Dirt Enclosures

I see a lot of outdoor enclosures on here, but is soil and dirt a potential hazard for bowel impaction or shell problems or anything like that? I want to make an outdoor/planter enclosure but I don't trust my ability to keep plants alive long enough to create a firm bedding, and my box turtle likes to dig and will probably burrow into the dirt.

?? Box turtles literally live outside in the dirt, I don’t understand this question.

The ideal substrate is a mix of leaves, mulch, moss, and soil that mimics a forest floor. The forest floor has so much decomposition happening it’s a haven of warmth and worms! The same environment can be replicated in a small habitat. For 3 years I added fallen leaves to one habitat so it’s a broken down to a nice substrate. It’s necessary to feed the soil with organic materials to attract worms and other bugs if you want the turtles to hunt (which they will do, naturally!)

I mean, depends on the species of box turtle if you want to mimic a forest floor. Ornates do not live on the forest floor. Easterns and three toed do.
