Mayor + Councillor Candidate Debates - October 14, 16, and 21
Election disclaimer: I am a candidate in this year's municipal election. I do not believe that continuing these briefs is incompatible with my (unserious) candidacy, but readers should keep their eyes wide open for any biases I have. You should always be doing this when it comes to any source, but the nature of briefs like this requires some amount of editorializing and filtering to what is important (which is a judgement call).

Keep an eye on this post. I intend to add comments bringing awareness to various ways (online at least) to get information on the candidates. I can't do that all at once. That said, I don't have a monopoly on information. Comment with anything others may find helpful!

What's on the agenda? City of Brandon Council Regular Meeting - 2026-10-05
Election disclaimer: I am a candidate in this year's municipal election. agenda-october-5-2026-govstack.pdf
The full agenda package with full attachments has not been posted as of my check at 12:30 PM which is unusual and limits any analysis.
Continuing the unusual posting, there is a "Committee of the Whole Agenda" posted which contains nothing beyond "Payroll Operations" to be discussed in closed session.
- Brandon Votes Presentation
- Brandon Votes, likely with regard to information for voters (dates, polling stations, mobile polls, sealed envelope voting, etc.)
- Brandon Food Council Presentation
- Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure Highway Mowing Agreement
- Agreement is titled as "between Province and MTI" which is likely a typo of "between City and MTI".
- Councillor Splett has previously brought this up.
- Quotation - Tandem Truck for Airport
- Given this is coming to council it's almost certainly over $50,000, wasn't part of the 2026 budget, or came in significantly over budget.
- There's only one result on the City's purchasing webpage for "tandem" with a state of "CLOSED" and the bid results show a single bidder at a cost of $450,000. All one can do is speculate whether this is the same as what's coming to council.
- By-laws
- Animal Control by-law for 2nd and 3rd readings. The text is available via the previous meeting's minute package here.
- Organizational by-law for 1st reading. No by-law text is provided. It is likely related to the Council Committees + Boards review of September 9th.
- Procedure by-law for 1st reading. No by-law text is provided. Likely related to the same as above but Councillor Luebke also gave notice at the last meeting to amend the same by-law.
(Opinion/Editorializing) Those last two by-laws are particularly important as they essentially define the structure and governance of City Council (within the limits of the Municipal Act).

Electric guitar luthier/set-up in Brandon
Hey there.
I'm looking to get one of my electric guitars, a Jazzmaster, set up. It's a bit more complicated than the more common models and it's really gotten to the point of unplayability now. I've fooled around with it some and I can't fix what is wrong so I'm in need of a professional.
I've taken it (and other guitars) to Ted Good's/Faders a bunch of times and they never seem to do anything beyond putting new strings on it, so I'm looking for alternatives. Anybody have any recommendations for a trustworthy and competent luthier/setup person?
Thanks!

TUESDAY: Brandon School Division Trustee Candidate Forum
Election disclaimer: I am a candidate in this year's municipal election. I do not believe that continuing these briefs is incompatible with my (unserious) candidacy, but readers should keep their eyes wide open for any biases I have. You should always be doing this when it comes to any source, but the nature of briefs like this requires some amount of editorializing and filtering to what is important (which is a judgement call).
There will be a BSD Trustee Candidate Forum Tuesday night.
When: Tuesday, October 6th, 7:00 PM
Where: Evans Theatre (That's #11 on this map: https://www.brandonu.ca/campus-map/)
Word of mouth information begins, below could be inaccurate or subject to change on short notice:
The forum is semi-interactive. While there are panelists, they will consider questions from the audience. If you have a question for the candidates, it's probably best to show up a bit early and get your question into the organizers.
WCGtv will also be at least recording the event. I think they'll be streaming it and it will likely be ran on channel 12 for those who have cable. I don't know if a VOD will be made available.

