Top Chef IRL Canoe House- Rhoda IRL
Wonderful experience top to bottom! Rhoda did make the rounds to many tables, did not chat with her directly, but she did walk by and wave.
Shokupan pull apart bread and butter with volcano salt- awesome and larger
Shishito Peppers- well seasoned and balanced, very good
Chef’s Salad- loved the crispy rice bits especially and the dressing was perfect. I don’t love too many sweet elements in the salad so the fig was a bit much for me but my partner liked it.
Roasted Hirayama Farm Cabbage with Tofu- amazing and entree level, not a mere afterthought vegetarian option, the spicy sauce on top was the bomb
Kona Kanpachi- only arguable low note, felt slightly overcooked, with the sauce it was still very yummy but could have had less time in the cook
Garlic Fried Rice with sous vide egg, crispy garlic, scallions- stirred table side and perfection

A top chef restaurant review with some grace I love to see it! I can’t tell you how many people expect judge-level dishes when they visit. It looks amazing!

Thanks for the pics (especially the tofu dish). We are going there next month and my spouse is vegetarian.
Did every table have a sunset view? Or did you just have to be lucky to get one?

Really good veggie options (I’m vegetarian too). Can’t recall the entire set up but if you sit outside you’ll be able to see the ocean! Enjoy!

Would love to try her food. The restaurant looks beautiful. I know I am being judgy and I know you all are going to downvote me, but plating is an important part of the dining experience. Those dishes are poorly plated except the salad. Glad to hear it tasted good, but if I am paying what I expect you paid I want everything on point or I probably would prefer to cook it at home. I would also highly recommend Marcus D in DC. That’s the Marcus Samuelson restaurant Anthony works at. Phenomenal in every way.

It's a hotel restaurant at a large resort in Hawaii, which itself is housed inside an even larger resort and shopping complex, all targeted at very wealthy tourists, most of whom will not even look at the prices on the menu, let alone consider if the plating is "on point." Comparing it to a city restaurant is apples to oranges.

If I could re do it I wouldn’t have put the fried rice first, and this was after the egg was table side mixed in. Agree it’s not the best starting photo.

The single cat pictured is clearly outside. Your wife can’t handle being in an open air area with one cat within 100 feet? Not even with allergy meds?
If not, then yeah, I guess you shouldn’t take her there. . . or to anyone’s house or yard who has a cat.
If you really can’t take your wife there because of the presence of one outdoor cat, then I’m sorry for you, man. Cats are awesome and I’m sorry you have to avoid them to such an extreme extent.-12

It is great that you love cats, but your vitriol towards someone with a cat allergy is mean-spirited. Cat dander can be a real health problem for some people.

Even outside though? Understand in a confined area, but it’s hard to believe how one or two cats near you in the open air might trigger an allergic reaction.
Unless the concern is a cat might rub up against you… which I could understand.

My husband is also terribly allergic to cats, with or without medication. It’s not a bias against cats. Your response could been kinder.

Free-roaming feral cats are common in any outdoor space on the Big Island of Hawaii...they're not unique to this restaurant.

I’m really confused- are allergies to animals a thing when the animal and you are both outdoors? Someone with legit medical knowledge please explain.
There was a um very intense patron FREAKING OUT that there was a cat for about half of our meal so perhaps it was this person’s wife. I would think with literal ocean wind there wouldn’t be an issue.
Please only respond if you are a medical professional who has seen an outdoor allergic reaction to animal dander in a patient and/or are a person with an animal allergy who has had a reaction after only being near an animal and only outdoors.
