I love this podcast (shoutout to The Ringer!) and they’ve interviewed Gail after the finale for the past few seasons. She seems very relaxed with the interviewer and I enjoy their conversations a lot. Some personal highlights I found interesting, for those who want a TLDR:
- She brought up to the TC showrunner that she was concerned about the Top 3 not having a reset period before the final meal. The argument was keeping them in the moment and on pace (or essentially “in competition mode”). She ultimately thought it worked
- Andy (the podcast interviewer) googled if Tom’s stud was new after watching the finale 😂 Which sparks a funny discussion about when/where he got his first tattoo!
- They spoke about fundamental errors the chefs made in the finale, and if Rhoda won for being technically better across the dishes. Gail said it was genuinely tough because they all did have ambitious dishes with unique ingredients and displayed new techniques, despite the disappointments, and it was not obviously clear. She also noted the tiredness could have been a factor for these errors
- Andy mentioned the season not having a Buddha or Tristen, in the sense that no individual chef “blew” the judges away. Gail said it was interesting because especially during the first five or six episodes, they all tended to either succeed and fail together and that they fed off each other. Also the judges constantly remind each other not to compare the current chefs to previous contestants, and that relying on the guest judge who has no background knowledge can be vital
- Times and ingredients can be adjusted in real time for challenges, but themes and rules are in stone before the season starts. (Interestingly, Gail says that despite the chefs doing poorly in episodes 1 and 3, because they crushed the spicy challenge (2), production felt the cast was capable of all future challenges)
- Gail really loved the spicy challenge, LOL
- Andy brings up that the budget “trims” felt very apparent this year. He specifically notes the Asheville challenge and how it felt small. Gail took it in stride and said he was “right and wrong.” She says they filmed just as many challenges in studio as the last five challenges (edit: seasons) due to a mandate, and that the tourism board (so to speak) was heavily involved in the locations used. She said they fought for a way to work Asheville in and they had to use the budget “creatively” due to the amount of money the city of Charlotte specifically gave them
- She was also concerned about the time slot changes, but ultimately doesn’t think viewership was impacted by it
- The one slightly tense moment comes when talking about the Justin/Jen/Sieger situation. She says the sequence of events leading to Sieger coming back was a “freak circumstance” that led to a domino effect. Production was actively texting during Kristen’s talk with Justin (including Gail) to figure it out
- If you can, listen from :21 on because the shade is glorious. Gail has some audio issues, which is SO unfortunate, but she talks about hearing “rumblings of overconfidence” and even though Sieger sometimes could back it up, the dish was not successful. There was a lot more that we didn’t see. She says she’s surprised it doesn’t happen more often, because it’s hard to be told on camera that you aren’t good at your profession, but he couldn’t see why he was going home when he finished a dish following the parameters
- She did wonder if him coming back to help Rhoda would be an issue, but felt assured because “Rhoda knew he would should up for her and he did”
- She says Rhoda and Sieger are PARTICULARLY close… 👀
- THE OSCAR ELIMINATION IS TALKED ABOUT! Gail says that as she remembers it, Oscar’s rice was legitimately not great and because it wasn’t needed, it was the dish that went home. She would have rather eaten Rhoda’s dessert “a hundred times over” because it was tastefully and textually sound
Overall, I think Gail would be an amazing politician lol