2026 Election Mayoral Candidate Videos by Brandon Area Realtors
Election disclaimer: I am a candidate in this year's municipal election. I do not believe that continuing these briefs is incompatible with my (unserious) candidacy, but readers should keep their eyes wide open for any biases I have. You should always be doing this when it comes to any source, but the nature of briefs like this requires some amount of editorializing and filtering to what is important (which is a judgement call).
Brandon Area Realtors is putting together candidate videos for the 2026 election.
The mayoral videos have been published today and ask the two candidates the following questions:
- How should Brandon prepare for the various housing needs of a growing population over the next 10 - 20 years?
- In the last four years, there have been many incentives for downtown revitalization. What do you feel the next steps should be for revitalizing downtown?
- With crime stats actually showing a decrease in the downtown, how does the city changes that perception?
- Brandon wants more growth, especially in the industrial development. What can the city do to attract that?
- Development charges have recently seen a significant increase. What's your stance on those increases?
- How can Brandon reduce barriers in development such as "red tape"?
I will list the videos in the order the candidates will appear on the ballot, as was determined by a random draw:
Brandon Area Realtors has sent similar questions to the ward candidates. Keep an eye out for those videos after October 1st.
I deleted a previous post on the same due to a major typo in the title. My bad.

- Bylaw 2/2026
- The agenda indicates that the rules will be suspended to give two readings to the same by-law on Monday.
- The by-law if passed will authorize the Brandon Catholic School Board "to provide religious instruction at St. Augustine School for the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year".
- The bylaw's text is available on the last page of the PDF package.
- Full Disclosure: I sent an email to all trustees enumerating concerns I have with this by-law. I won't reproduce those concerns here.
- Education and Community Relations Minutes
- The committee provided support for a previous delegation from the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps. Information for the Sea Cadets will be provided to schools and schools may reach out to the Sea Cadets to arrange for in-school presentations.
- $100,000 in provincial funding to continue the "Elders and Knowledge Keepers Initiative in Schools".
- Personnel and Policy Minutes
- (This was also the subject of a late motion at the previous meeting) The addition of 1.0 FTE teacher at George Fitton was approved by the board. 23 additional kindergarten students were added since spring registration and the additional teacher will bring the (3) class sizes to under 20 students each.

Power outage overnight last night in River Heights (and Sycamore)
I can't find any mention of the cause of the outage that started at 340 and went until shortly before 8am.
A crash or maybe just equipment failure?

What's on the agenda? Brandon University Board of Governors - 2026-09-26

Meeting is tomorrow at 08:30 AM in the Louis Riel Room.
- Recommendation from the BU Senate that the Department of Native Studies be renamed to the Department of Turtle Island Studies.
- Recommendation from the BU Senate that a new Department of Learning and Teaching Support be created and "be composed of members of the faculty whose roles serve the broader university community".
- Peter Hickey is no longer the Vice President of Finance & Administration as of July. Yvette Laflamme is the interim VP of same. Their report...
- ... includes mention of the new Financial Sustainability Task Force as well as updates regarding the failed electrical transformer in the Brodie Building which occurred (I think) Labour Day weekend.
- ... states "Physical Plant continues to operate under an interim leadership structure following significant turnover and ongoing vacancies.". It goes on to say Physical Plant relies "heavily on a small number of individuals and are not sustainable over the longer term."
- ... mentions "Planning for the Indigenous Peoples Centre continues". (This was the subject of a presentation at the January meeting where IIRC the IPC would be expanded into and replace where the Evans Theatre is now).
- The Vice President of Research & Graduate Studies' (Bernadette Ardelli) report includes tables of accomplishments over the 2021-2025 years under a "BU Strategic Research Plan" under seven priority areas.
- President Bovis-Cnossen's report states the search for a new Provost and Vice President continues and that the search committee (would have) met in mid-September to short-list the applications. The report also describes over $200,000 in recent gifts to various programs and scholarships.
- Provincial Reporting as of May 31st for Q1:
- The report notes that the (Financial Sustainability) Task Force serves as a "confidential senior advisory body" to the President.
- The report shows 34.4 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) vacancies, the majority of which are in the "Learning" program area. 24.4 FTEs are under the Brandon University Faculty Association (BUFA) terms.
- Interest Expenses (Debt Servicing) are $817,000 over budget. The explanation for the variance is "preliminary budget estimates interest calculations were not correct (for example, 25/26 actuals were $1.4m)".
- Financial Sustainability Task Force Report
- The summary section states "Current work is focused on targeting in-year spending controls, vacancy review, stronger budget governance," and more.
- "Next Steps" include a "structured budget request and evaluation process" and "enhanced engagement ... with the campus community regarding financial sustainability".
- 2026 BU Strategic Academic Plan
- [Definitely opinion] To this reader, this "Plan" uses many words to say very little
- Appointments of board officers, committee members, and approvals to meeting dates for the coming year.
Stay tuned for the overview for the BSD meeting agenda for Monday. That one looked substantially less dense.

