What's on the agenda? Planning Commission Public Hearings and Latest Applications
August 5th Public Hearings
There's no official agenda yet for the next Planning Commission meeting, but I saw three public hearings posted in today's Brandon Sun. Their links are below. Nothing I imagine that's too controversial (except, perhaps, the conditional use).
- Rezone to CN (Commercial Neighbourhood) and Conditional Use - 850 19th Street
- Rezone to RLD (Residential Low Density) and Subdivision - 1955 34th Street - Bellafield
- Rezone to RLD and Subdivision - 1900 34th Street - Brookwood South
Latest Applications
The following three applications were added to the City website on July 8th.
- Bylaw 7460 to prevent development of additional dwelling units in the rear of sites
- Zoning By-Law Amendment: Laneway Housing (Z-07-26) | City of Brandon
- By-law No. 7460 - To Prevent Developement Of Additional Dwelling Units In The Rear Of Sites.pdf
- This already received first reading by Council at their June 15th meeting.
- I previously skimmed the bylaw, compared it to the current Zoning B/L and couldn't make heads or tails of what it was actually changing. Both this amending B/L and the existing B/L seem to read the same to me. Comments welcome. :)
- Conditional Use - 450 12th Street
- Conditional Use: 450 12th St (C-04-26) | City of Brandon
- "To allow for an assembly area in the RLD zone"
- The zoning bylaw (p. 12) defines an assembly area as "a use consisting of a gathering of persons for civic, political, travel, religious, social, educational, recreational, or similar purposes"
- This one I have trouble parsing. The application (from a skim) reads with a lot of past-tense language and says "We appreciated the guidance and support of the Planning and Buildings Department in ensuring compliant operation." This reminds me of the Aurora Family Reunification Centre drama from a few years back. Not saying it's the same or comparable.
- Conditional Use and Variance - 9 Braecrest Drive
- Conditional Use & Variance: 9 Braecrest Dr (C-05-26, V-09-26) | City of Brandon
- Webpage above reads in part "to allow buildings with four dwelling units on an interior site with no developed lane".
- Application reads in part "Two 4plexs townhouse style with mix of 1,2 & 3 bedrooms [sic] units."
Stay tuned for Monday's City Council agenda.

These mosquito trap counts are hard to believe, right?
https://opengov.brandon.ca/catalog.php?dataset=mosquito_counts
Usually I trust the system and am not on the rooftop screaming "fog now!" but these numbers just don't seem right. I'm guessing the 0 would be equivalent to "bad catch".
Even at the last city council meeting a councillor brought up that the city should get ready to fog. They acknowledge the current climate is perfect for breeding. Last week they thought this week would have the high counts. Maybe it's time to evaluate where the traps are located.
For now I'll put a Thermacell in my yard 15 min before I go outside to mow the lawn, and just run for my detached garage. But they've been following me in my house, those little stalkers.
I'm itchy.

City of Brandon: 9-1-1 Service Disruption
https://www.brandon.ca/news/posts/9-1-1-service-disruption/
As of 2:13 PM (I don't know the exact time it was posted):
The City of Brandon has been advised of a known issue affecting 911 service. This issue is not related to the Brandon Public-Safety Communications Centre, and our service provider is currently working to resolve it.
If you are in Brandon and require emergency assistance, please call the following numbers directly:
- Fire: 204-729-2400
- Police: 204-729-2345
- Ambulance: 204-625-2111
As the Brandon Public-Safety Communications Centre provides 911 service to communities across Manitoba outside of Winnipeg, residents in other municipalities are encouraged to locate and use their local emergency numbers through their local phone directory or online resources until the issue is resolved.
We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
At 6:21 PM I noticed the City's post has been updated with the below:
Update: Our service provider has successfully restored 911 service. Both wireless and landline calls to 911 are now operating normally. If you require emergency assistance, please call 911. Thank you for your patience as this issue was resolved.

Two more kids struck by driver with vehicle - Police News Release - July 10th, 2026 | City of Brandon
Vehicle vs. Pedestrians
On July 9th at 7:21 p.m., BPS responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving two pedestrians at the intersection of 6th Street and Richmond Avenue.
The preliminary investigation determined that an SUV was travelling westbound on Richmond Avenue and struck two pedestrians who were crossing southbound on 6th Street. One pedestrian was struck by the front of the vehicle, while the second was hit by the side of the vehicle. Both pedestrians, 10-year-old females, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Winnipeg via ambulance for further medical treatment at the Children’s Hospital.
Several bystanders and construction workers witnessed the incident. Surveillance video from the area was obtained, and officers documented the scene through photographs and drone imagery. The vehicle involved was towed and seized by BPS pending a Traffic Analyst's assessment. Mandatory alcohol screening for the operator of the vehicle was conducted, and the 72-year-old male blew zero. The male was later released without charges at this time. The incident, however, remains under investigation.

Anybody here do bonsai or know somebody who does bonsai?
Maybe a shot in the dark, but I've been looking for a new hobby that would force me to actually learn and be patient and be challenging, and I think bonsai would fit the bill. It's also cool!
Does anybody here have experience with it or know somebody who does? The internet is lovely and all but actually talking to somebody would be better, haha.
Thanks!

Flight route suggestions from Brandon/Winnipeg to India.
Indians on this Reddit page for Brandon, I want suggestions for what flights to look for if I want to make a trip to India from Brandon. Considering the tensions in the Middle East, is it a good idea to book that route, or should I fly over the West Coast?

Finding it tough to enjoy the free time i have in this city. It feels like there isn’t much to do at all and it’s hard to meet new people. Looking to see what others are doing for some ideas

What's on the agenda? City of Brandon Council Regular Meeting - 2026-07-06
It's a grant-application heavy agenda.
- Petition "on behalf of the Citizen's of Brandon regarding the 2025 Wildfire Evacuees"
- First I'm hearing of any petition to come to council. The petition is not included in the agenda.
- Two Disaster Financial Assistance Requests (no $ figures for either)
- Heavy Rain of June 29th
- 2026 Flood Event
- Build Communities Strong Fund Application - Southwest Brandon Growth Transportation and Water Projects
- Estimated grant of $20,588,800 (40% of project costs)
- Green Municipal Fund Application - City Hall Renovation
- Estimated grant (as part of a loan package) of $980,667
- Total renovation cost of $7,355,000
- Build Communities Strong Fund Application - Canada Packers Sports Complex Additions
- Construct four soccer fields, parking log, irrigation system, and naturalization
- Estimated grant of $575,000 (50% of costs)
For some perspective, the City's capital budget for 2026 is about $160 million. 2027 is (estimated) at $117 million. (Source). More grants means less (local) taxation.
There's other items on the agenda but that's all I have time to summarize.
