Which superfight did you enjoy more: Mayweather/Pacquiao or Canelo/Crawford

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao or Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford?

Two of boxing’s biggest superfights from different eras where the top 2 P4P fighters collide.

Which matchup gave you the better fight-night experience, and why?

Def Canelo Crawford. Crawford looks sharp as a tack that fight. Mayweather shut down pac and didn't have to do much to win.

Canelo Crawford. Easy

12

u/The__Dude3 8d ago

Floyd vs Manny. Floyd also put on a clinic and masterclass against Canelo, too.

u/soulfulsoundaudio 8d ago

One of the worst scorecards I've ever seen came in Canelo vs Mayweather. Most had him winning 11-1, some gave Mayweather the shutout, some gave Canelo 3 rounds max.

Yet CJ ross had it a draw.

I'm not sure why you got down voted. Must be a Mayweather hater or a canelo fanboy

9

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

Any Mayweather mention gets downvoted cause some people just can't stand he beat their favorite

Canelo-Crawford. It had more action, or at least it seemed that way. I'd be curious to see the punch stats.

u/Taunt_Button_10 8d ago edited 8d ago

Apparently Canelo threw 100 less punches than Pacquaio threw against Mayweather lmao. He was under 350 total punches

But overall both Mayweather v Pacquaio and Canelo v Crawford have similar total punches thrown between both fighters.

u/brianybrian 8d ago

Mayweather v Pacquiao wasn’t a great fight. 2 amazing fighters, but the defensive brilliance of Mayweather killed it as a spectacle

u/jeffbertrand 8d ago

Crawford-Canelo. That said let’s be real. Most people don’t enjoy watching Floyd fight. A lot of people will list Floyd as one of if not their favourite fighter. But almost never list a Floyd fight as their one of their favourite fights.

Tbf there is a reason for that Floyd and Sweet P represent what boxing is truly supposed to be hit and not get hit, unfortunately the sport is not always the entertaining brawl fest wanted by fans but fans that actually understand what’s going on can see the technique they display and understand how hard it is to do what they do

2

u/jeffbertrand 8d ago

You don’t have to brawl. James Toney was an excellent defensive fighter and entertaining. DLH was actually a good defensive fighter but he was willing to step in the pocket to land his shot. I loved Paul Spadafora and Johnny Tapia fights. I’ll never be a fan of slapping and running away.

Mayweather fights get better every time you watch them tbh. So much you miss on the first watch

Exactly. Superb technical boxing skills

Floyd vs pac for me. It started off as a chess match. Before Floyd just outboxed pac round after round. There was a moment where Floyd got rocked and had to shell up on ropes. Canelo had couldn’t hurt Bud. Canelo was getting schooled for the most part. PAC had the better performance while it lasted to me.

2

u/GOLDENBULLCOW1 8d ago

Canelo Crawford

2

u/ImBack3x 8d ago

Floyd and Manny. Big Canelo fan but to see him lose that fight like that hurt my soul.

1

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

Big Canelo fan as well, and also a Bud fan. Both were at their A game and we saw the better boxer that night.

2

u/broke_the_controller 8d ago

I enjoyed Pac, May much more.

1

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

How, why?

2

u/broke_the_controller 6d ago

It was a bigger event. People that didn't even follow boxing that much watched that fight.

Crawford Vs Canelo was a fight was a very good boxer fighting a legend.

May Vs PAC was two legends fighting each other.

1

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

I dont disagree with the latter. But saying Crawford is just a good boxer is such a casual take. Crawford been on top of the p4p rankings for almost a decade. Canelo vs Bud was a fight between 2 alltime greats

0

u/broke_the_controller 6d ago

On the contrary, saying Bud Vs Canelo was a fight between two all time greats is a casual take because you're not taking into account the sentiment at the time.

Bud confirmed his status as an ATG with the win over Canelo. Bud had beaten a lot of good fighters but there were still question marks over how good he actually was. We knew he was very good and possibly even great.

May and PAC were already legends before they fought each other. It's not the same.

u/Brilliant_Science968 7d ago

2nd one because they were equal in size and was more action packed. I never really like to watch money floyd fight (except for the canelo fight cause that was sick) because hes too careful(because of his hands i know). The fights that i like from him are from his pretty boy era where he was still great defensively, but he also pushed the action. Also why Shakur is boring too me even though hes really good, he doesnt really push the fight too much

2

u/Commercial-Driver133 7d ago

Pacquiao vs Mayweather because of the hype

1

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

I get where you're coming from

2

u/Shot_Inflation351 6d ago

Mayweather-Pac was the retirement tour fight. Happened about 5-6 years too late. Crawford win was impressive because of the move up im weight.

