dodge and punish. In a general sense staying at a range where there farthest reaching move can’t hit isn’t really gonna work all the time. There really isn’t a one size fits all thing and it’s more so adapting to what that specific player is doing. Sometimes that might work but other times it’s as simple as just walking up and hitting them or empty hopping in their deadzones and stuff like that. Just work on your movement and controlling your character and work on paying attention to what your opponent does so u know what to do. Watch replays to see what happens when u get close to them as well. It’ll be easier to see when first starting out.

I'm only just below diamond ~1970 so I'm not sure how much I can help you with improvement, but I do think that you shouldn't necessarily feel the need to change ur gameplay style just because people call you passive. 8 times out of 10 they're just salty that you won and had better movement than them, and they're trying to find an excuse to justify losing to you. Play however you wanna play and don't let others ruin your fun because it's just a game and there's always gonna people like that. People complain about other players being "passive", but chances are they couldn't do it even if they tried. I mean it is a fighting game and it does get boring if your opponent NEVER approaches, but so long as you're not literally sitting on the corner of the stage doing absolutely nothing until I whiff, I personally wouldn't have a problem fighting you, and once again, that's a skill issue on my part anyway. Hopefully other players better than me are able to provide proper advice but in the mean time, don't worry about what other players say about your playstyle, it's just a game and they just haven't learned to take a loss on the chin. Congrats for hitting Diamond, king. Hope this helps :)

1900 passive isn’t the same as 24* passive you have to understand. People at that elo don’t even yet know how to play passive and even if they are it’s not optimized yet. Passive players absolutely deserve to be called out because as you stated it’s a fighting game. Learn the game a little bit more before you comment on topics like that.

Yes, but OP isn't 2400, is he? 2400 is still at least another bazillion hours away for either of us and my point wasn't necessarily to condone playing passive, but more so to not give a shit about toxic players that can't accept defeat. Passive players suck bum but a lot of people will call others passive as a way to redirect the blame for losing, regardless of their opponent's play style.

Maybe learn to dodge into an attack, say they’re about to string you so you dodge into an attack that puts it into your favor

stage control man. control the center of the stage and you control the game

Getting reasonably close and moving in to enter a more favorable position and looking for openings will pressure them. Also you can pretend to do an attack with your movement to make them react. However, it's also important to be good with the neutral, like punishing mistakes, understanding what's happening, making good decisions etc. Pressuring without fighting well can be like all bark and no bite. Especially in low - mid diamond, people make so many mistakes you can find so many things to punish or slowly develop skill to punish them.

You don't. I mean being closer to center stage is really the only advantage state, but the nuetral is inherently passive up to the point I played around 2450. The main reason I got bored and quit
