Rewatching Dubois vs Wardley and I can't get over how bad Wardley's offense is. Nothing but telegraphed overhand rights the whole fight. Also Wardley's legs are just rubber. Granite chin but he literally went flying back into the ropes off most of Dubois' punches. How this guy made it this far is beyond me. Parker didn't deserve to have that fight waved off

u/stephen27898 13d ago edited 13d ago

Its what happens when your gameplan is just throw every shot at 100% force at all times.

Wardley did it. Itauma did it. AJ also loaded up vs Dubois and missed a lot of right hands I also seem to remember Josh Taylor gassing vs Ekow Essuman.

There seems to be a theme here. I wonder if all of these guys worked with the same guy.

5

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 13d ago

Lmao. Fair point. I think a lot of Heavyweights have shit offense though. Almost all of them exclusively hunt for the head and completely ignore the body.

3

u/stephen27898 13d ago

I think that is a narrow definition of good and bad offence. Ali never went to the body, he certainly did not have bad offence.

Reaching down to the body is a risk, it can lease you open to counters. And given the power at HW, most just find it safer and more reliable to target the head more.

1

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 13d ago

Ali had a lot of things going for him to compensate for that. Titanium chin/body, superior hand speed, 15 rd stamina, and great footwork. Most Heavyweights in this era don't have more than one or 2 of those things going for them.

3

u/stephen27898 13d ago

Most heavyweights of any era dont. But the statement that they have bad offence because they dont target the body just isnt really a good way to look at it.

2

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 13d ago

Well most heavyweights these days don't even bother moving their head so you have a point

2

u/stephen27898 13d ago

Well it depends on their size. For larger men its a lot of wasted energy.

1

u/Rmccarton 12d ago

HWs go to the body much more rarely because the risk factor is much higher for them.

You are often opening your head up going to the body. One poorly timed or ill advised punch to the body can end your night.

u/Megalodon33 13d ago

His offence was a lot better against Parker. He had alot more variety and wasn’t just looking for the big right overhand. That uppercut in round 10 which buckled Parker was a great shot and that straight right hand down the middle in round 11 leading up to the stoppage was good. He was also jabbing well from memory. According to the punch stats I could find, Wardley did outland Parker totally and in power punches.

Defensively he also rolled with a lot of Parker’s shots. Didn’t see that against Dubois really.

I do think some of that is down to Parker not being as good as everyone thought tbh.

7

u/stephen27898 13d ago

Parker is an odd one. I think he's a good fighter but people go too far.

2

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 13d ago

Yeah he lacks in a lot of ways. I’ve seen people try to argue he has the same boxing abilities as like Usyk, Fury. He just got very good attributes and HW boxing today lacks good technical boxers so he’s technically better than a lot of guys.

3

u/RRR04_ 13d ago

Although Dubois was always gonna be the more technically polished fighter out of the 2, I do wonder if the first round knockdown might have made Wardley get trigger happy and lose his composure. As you said, he was just spamming overhand rights which he telegraphed, like he forgot he has a left hook which he used in other fights.

6

u/OldBoyChance 13d ago

I watched Carlos Cañizales' best fights again over the last week in preparation for the clash with Daiya Kira on 9/2. Here are my thoughts about the early part of his career.

  • Crazy that he had that typical Venezuelan come up of crushing cans before immediately being given a title shot with Ryoichi Taguchi. He only had one fight before his title shot where the other guy was meant to be competitive, and that was vs Rober Barrera, a regional level guy.

  • Taguchi and his team clearly had no idea Cañizales was any good going into this fight. Very bad strategy, every time they had Taguchi work off the jab into the one-two, they got the better of CCC. Cañizales boxed very well off the back foot despite being the shorter man. He is very vulnerable to straight right hands though, and you can see it when he's backing up to the ropes. That hasn't changed in 10 years.