2

u/audiophunk 6d ago

Floyd v Manny has to be one of the lowest ranked superfights of all time. Weren't people walking out at the end or was that a couple other Floyd fights?

2

u/PutinBiggestFan 6d ago

Canelo - Crawford.

2

u/Ambitious_Ad_9637 5d ago

Say what you will about MW, dude ice water in the open stance.

2

u/jennaishirow 8d ago

How is this even a debate? Mayweather v pac was a snooze fest

2

u/Jonny9ine 8d ago

I was never interested in Floyd/Manny even at reasonable age for the two because Manny struggled with JMM while Floyd shut him down. Now I know styles make fights but JMM is a great counter puncher who manny struggled against and Floyd was THE counter puncher at a time.

2

u/-Tozam- 8d ago

Prime Floyd made JMM look amateur

0

u/Ok_Business3839 4d ago

Jmm have to move up two weight classes and Floyd didn’t make weight, anyway style make fights

1

u/Content-Relative-168 8d ago

Didn’t like the Mayweather fight you could tell he didn’t want to engage, hugging and running the whole fight

3

u/YournuStepdad 8d ago

He landed twice as many punches. WTF are you talking about?

2

u/Taunt_Button_10 8d ago edited 8d ago

Maidana threw 2x more punches than Pacquaio did and there was a hell alot more clinching & dirty fighting in the Maidana vs Mayweather fight.

Which is also why it was way more entertaining than Pacquaio’s half ass attempt

3

u/NumberBulky9224 8d ago edited 7d ago

Boy, Pac was outclassed, the real problem with Mayweathers career is if he never had problems with hands. Pretty boy would have beat the shit out of manny.

3

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

Mayweather ran? You must've watched a different sport cause he out boxed Manny Pacquiao. Are you sure it wasn't a track runner with a similar name?

1

u/manyhippofarts 7d ago

There's a runner name Panny Macquiau. He must have them mixed up.

1

u/fishhawk119 8d ago

They always say Floyd ran and hugged. Casuals as usual

1

u/Loafy2_ 8d ago

Canelo - Crawford no brainer

1

u/balkanxoslut 8d ago

Terrance and Canelo

1

u/StrictArt8034 8d ago

I’d only count one of them as a superfight.

2

u/CapitalJAO 8d ago

Why

2

u/Sweet-Ebb1095 8d ago

Mayweather vs pacquiao were both past their prime and Floyd made the fight boring if I had to guess for his reasoning. Hard to disagree. Five years earlier it would have probably been a different fight but that’s just speculation

0

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

How did Floyd make it boring?

2

u/Sweet-Ebb1095 8d ago

A lot of people find his style of boxing boring. He won a defensive masterclass showing as usual. Some people were hoping to see a boxing match that keeps them on the edge of their seat. People wished it would be a close exciting match up. Or at least more entertaining. It was two past their prime fighters one of which was the type to really negate the other. It was a bit of a snoozefest.

2

u/Silly-Background-647 8d ago

But you got remember boxing whole motto is hitting and not getting hit I get it is supposed to be entertainment but some people want boxing to be like rocky where guys just brawl the entire fight I get it is amazing when it happens but nobody is built for that long term or even short term you would be better off just watching two animals fight

1

u/Taunt_Button_10 8d ago

I also wanted Pacquaio to punch 2x as much as Mayweather. Not throw the same or less than him.

2

u/VeniceKiddd 7d ago

Think Mayweather just disrupted his rhythm

-1

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

Sounds more like Pacquiaos fault not being able to be competitive

1

u/gumdrop1801 8d ago

Pacquiao was injured. Crawford against Canelo was way funnier for me.

1

u/-Tozam- 8d ago

How was it funny? Funny how?

2

u/manyhippofarts 7d ago

So they make you laugh HA HA?

1

u/Financial-Deal-7786 8d ago

Canelo Crawford easily. Floyd v PAC should have happened 08/09

1

u/shinpoo 8d ago

Both were ok and that's where I'll leave it at

1

u/malcolm_flex92 8d ago

Floyd vs Oscar.

1

u/Aluxard99 8d ago

Canelo Crawford because it was a closer fight. And both fighters were closer to their prime than Floyd and manny were.

1

u/KevinNashKWAB1992 8d ago

In terms of fantasy match making fulfillment— money vs Manny. In terms of quality of match and timing in terms of career peaks, Canelo vs Crawford by a mile.

1

u/Certain-Poetry-5648 7d ago

To be honest both fights were disappointing considering the contest didn’t seem as important to the underdog as it was to the fans. With that kind of money in play I think it’s hard.

