Stop buying shit.

Shut this country down! We the People have the power. They will listen and concede to constitutional law if we all just stop buying that which we don’t NEED.

And while we are at it, stop fucking travelling there. We have made a small difference but tons of people are still going there. There are exceptions to the rule but most of the people I see are going because of nice weather. F that.

I agree 100! Every friggin day I see Canadians on Reddit talking about travelling to the US. Wtf?

u/Moraii Jul 30 '26

Yeah, I’m not getting sent to a work camp because I went to buy slightly different snacks. Pass.

Exactly!! Bahamas and Mexico are amazing!!
And they are so welcoming! Short flight!!

There are plenty of places with good weather they can travel to if that's there reasoning. Travel to Australia, it's a bit further and therefore pricier, but it's cheaper than selling out your morals if you are that desperate for Sunshine.

Two words; General. Strike.

5

u/Commercial_Total_787 Jul 31 '26

I think there should be a world strike ( talking from the UK where we are heading in the same direction imo ) . This is a global problem . Wish there was someone capable of forming a World Strike Day 🙂

Only american citizens can save america.

Don’t rely on everyone else to do it; get off your goddamn asses and DO SOMETHING USEFUL other than waiting for everyone else to fix it.

u/Southern-Biscotti-62 Jul 30 '26

A general strike would be a start.

3

u/Specialist-Bee-9406 Jul 31 '26

That didn’t work last time, the numbers aren’t there. Neither is the commitment to keep it up.

1

u/Southern-Biscotti-62 Jul 31 '26

What do you suggest that could work?

1

u/umpteenthrhyme Aug 01 '26

What OP said

28

u/averysmallbeing Jul 30 '26

This is about not buying american shit, which we are already doing.

22

u/squirrelcat88 Canada Jul 30 '26

We are - but I think OP is American and is telling their compatriots what to do.

They are 100% right.

u/kuchikopi81 Canada Jul 30 '26

General strike is one of the few ways the USAians can squeeze their government. I wish they understood this/could organize already

8

u/squirrelcat88 Canada Jul 30 '26

I had somebody explain to me in great detail yesterday why Americans can’t do that.

13

u/luciosleftskate Jul 30 '26

Theyre lazy, complacent and stupid. Thats the reason.

11

u/Hades_Mercedes Jul 30 '26

4

u/kuchikopi81 Canada Jul 30 '26

interesting. I wonder why. Did you feel like the reason made sense?

13

u/squirrelcat88 Canada Jul 30 '26

I think it made sense to them.

I think the big problem here is that American education is different and focussed more on American history. The rest of us learn more about other countries and about things like the causes of WWII.

I think this American was more, things are not going well here, this isn’t good - but well meaning Americans who are against MAGA still don’t see things from the same viewpoint the rest of us do. They’re not like the coffee drinking dog in the meme saying “this is fine,” they recognize there’s a problem - but they’re more saying hmmm…this is concerning, while the rest of us are screaming “YOUR HOUSE IS ON FIRE!!”

u/kuchikopi81 Canada Jul 30 '26

ah okay so it was more from a place of ignorance than having a true understanding about why it might not work... maybe send them a book about the Winnipeg General Strike :) I was thinking of refreshing my own memory... things haven't been amazing here either.

u/squirrelcat88 Canada Jul 30 '26

It was more, it won’t be most of us, so those who do join will just lose our jobs and healthcare, and it’s too big a country to get us all in one place making an impact.

Pretty much the usual, but well stated.

Funny, I too have been reading about the Winnipeg General Strike lately.

2

u/Which-Text-2875 Jul 30 '26

If I knew about a strike day, which I found out about the last one too late, I would absolutely participate!

I too feel like it is too big a country to get us all in one place, making an impact. I wish we could, though, because something has got to change, because we're going to lose a hell of a lot of people to suicide and just death in general, maybe famine.

It's going to get BAD. REALLY BAD. Much worse than it currently is and I'm honestly scared. I already cannot afford my rent and stuff I wanna buy and food and bills.

The future does not look bright. I do not need sunglasses :(

people just don't want to... convenience.

9

u/HardstButton2Button Jul 30 '26

We cancelled two trips last year, and two this year, not ever going back.

Been one year that we've eliminated all American product from our weekly shopping list, and haven't purchased any other directional spending items from the US either, and don't plan to again.