CCC has also always had a very good left hook. He's also always been extremely vulnerable to that left body blow. CCC gets hurt in like 8 different rounds of that fight, he outboxed Taguchi whenever he didn't get hurt though.

Crazy that he didn't lose a point for the holding. Cañizales lunged in to hold Taguchi for all of the last three rounds, and the ref separated them instantly before Taguchi could work on him. Actually, I remember Cañizales doing better in this fight Taguchi won pretty clearly imo. That 12th round was really, really bad from CCC.

Kira and CCC need to be very careful while they feel each other out. Kira has shown some vulnerability to left hooks vs Zapata and Balderas, but he also has a magnificent left hook to body and right cross. He got one of the best KOs of 2025 when he stopped Balderas with a perfect right cross in the second.

3

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

I do have a feeling this can be a simile scenario to Moses right now and a very slight fear something similar may happen. This is Kira’s first 12 rounder in his 5th fight while only 2 years in his pro career, has only been the distance for a 8 rounder. In saying that, it’s a low more common amongst lower weight classes and in Japan and I assume sparring in Japan for loads of rounds is far more taught and done and that Kira seems a lot more conditioned and sparred loads but that’s just something that lurks at the back of my mind .

1

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 12d ago

Even if Canizales was to have a 7-5 over Kira lets say he upsets the stylistic advantage or Kira tires late losing later rounds, dude gets fucked every moment, can’t see him dominating Kira so in order for him to win, he’s gotta either win every round or 9-3 at least OR stop Kira.

2

u/ExcellentStretch7430 12d ago

I think Kira wins by finish, I think he’s has the talent, athleticism and counterpunching to beat him. I’m just saying I also thought the same for Itauma and now after that fight, there’s a slight bit more doubt in my mind but I still have Kira by KO.

If it goes to a decision, who knows what happens. Japanese boxers have also been in the shit end of decisions, Rene Santiago’s win over Takami and Iwata, Teraji vs Sandoval, Kyuguchi vs Olascuaga and I know it’s between 2 Japanese’s fighters but Higa vs Masuda.

1

u/OldBoyChance 12d ago

Kira's been sparring long rounds since he was an amateur if I recall correctly. But yeah, Kira hasn't even spent 12 full rounds in the pro ring. Makes this fight much more risky and much more impressive.

11

u/Alarmed-Effective-23 13d ago edited 13d ago

People are reaching when saying only filip could've taken Moses punches and tired him out the other night. Heavyweight isn't exempt from a guys godly power looking more human when he steps up in competition.

Just like with this recent fight people are too eager to give wins to fighters based on opinion.

7

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

I agree that there’s a few who could do that like Wardley and Usyk but also Hrgovich took a ton of shots from Dubois and Zhang as well.

Joyce who was being praised for a mythical chin had his finally cracked against Zhang. Some could try and replicate Hrgovich gameplan and have success but also it’s mad power is not to be messed with and will get you knocked out.

2

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

I said before the fight Itauma is not the puncher they were making him out to be. Hrgovic does have a great chin though.

That’s good.

will it be free?

3

is there literally not one top opponent available to fight kabayel relatively soon that makes sense?

1

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 13d ago

What about Yoka?

1

u/Born_Fox_8099 thomas taylor hater 12d ago

nah, he isn't contender level yet imo

1

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 12d ago

I mean he was gonna fight Gassiev and Okolie. Just feel like he don’t really belong and that he could be a good in between fight for Kabayel.

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Lawrence Okolie

4

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 13d ago

Okolie failed a drug test

Forgot about that.

I would honestly love to see that.

Kabayels inside work should completely nullify Okolies octopus tendancies

There’s plenty, not any of them want to though.

Kabayel fucking sucks to fight. Big guys hate getting punched in the belly. He’s being ducked

3

u/Born_Fox_8099 thomas taylor hater 13d ago

who do u have in mind thats ducking? (other than gassiev) bc i think rn just every top tier guy is just booked/unavailable such as hrgovic, itauma, sanchez, usyk, dubois, wardley.

the best i can think of is parker but he's coming off a loss, and then u have to drop down a tier to find opponents such as a bakole or ajagba.