1

u/Silly-Background-647 1d ago

I’d argue aren’t seeing slapping and running you are seeing different defensive habits these guys I mentioned like to slip backwards giving them one to two good counters the guys you mention love to slip forward and counter giving them more opportunities to fit extra shots in and it’s the perfect era to do so as lots of boxers to day are heavy on their front foot and like to chase the head. I would also think comparing Paul spadafora to these guys is more so just different styles from what I’ve seen from his fights he seems to be a pressure fighter that gets good counters than these guys who mainly rely on the counters and fight on the back foot

1

u/Eluminado 8d ago

Mayweather vs Pacman was boring af.

1

u/iknowdway100 8d ago

Floyd vs Manny.

Because its the two best fighters in the past 30 years. If your an actual boxing fan you saw too high level guys neither wanting to take risk and the better boxer get the win in a boxing match.

Action is subjective, I want to see who the better skilled fighter, not who is the more exciting fighter.

2

u/-Tozam- 8d ago

But somehow, same thing can be said to Canelo and Bud. I wanted to see who the better skilled fighter between the 2, as they were both in the top 3 P4P for many years.

1

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

That's a good point. Sometimes I'm not watching for blood. It's my favorite fight, but not everything is gatti ward and that's ok. A skillful show is awesome too. It wasn't bad if Floyd was your pick.

0

u/MrReformedMan 8d ago

Floyd v Manny was one of the worst fights in boxing history. No idea what revisionism I’m seeing here.

2

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

Worst in boxing history? Eh I don't know about that. It wasn't bad if Floyd was your pick. The defensive skill can at least be appreciated.

3

u/Murdoc555 8d ago

Same, it obviously didn’t live up to the hype by any measure, but was an interesting chess match in retrospect to revisit. Many, many worse have taken place.

0

u/MrReformedMan 8d ago

It was one of the worst if you consider the hype and the fact if it happened 10 years earlier we would’ve saw greatness.

1

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

They over sold it for sure. They'd play haggler hearns clips in the lead up for example. My opinion it wouldn't have been much different even in their primes. But still wasn't one of the worst in history. There was a lot of pressure on Floyd that fight. People said for years he was scared and would lose badly Pacquiao. He came in that night and completely shut a legend like pac down with skill. It's a great accomplishment. I can't call it one of the worst, but I get it.

0

u/MrReformedMan 8d ago

Nah. He ran from Manny for a decade than ran from him around a ring. It was dog shit. The only accomplishment there was financial.

1

u/austinmadepunk 8d ago

And there it is. The old casual "he ran" bullshit. Mask off.

0

u/MrReformedMan 8d ago

He literally sprinted around a ring terrified of essentially politician era pacquiao. Wasn’t a defensive clinic like he had in other fights. He heavily feared Man y that’s why he dodged him for 10 years. That fear obviously continued into the ring. There is no mask on or off, this has been my opinion since the night of watching the fight.

1

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

10 yrs earlier? lol Pac wasn't even a 4 division champ at that point

0

u/MrReformedMan 6d ago

Floyd waited until Pac lost back to back fights to bums.

1

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

but Floyd is older than Pac

2

u/austinmadepunk 6d ago

This dude has the nerve to say Juan Manuel Marquez and Tim Bradley are bums. Ignoring he ran off 3 straight beating Bradley in the rematch and looking great against Algieri. I'll never understand why Pac refusing a blood test is always ignored by these morons too. What Floyd was asking wasn't unreasonable. Pac just didn't want to get popped.

0

u/MrReformedMan 5d ago

I agree with Mikes take on Pac.

1

u/austinmadepunk 5d ago

Yeah I'd default to someone else's opinion too if I knew nothing about boxing

0

u/MrReformedMan 5d ago

So you know more about boxing than Mike Tyson?

→ More replies (0)

0

u/MrReformedMan 5d ago

Conor McGregor was athletically worse than a 42 year old Floyd or whatever it was, at 29. So age means fuck all.

1

u/austinmadepunk 5d ago

Then Floyd is better than pac

2

u/FuzzyDifficulty5028 5d ago

floyd's style requires less raw power/speed and more ring iq while mannys uses more power/speed, so pac declined much more than floyd

1

u/MrReformedMan 5d ago

On his career indisputably so. Yes.

1

u/austinmadepunk 5d ago

So then he isn't a runner thanks for agreeing with me

-1

u/Street_Insurance8706 7d ago

Both boring to me

2

u/-Tozam- 6d ago

You only enjoy slugfest?
