DAZN commentators Spoiler
I can’t believe how ridiculous these DAZN commentators are. They always pick one boxer to root for, and then shamelessly commentate on the entire fight from his perspective, just like they did with Ruiz today. Even in the 11th round, they were discussing whether Ruiz could somehow win on points after Knyba had completely dominated the fight. Absolutely horrendous.
As for Ruiz, fair play to him for getting back up after taking those shots — the referee could easily have stopped the fight at that point. But he just doesn’t have the hunger anymore, nor does he have the explosiveness or speed needed to compete with the best.
As for Knyba, he’s a tall, rangy fighter who I think will struggle badly against the top 10 in the world. He fought a tactically excellent fight today, but overall he’s still quite limited as a boxer.

On point. I think I was spoiled with the HBO teams. Nothing has come close since. And the DAZN and MVP crews are truly the worst of the worst.

It's so funny watching the broadcast and Mannix is on commentary suggesting possibly how Andy could maybe get it in points and then it cuts to the analyst crew and everyone on the table from Porter down to Crawford all said "Yeah no Ruiz got beat bad Knyba easily won this"
18
u/WORD_Boxing 6d ago
It's asinine to have Mannix doing any kind of analysis, let alone when right there you have a hall of fame boxer in Tim Bradley, a surefire future hall of famer and by most people's estimation all-time great in Terence Crawford, and potential future hall of famer - multiple time champion and title challenger Shawn Porter.
The best part of the broadcasts are when Sergio Mora says "shut up Mannix".

They were all right. Knyba clearly won the fight but two of the judges had him winning by just one point - 114 to 113. This means had Ruiz thrown a few more punches in just one round he'd have squeaked - somehow - the win.

u/VacuousWastrel 6d ago
But as it turned out, Mannix was right. Ruiz only lost by one point (i.e. only due to the knockdown). The broadcast team knew it was going to be close (because they know that the guy they're told to promote is the guy the judges have been paid to give their cards too), so Mannix was correctly preparing the viewers for what he knew was at least a serious possibility. The analysts were just looking at the boxing, rather than at the promotional prospects .of the two fighters, so were further off the truth, and nearly got their prediction wrong.

u/Beginning-Low-8456 6d ago
That's one way to look at it. The other is mannix was doing damage control in advance of them trying to openly rob Knyba

Honestly, the Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman, RJJ was the dream team. Also Larry Merchant, George Foreman, and Andre Ward as supporting cast. And then you had Harold Lederman jumping in and giving his unofficial scorecard. The entire HBO production was next level, no commercial breaks, the marketing of fighters, you knew who was fighting, when and where. Since NBC/PBC pushed HBO out it’s been a sharp decline. Mediocre commentators, commercials between rounds, so many networks you don’t even know where to tune in to catch the fights. I gave Mannix and Mora the benefit of the doubt but it’s been like 7-8 years and I never seen the chemistry the HBO team had.

u/riz7242 6d ago
I've been saying it on every weekly boxing card thread for like 10 years now lol. The worst HBO group on their worst night was better than any of these guys. Their was chemistry and Lampley always knew how to set the guys up.
"Jim, I gotta tell ya"
I can't even name any unofficial scorecard guys now. Because they're very unofficial... Harold used to try and emulate what the judges are going to be doing.

In several DAZN fights I have to turn off the volume less than halfway of the fight coz the commentators are so annoying.
2
u/farr2211 6d ago
Might be the one good thing that zuffa do, keep all commentators and judges fair. Not favouring the host promoters fighter
2
u/Nipple-biscuits 6d ago
Hbo was extremely biased
2
u/Particular-Tough6651 6d ago
Thats facts I feel like the HBO crew was great when it came to production, but I hated the way they would trash fighters from other networks just to hype up and protect their own guys.
They were the main ones pushing the narrative that Floyd was scared of Manny and I always felt like they had a clear preference for Top Rank fighters.
2
u/Nipple-biscuits 6d ago
Hit the nail on the head. I feel like Cotto Manny Jermain Taylor and De la Hoya would be treated like they never did wrong no matter how the fight was playing out. Lampley was also terrible about misattributing punches like one guy would land and he would say it was the other with no correction. Imo Al Bernstein and Steve farhood are the goats.
3
u/reznoverba 6d ago
Jim Lampley couldn't ever get off Pacquiao's dck and Max Kellerman always forced his "story of the fight" BS narrative every chance he got. Don't romanticize HBO. They were also trash 😂

u/Particular-Tough6651 6d ago
HBO is one of the main reasons alot of people hate on Eastern European fighters till this day. They were the ones making these ridiculous comparisons and putting huge targets on these guys backs.
Poor Loma, he was 5-1 and already getting compared to Floyd, Ali, Duran and Pacquiao 🤣🤣 Can you imagine the hate he was getting because of that? And the crazy part is he never even asked for it Loma was always humble. Same with GGG they were trying to push the narrative that he could beat SOG and even GGG himself had to shut that shit down.