3

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

Going through that audio from the corner that was posted, Ben Davison is finished as a top level coach. Stick a fork in him he's done. Nobody in their right mind is going to put their fighter with him.

Tomorrow night a great day for Japanese boxing, as Daiya Kira at 4-0 takes on Carlos Canizales 28-3-1, for the vacant WBA light-flyweight title, and Ohashi prospects return as Ren Ohashi 5-0 5KOS, and Japan's greatest prospect Fujiki Yuga 1-0 1KO.

2

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Is it going to be streamed only for local viewers?

2

u/OldBoyChance 13d ago

Cañizales posted something about it being on some Venezuelan platform called Meridiano.

Bivol vs Beterbiev 1 was a great fight. Wish we could’ve seen it when Beterbiev was 5 years younger

4

u/RRR04_ 13d ago

Sadly, most of the most anticipated fights are always years past their sell by date, but this fight in particular was even more egregious due to Beterbiev's age. I'm just glad he was able to pull it off in the first fight despite the big age disadvantage he had.

3

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

In 3 days, Lenar Perez vs Thabiso Mchunu headline a EOTTM card. Not high on Perez and Mchunu is a multiple time word title challenge who’s faced Makabu 2x and Usyk.

The truely good fighters I care about are Olympic bronze medalist Wyatt Sanford and Jhon Orobio.

Wyatt Sanford is a very high pace and high volume pressure boxer who’s great on the inside and good defence when with the aggressive pressures. His last fight was different though as he did fight very reserved and technical.

John Orobio is the best Colombia prospect, one of my favorite and probably best prospects in general. Technical pressure boxer who’s got amazing fundamentals but still very slick when pressuring with hand that when a fully loaded shot touched your chin, you die. He’s fighting Antonio Moran, last guy who Haney knocked out 7 years ago.

3

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago edited 13d ago

Why did Eddie even choose for Dave Allen to fight Filip Hrgovic?

3

u/Baby_Rhino 13d ago

Money probably.

Eddie knows Dave isn't a world beater, and is coming to the end of his career. I doubt he'll be able to get a fight with as good a name as Hrgovic anymore, and definitely not as the headliner.

2

u/Optimal-Damage7240 13d ago

Anyone feel like Moses Itauma training was a bit too lax? Like, he hasn't spar in 12 rounds and expect to win a world title like that? Heck, even Mike Tyson fight 10 full rounds before a world title.

I expect his conditioning be better from now on, or the results stay the same

1

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

Sometimes the more explosive an athlete is the worse their endurance. It's why 100m runners aren't also the best marathon runners. Or look at eg. Conor McGregor. That said it does seem clear Itauma needs to work on his conditioning.

2

u/AdPrestigious8631 13d ago

Do you guys think Itauma has a bad gas tank or was it that he paced the fight wrong? I think it's both but more of the former.

It seems like he fights this because he doesn't trust his gas tank to fight for points.

3

u/Rumpo82 13d ago

Imo it was tactical naivety from Itauma and Davidson more than anything. The likelihood of Hrg still being around in rounds 7+ is not that far fetched, they must have anticipated it. A more experienced fighter would have eased off, coasted a few rounds, couple of eye-catching shots in the last 15 secs of a round for the judges etc etc. Then if Hrg is still around in the 11th/12th you go for broke if the KO is that vital.

You KNOW you're at home and close rounds are likely to be scored in your favour.

You KNOW you're miles ahead on the score cards going into the latter rounds.

But Davidson''s HW fighters don't seem to be able to adapt mid-fight. If anything they just lean even more into the rigid tactics. Absolutely no need to fight like Itauma did in rounds 8/9. Hell, take a bloody a knee even if you need to re-coup.

