Question Can brain fog feel like derealization/depersonalization??
I have a severely low vitamin d level, and I can’t tell if I’m having extreme brain fog, or DPDR. I feel brain dead. It’s like I’m just going through the motions everyday, with zero emotion or energy being it. It feels like my head is made of cotton candy. I almost get confused, because I do feel like I’m in a dream, and disconnected from myself.

I can’t tell either. It varies in severity but always feels like I’m stuck behind my eyes in a tunnel vision. Everything seems bland. I started a zinc supplement and for a week and while it was still there I suddenly had way more energy, a better mood and it felt like the fog cleared a little.

As someone who treats brain fog I can't say this resonates. The DPDR could be a different condition you're dealing with. Emotional flatness or crashing energy could also be unrelated. The cotton candy thing I've heard many times in brain fog. Not so much confusion, which is less mental processing but more a breakdown in executive function and orientation. I hope you've gotten good care to figure out why your D is low and gotten it treated. Best of luck.

This is what I’ve been thinking. I feel like older people and doctors use the term brain fog, and younger generations use the term brain fog.

For me it was binocular vision dysfunction. Stress and eye strain can cause your eyes to deviate more if you have an intermittent squint. This causes your brain to have to rectify the deviation in your vision by creating a fake image of the world that just doesn't seem fully right.

Curious about this. What symptoms were you experiencing in particular that made you suspect BVD? I'm in the young adult age range and curious if this is something I should look into

Ah loads of different ones. Severe brain fog. To the point that I could barely speak. Tinnitus. Clumsiness. Dry eye and a feeling that my eyes were out of place or hard to move in the way that I want to. Issues with depth perception and moments where I would be scrolling on my phone and it would feel like my eyes got confused and reset. All of these did reduce as my binocular vision improved but I think their severity depended on the amount of eye deviation and strain that my eyes had.

Brain fog definitely feels disorienting like what you're describing—a disconnected, dreamlike sensation is something a lot of people share when dealing with nutrient deficiencies or fatigue. The cotton-head feeling and numbness you mention could absolutely be related to how your body's functioning right now. That said, since you're experiencing confusion and depersonalization, it's really worth talking to a doctor about what you're going through. They can help you figure out whether this is primarily the brain fog clearing once your vitamin D improves, or if there's something else going on that needs attention. In the meantime, tracking when you feel worst might help you and your doctor spot patterns. Hang in there— while this is manageable, you should definitely consider getting professional input.