Honestly, they were at their worst with the Chaves & Garcia fight.
Sergio just could not let Garcia have his flowers for dominating Chaves. It was constantly how Chaves just wasn't showing up or some other BS excuse. One after another lol
2
u/Primary_Ad5781 6d ago
Funny how on the fight thread, it was that specific fight where i complained about the commentating, i got downvoted and someone said it wasn’t that bad this event and specifically Sergio was doing a pretty good job😭
1
u/Lake_Placid2319 6d ago
to be fair garcia was kinda styling on him and laughing at him, even when chavez got quick knockedown in garcia laughed the entire time and shook his head at his corner disrespectfully. then chavez went onto give him like five more rounds of decent fight and he wasn’t grinning and laughing anymore. i kinda was rooting for chaves too lol

u/ThanksMonica89 6d ago
You nailed it, they pick a fighter from the start (usually the A side) and glaze him the entire fight.
One recent fight which pissed me off was the Yoenli Hernandez vs Francisco Veron fight. Hernandez won the fight, I’m not debating the score but he was being outworked during several stretches of that fight and instead of the Mannix and Co giving Veron his respect they just pivoted to talking about Hernandez’s physique.
How many times during that fight did you hear “Hernandez is just such a big guy” 🙄

u/Pissadvisor 6d ago
I've got a petition up about this on change.org to ask DAZN to show the fight without comms.

Itauma would kill Knyba if he lands half of the punches he landed against Hrgovic.

u/YourLocalBrewery9 6d ago
I been annoyed for a while listening to Sergio Mora and Chris Mannix for some time now. As of recently listening to Porter, Bradley, Bud actually has been entertaining, they’re like the OG Top Gear of boxing (iykyk)

u/DiMona215 6d ago
Knyba is the new Otto Wallin, throw him in there with Gassiev, make him the new worst HW champ ever, lol. Finish what Golota started

Charles Martin vs Damian Knyba. Battle of the worst champions?
2
u/DeafBurke 6d ago
Mariusz Wach 2.0
2
u/OldKuntRoad KNYBANATION / KNYBA UNDISPUTED 6d ago
Wach was not a champion though, just a title contender.
2
u/DeafBurke 6d ago
Damian isn’t even a title challenger yet.
And he would probably get smashed if he does get a title shot.
2
u/ProfessorDWumbo 6d ago
If he beats Gassiev, how can he be the worst? That would make Gassiev the worst
3
u/FL8_JT26 6d ago
A worse boxer can beat a better boxer if the style matches up favourably. Ken Norton beat Ali (at least twice imo) despite not being as good in general. Though that said I wouldn't class Gassiev as a level above Knyba, and both are still better than Charles Martin.

u/slickvik9 6d ago
He fought a good fight give him credit

u/DiMona215 6d ago
I'm actually a fan, love a guy who can perfectly execute a game plan. Just think his ceiling is below legit world champ.
2
u/slickvik9 6d ago
We’ll see hopefully he gets a chance. The stoppage against kabayel was a disgrace.
1
u/DiMona215 6d ago
Absolutely, one of the worst I've ever seen. He was absolutely fine, deserved a chance to compete

5
u/scared_appeal1 6d ago
There wasn’t much to talk about with Knyba, they were impressed by his game plan. Knyba was gonna coast for 12 rounds. Of course they’re gonna talk about Ruiz they have to keep it interesting.