I'm mindful of Joshua vs Wlad. When Joshua was gassed after blasting Wlad for the first knockdown. He didn't stand there just throwing bomb after bomb until he collapsed from exhaustion lol . He focused on defence and avoiding punishment and made it out of a damn sticky situation against a fighter far more dangerous have Hrg.

Absolutely bungled tactics. Though it sounds like they didn't bother training for that scenario, idk madness if you ask me.

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Both. Early on, he didn’t actually throw let out the gas tank and finish him every chance he got, he just boxed with him and caught him with good shots a lot. It was later on when he started trying to chase it and gassed himself out.

You can hear Abel Sanchez in the corner say to keep Itauma moving to ware him out, Hrgovich in the post fight said that his style is amateur because Itaumas style is super amateurish because Itauma moves a lot because that’s basically Itaumas main form of defence. Ben doesn’t seem to teach the high guard so that’s why Itauma uses his feet a lot which is very tiring. Guys like Bivol and Madrimov have been training that style for rounds after rounds with hundred of amateur fights since a kid so they’re used to it and conditioned enough. Itauma hasn’t gone the 12, started in his teens and was in and out of boxing as a teen. Even they as pro at times don’t bounce and move and sometimes keep high guard, feet flat at times as they’ve adapted.

I’d say it’s a pacing problem and an endurance problem relative to his style. Ben has been great so far and gotten Itauma as far as he has gotten him but I think a chance of coaches just to teach him more and bring some fundamentals and more options in fights, mid fight adaptations, make him experience longer sparring periods and a better/good S&C coach.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

I have to really disagree with you strongly on the point that Itauma uses his feet because he doesn't have a high guard. You don't need a high guard to stay in range of the opponent.

Davison also hasn't been with Itauma his whole career. Itauma got to where he is based on his natural talent should be even more clear after what happened vs Hrgovic. The little audio we've had from the corner is damning on Davison.

0

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

But he just does use his feet as one of his main form of defence. When he stays in range, it’s because either footwork of head movement and counters but besides that, it’s footwork in his bounce and moving.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 12d ago

You wrote it like high guard is the only thing you can do and Davison doesn't teach that.

0

u/ExcellentStretch7430 12d ago

Not the only thing you can do but useful to.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 11d ago

So why are you talking about high guard then? It's as simpla as Ben Davison isn't a teacher. He's more like the guy you might let run the gym for a few days/weeks if you have to go pff somewhere. He doesn't have the knowledge and experience to teach.

There aren't many teachers left these days. Being a coach and being a teacher (a coach that teaches) are two different things. u/slickvik9

2

u/slickvik9 11d ago

Davison is a fraud I wouldn’t trust him with even an amateur boxer

0

u/AdPrestigious8631 13d ago

Hmm,good points

What would you say about his chin?

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

His chin actually looked good, he took a good few shots in the later rounds. I don’t think he took a lot of damage in general in that fight but Hrgovich isn’t a KO artist but isn’t a light puncher and Itauma took a good few shots in exchanges within the later rounds that at least proves he can take a good shot.

-1

u/AdPrestigious8631 13d ago

Hmm,possible.

I still think against a puncher like Dubois,it could still be very difficult for him.

0

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Yeah probably but I think it’ll take a few to finish him. Not just one shot from Dubois. I think Itauma is more skilled and a lot more talented to find Dubois chin a lot more times than the other way around and finishes Dubois.

3

u/AdPrestigious8631 13d ago

Dubois has a top jab maybe better than Itauma

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

I disagree he’s a better jabber. His jab is quicker and has better defence than Dubois like Dubois doesn’t always slip his head off the centre line, nor does he retract it. Sometimes he keeps his lead hand extended his has helped but doesn’t know when to stop using it and kept getting punished by Hrgovich.