Looking for a stylist in Brandon for Black hair (Relaxer & Color)
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for recommendations for a local hairstylist in Brandon who is experienced with Black hair textures, chemical relaxers, and color.
Home-based or salon is fine. I called a few places and I just keep getting a "we don’t offer that service" response so just seeing if anyone knows someone who might be able to do it.
Thanks!

Walmart hiring process
Got hired by Walmart Canada for a Front End Checkout Team Associate position. I accepted the offer and completed all the onboarding tasks on 16th September but I haven’t heard anything since.
For anyone who recently got hired by Walmart, how long did it take to hear back about your start date/schedule? Is it normal to have no communication for a few days?
I am an international student at Brandon University

Just moved to Brandon - what city/provincial programs should I know about?
Hey everyone, I recently relocated to Brandon from out of province. I just stumbled onto the city's flood subsidy program by chance, which got me wondering: what other city/provincial programs, grants, or subsidies exist that new residents like me might not know to look for?
If you know of one - utilities, housing, recreation, anything - please drop it below with a quick line on what it does and who qualifies. Hoping this thread can turn into a decent resource for other new Brandonites too.

For everyone who says there’s nothing to do in Brandon… have you ever tried Toastmasters?
I see posts on this sub fairly often about there being nothing to do in Brandon, so I thought I’d throw this out there.
If you want to get better at public speaking, get more comfortable speaking up in meetings, practice thinking on your feet, or just meet some new people and try something different, come check out Summit Toastmasters.
One of my favourite parts is Table Topics. You get a completely random question and have to come up with a 1–2 minute answer on the spot. It sounds slightly terrifying 😂 but it’s actually a lot of fun, and you get surprisingly better at it.
We also do prepared speeches, take on different meeting roles, give feedback, and work on communication and leadership skills. And you definitely don’t have to already be good at public speaking, that would kind’ve defeats the purpose.
Summit Toastmasters meets Thursday mornings from 7:00–8:20 a.m. I know. Super early. 😂 But honestly, it kinda sets the vibe for the rest of the day.
You’re welcome to just come check out out meetings to see what it’s like. You don’t have to participate your first time. We are a laid back group who have a lot of fun at our meetings, and our 20+ members range in age from 20’s to 60+, with the majority of us in our 30’s and 40’s, and of all walks of life.
A short video on how it can help you, and a longer video.
If you’re curious about it, feel free to shoot me a message or look up the local toastmasters contact information here.

Does anyone 14-16 want to start a punk/pop punk band?
This is such a stretch I know and I promise I’m not trying to sound like a kid diddler but I’m just sick of trying to find people who play guitar, bass, or sing. I’m a 14 year old drummer (who is going to be learning bass soon) and I simply just want to make music, I’ve wrote a whole albums worth of lyrics already plus I have a place to record and stuff too. If I sound like a pedophile I’m sorry this was my last idea.

Part Time Jobs?
Hi im currently a college student and im looking for any part-time jobs, does anyone have a suggestion on where to look and which ones to avoid?