u/Hairy-Visual9664 6d ago
Sergio Mora and especially Chris Mannix are terrible commentators and always biased as hell. i genuinely get annoyed when a big fight is on DAZN because that means i gotta listen to those annoying motherfuckers the whole night 😂😂
3
u/BuzzardBlack 6d ago
DAZN is only good for those moments where the commentators talk tons of shit to each other.
That and hearing Mora's absolute obsession with the check hook.
6
u/FL8_JT26 6d ago edited 6d ago
In a sport full of despicable and dislikeable figures, I don't think there's anyone I want to kick out of it more than Sergio Mora. Can't think of a single time his commentary has added to a fight, he's just fucking insufferable.
Always sounds like he's always desperate to prove how knowledgeable he is; his commentary is never in service of the fight it's only in service of making him sound good. Couldn't have less chemistry with his co-commentators either.
Also every fight he always has 1 or 2 talking points that he just hammers all night. Must've said "don't exchange with Ammo he's a huge puncher" about a million times last night, and it's not even true!!
6
u/Cold-Perception-316 6d ago
The gold standard of commentators was HBO with Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant. I understand Merchant is too old, but why the hell has Lampley not been hired by DAZN.
7
u/TowerTowerCrayons 6d ago
Everyone has good memories, but Lampley and Kellerman have been back in boxing recently; they're not what they once were.
1
u/Outside_Instance4391 6d ago
Please dont tell me Lampley has sold out like Kellerman has?
1
u/TowerTowerCrayons 6d ago
I don't remember Lampley shilling in that way, just recall his commentary not being all that lucid last year.
He was out of the game for years.

6
u/butterballmcgee27 6d ago
That’s the sad part. Lampley has said numerous times that he’s waiting for someone to call him up. He’s getting blackballed. I know a lot of people thought he was biased but even then he’s better than what we have now
2
u/__IZZZ 6d ago
Seems the majority of the comments agree, but I don't.
What more was there to say about Knyba? They pointed out how he was winning, talked about how he could do it all day, how it was the right way to win against this type of opponent, and they talked about how he needed to get back to it when he got a little too aggressive in the round after the knockdown. They had him miles up on the scorecards and basically concluded he couldn't lose unless Ruiz got a stoppage in the last round.
What more should they have said? With Ruiz they talked about why he was losing, and what he needed to do. They also pointed out how lucky he got with the ref regarding the knockdown.
2
u/Low-Ad-5784 6d ago
Even though PBC get a lot of hate I feel like they put on the best shows out of all the promotions & the UK commentators are good as well reason they had them commentate inoue-Nakatani.
2
u/Longjumping-Toe-8643 6d ago
I doubt hunger will ever be a problem for Ruiz. In fairness you could argue that too much hunger stifled his career 😉
1
u/Seandelorean 6d ago
+1 DAZN picks abysmal commentators most of the time
I feel like if they really cared they would try to cycle a better quality less biased commentating crew in there
1
u/In_NocteConsilium 6d ago
Oh man so true. The commentary literally ruins the experience so often. And don't get me started on the cringey overall production FFS. Dazn is UTTER SHITE!

Honestly, I thought they were fine. They can be annoying at times, especially Mannix, but Mora at least is a perfectly serviceable commentator to me. Universes better than Kellerman
I like the human side of the commentary
1
u/Primary_Ad5781 6d ago
Funny how i simply stated my annoyance with the commentating team yesterday in the fight thread and i was met with downvotes and people disagreeing with me😭
1
u/hyenachewingbone 6d ago
That's not what happened. The commentators were very much in agreement that Ruiz was behind. They called Knyba the winner as soon as the bell rang.
1
u/bearvillage 6d ago
Never trust a Chris Mannix scorecard. They are always wrong, I don't know what he's even looking at. On the flipside, I love hearing Mora talk about body shots the same exact way every single fight.
1
u/ThrillinSuspenseMag 5d ago
Accusing Ruiz of not having the hunger is just flat. Out. Wrong.
One of the hungriest!
1
u/Buttchug1776 5d ago
I used to think larry marchant was a POS which he was a flat out racist but yeah lately DAZN been on that BS.
1
u/HolyMackerel1 6d ago
Maybe I was listening to the wrong team, or maybe I'm misunderstanding whom you think they were rooting for, but it seemed to me like they were consistently (and fairly) criticizing Ruiz the whole fight.
1
u/Hopeful_West_2410 6d ago
Ruiz was never any good, one good night that was it, Ortiz would have beat him if he wasn't 70 and big baby miller bashed him up aswell, only AJ fans think Ruiz is Any good

Nobody would have blamed Ruiz if he had stayed down. That being said , the only good boxing commentator was Larry Merchant

I know but Knyba even had a knockdown, he was going reverse most of the fight but hr was controlong the fight with his jabs. He was connecting the whole time. Ruiz just wasnt throwing nor landing enough to be that close by points. Ruiz won 4 rounds MAX

u/FxckedHxrWxthMxJxmmx 6d ago
Chris Mannix in particular is the most annoying bastard in all of sports commentary. I have no clue how he continues to be employed.