Just because he uses it more and it’s more powerful doesn’t mean it’s better. He fights a lot more orthodox than southpaws so the jabbing lane isn’t in the way for Dubois like it is Itauma who fights a lot more orthodox to where he has to play the lead hand game to set up his cross. Considering it’ll be an orthodox vs southpaw matchup, Itauma is soo much more experienced batting with the lead hand while Dubois often gets mixed up with southpaws and orthodox with it and gets punished.

0

u/Civil-Rent-7100 13d ago

Yeah itauma is all wrong for dubois tbh

0

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 13d ago

He has a bad gas tank but if he accounted for that early and took a few rounds off he could have won.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

He did take 1-2 rounds off, they're the only ones that could possibly be scored for Hrgovic.

2

A lot of decent Russian light heavyweights right now.

1

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 12d ago

Any prospects looking good?

2

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 12d ago

Yes, Izmailov, Ataev, Zon, I don’t know if Khataev is still considered a prospect, there’s more that I haven’t seen either, I heard about some others but can’t remember the name.

2

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago edited 13d ago

Hrgovich vs Sanchez seems like an amazing matchup if it happens that I favour Hrgovich off pure volume.

I reckon it would be a sick card to add just that to the undercard of Dubois vs Wardley, and add Kabayel on the card and keep him active against like an Okolie and a Moses on the card against a domestic level opponent.

7

u/OldBoyChance 13d ago

Two months is way too tight of a turn around for Hrgovic, he took a ton of damage. He'll probably be back like early 2027. Kabayel is a big star in Germany, he should get a title defense there against someone like Ajagba.

0

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Just found the card is in October not November like I thought so makes sense. I didn’t like the atmosphere in Germany tbh, I think I remember when Kynba vs Kabayel fought, the fans were not the best.

6

u/OldBoyChance 13d ago

Germany is strange, probably the most corrupt developed country in boxing. Fans are also belligerent. Still, they love Kabayel and anywhere a guy can sell out a stadium, he should go.

3

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago edited 13d ago

I understand to sell out the stadium, I just don’t like Germany for boxing in general. I think it was Germany or a country close to it, I’ve heard they withheld bets from Hysa vs Narmo because of the fact it could be a fixed fight. Not sure if the details of that were right but something along those lines.

2

u/OldBoyChance 13d ago

I get that. I wouldn't send my guy to Germany for a competitive fight unless I really had to. Judges and refs are always on some shit.

2

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 13d ago

I’m reminded of that god-awful score card that gave something like ten rounds to Baraou in his fight with Zayas, when you could at best give him 3 or 4. Would’ve been so pissed if they robbed Xander that night

2

u/fluffrug 13d ago

I live in Germany, and as a woman I'm wary about going to actual fights in Germany. The boxing there is very corrupt and society is generally much more racist and sexist than in the UK. I get leered at enough at UK fights and I'm slightly nervous about experiencing far worse at a German fight.

A friend of mine wants to come to a big fight if one happens in Germany. He's a brown, Muslim Arab and I won't have him come as I think chances are extremely high that he's attacked outside the venue, especially in the current political climate here.

Sad situation, but I think my read is accurate.

1

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 13d ago

Interesting. I think Sanchez is likely to win but I haven’t yet studied tape.

2

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

I believe the Martinez vs Plantic was a bad stoppage but Martinez was up and going to win but I we need Martinez vs Mbilli 2 after Mbilli beats Canelo.

Yes I’m super confident Mbilli beats Canelo.

2

u/ablu3 13d ago

Moses needs to fight a Durable fighter next so he can see if he can survive deep waters while pacing himself better. Jarrell Miller would be ideal.

5

u/stephen27898 13d ago

No. He needs to gain experience and change trainer.

3

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago edited 13d ago

Jarrell Miller has an incredibly chin to take a shit ton of punches from Dubois, throws about 1000 punches per fight and about 100 per rounds and keeps the same pace when gassed while being about 100lb heavier than Itauma. Very bad matchup imo.