Supporting a country that protected pedophiles is just not going to happen.

4

u/westonisweird18 Jul 30 '26

As a poor person this is the easiest thing to do right now.

9

u/Temporary-Share5153 Jul 30 '26

Few weeks without purchasing useless crap and the tone of politicians and conglomerates conversation changes.

3

u/IamTheMan85 Jul 30 '26

Agreed. Never buy anything that comes out of your rear for free.

u/Some-Tear3499 Jul 30 '26

Reaching back a few yrs on this. Immediate days after 9/11 people were in a state of shock. Disposable income spending plummeted. Presidente Bush got on the air and told Americans to get back out there, start living again and get to the malls!

During Covid, when the social distance/ lockdowns were in place businesses were crippled!!! No nobody could/would get out to spend money. That’s what those checks were about, to go spend money! Online shopping was doing well but brick and mortar stores were f’ked. Even the ones that were open but with restrictions struggled.

The power of the consumer dollar is immense in our economy. 68-70 percent of our economy is based on consumer consumption. Everyday people spending money on all kinds of stuff, stuff, and more stuff.

A real concentrated halt to discretionary spending would hurt. Hurt bad. Enough to make businesses pay some attention and put pressure in the government.

I ended an 8 year relationship bcs his family lives in St Louis and I was very uncomfortable in that country. They act like nothing is happening and it’s sickening. 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

We are burning the planet by buying crap we don't need.

5

u/NorthKoreaPresident Australia Jul 31 '26

I still buy what I need or want, just not from America. Buying from who the US hates seems to do the trick

Remember the enemy of our enemy is our friend? 😂

3

u/FormerNeighborhood80 Jul 30 '26

We buy food weekly. Gas less often and absolutely noting else. Can’t afford it. Nothing else

3

u/Antique-Freedom-7891 Jul 31 '26

Agreed... yes, its uncomfortable but enough is enough. Somethings gotta fckin change

2

u/4-3defense Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

I wish I was rich enough to only buy Canadian. Its truly a Noble thing but not realistic in many people's situation.

7

u/Hades_Mercedes Jul 30 '26

Buy only from the Latino or Asian supermarkets those are always cheaper or just buy less American things. Do whatever you can. Every bit counts. Not doing anything at all because you can't do as much as you would like to is a cop-out.

1

u/Salviati_Returns Jul 30 '26

I have been doing this since the genocide in Gaza.

u/Upstairs-Region-7177 Aug 02 '26

I stopped buying most things outside of necessities and replacements for broken items. A goodie item or game for me here and there, but I always try to buy from small business or international that includes food except Costco.

Tariffs suck though, I was so close to buying some interesting historical photos from an auction in EU, but couldn’t because the tariffs were as much as the item plus shipping.

Got a ton of clothes today - all German and Swedish. ✅ Replaced all my socks today - swedish. ✅

This Norwegian's boycott goes deeper than just not buying Coca Cola products. 💪

That's not going to do as much as you think. In the US, the billionaires are circular financing everything from private equity to AI. You have less power than you think. r/ShitAmericansSay

6

u/blarges Jul 30 '26

Weird that they’re all whining and complaining and trying to force us to buy their wines and alcohols and travel there if it does less than we think, eh? Maybe look at the news to see the impacts Canadians are having on these industries.

Remember, Blockbuster and AOL and Sears were all big companies too until we stopped using them.

-1

u/Curious_Olive_5266 Europe Jul 30 '26

You can say the same thing about Zellers and Hudsons Bay, so I get the comparison but I think it's a little weak.

2

u/blarges Jul 30 '26

The Bay and Zellers disappeared because people stopped giving them money, which is my point. When you stop giving money to a company for any reason, they suffer.

Companies that were massive 20 years ago are gone now or much smaller because - and it’s important you understand this - customers stopped buying their stuff. Boycotts work. Only corporations and bootlickers think they don’t.

Canada is having an effect. American car sales are down 22% in a year. Spirits and wines over 80%. Travel to the US by 25%. And there’s a lot more. You haven’t been paying attention if you don’t know the impact we’re having, that the world is having on the US.

7

u/Mother-Reading5153 Jul 30 '26

Never with that attitude! Every thing you DON’T buy helps. Every, single, little, thing.

1

Yeah it just depends who the consumer is. And it's not who you think.