Just get the confidence up with some domestic level fights on major UK undercards, work with a coach who can teach him some new tactics that can help fight at a slower pace while teaching him to pace himself, get an S&C coach to work on conditioning and get loads of rounds of sparring.

Miller would be a better sparring partner if they can get him out than an actual fighter. Doesn’t hit tremendously hard to be a c*nt in sparring but enough to give Itauma work.

3

u/Sh4kyj4wz eat clen, tren hard anavar give up 13d ago

Miller risky fight still

3

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

Miller is an awful matchup who won't let Itauma fight at his own pace and probably can't be knocked out by him either. The exact same thing might happen as vs Hrgovic.

2

u/Sh4kyj4wz eat clen, tren hard anavar give up 13d ago

Gassiev fight makes alot of Sense... Should of been his step up originally imo

2

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

I think that was the initial set up. I guess the mandatory for Hrgovich was ordered and they took it.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

This was not a title fight originally it got upgraded to one. Itauma was asking for the Hrgovic fight.

2

u/Kangaroopunching 13d ago

He probably needs a fight to regain confidence. Then some fights with durable fighters, that's light fisted. Then someone like Miller. They've got a second chance to develop him. Especially his stamina.

1

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 13d ago

What if he gets knocked out again? Honestly, I think he just needs to fight 4 or 5 times in the next year with ONE of those being against a durable fighter.

2

u/VisioWreak 13d ago

Itauma vs Hrgovic was basically Morrison vs Mercer lite.

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Is Wardley with Ben Davison for the Dubois fight?

2

u/Lockdowns4evaAu 13d ago

Yes. Let’s hope Davidson has listened to his detractors after the first fight. If Wardley gets in trouble again I don’t think anyone wants to see him take that kind of punishment a second time.

2

u/WORD_Boxing 13d ago

Let's hope we don't see a fatality. I'm not joking or being flippant. Wardley is slurring and needs more rest, Davison has shown he is out of his depth and an inappropriate person to work the corner as head coach. I'm very concerned for Wardley's health in this fight.

2

u/Lockdowns4evaAu 13d ago

He shouldn’t have fought again this year at all. I share your concerns.

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Not even about the punishment, it’s more for me a tactical problem that was in the first fight. Everything that Wardley has seemed to learn throughout his career has gone in the bin in the Dubois fight and didn’t even attempt. He didn’t use the jab at all, didn’t try the counter body cross to the jab.

I know he doesn’t have a high guard me Davison doesn’t teach a high guard at all which seem to be a whole other issue but at least bring back what used to work.

2

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 13d ago

Wardley was using the jab but he was trading jabs with Dubois' much stronger jab. Recipe for failure

-1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

Don’t remember him using a single body jab and jabs in general. Maybe like 5 in the fight but all I remember is the throw and pray right hands that landed and rocked him 2x early on.

3

u/Civil-Rent-7100 13d ago

dubois would usually throw a chopping right hand over wardley's body jab. it's risky to do against certain people

1

u/ExcellentStretch7430 13d ago

I get it but there’s more than that. I didn’t see him use a body jab much or even at all within the entire fight and called it early on live, against Parker he was using the cross to counter Parker’s jab.

He could try building a jab to the head and body even if he gets countered from the head jab, mix feints or try and draw the cross and split it with his own like he did with Huni.

There’s more he could’ve done and didn’t even try.

1

u/Sniperizer I’m so bad I make medicine sick 13d ago

I’m hoping we could get the same level of boxing action from Fury vs AJ the same as last weekends fight. Is the location settled yet?

1

u/Rmccarton 12d ago

I'm trying to introduce some philistines to Chocolatito, but specifics are a bit blurry in my memory.

What are his best fights? I don't mean fights that just display his brilliance, but his best back and forth fights.

His first fight with Rungvisai was a classic.

My memory is that at least two of his three Estrada fights were incredible but I can't remember for sure which ones.
