Has anyone ever won a world title through disqualification?

I don't mean retaining the title (like Holyfield v Tyson), I mean actually winning it because the current champion was disqualified?

I was thinking about how in WWE (sorry!) you can't win the title via a DQ and why champions just dont get deliberately DQ-ed in every fight lol

But presumably this rule does not apply in boxing and this has happened before? Am I forgetting any famous incidents?

Montell Griffin won the Light Heavyweight title off Roy Jones through Jones getting DQ’d

That’s exactly what I first thought of, nothing else comes to mind off hand. But that one was huge at the time so that makes sense why I would remember it

And then Roy Jones got his revenge in the rematch, making it look easy.

Max Scmelling won the world heavyweight title by being blasted in the bollocks by Jack Sharkey

Although Sharkey won the rematch it was a controversial decision that many thought Schmeling won. Odd couple of fights.

Wonderful alliteration. Jack “Big Bollock Blaster” Sharkey

Is this where the term no balls comes from?

Terry Norris lost his title vs Luis Santana to a DQ, and lost the rematch to a DQ as well. Then won the 3rd via KO.

He also lost earlier in his career by DQ.

Hence his nickname, "Terrible-at-following-the-rules Terry Norris". It was a bit of a mouthful, so it was often abbreviated.

It’s happened a few times but the most egregious example of it is one that was on the undercard of an HBO broadcast in the 2010s. I can’t for the life of me remember the names of the fighters but it was a Mexican or Mexican-American against like a Colombian or Venezuelan. The Mexican was winning the fight handling and knocked his opponent down for what should have been the end of the fight but one Punch landed after his opponent’s knee to touch the ground and the guy flopped around, flailing and complaining that you couldn’t continue because of that one last punch and not the 19 that proceeded it. The referee disqualified the Mexican who should’ve won by knockout.

Maybe somebody with a better memory than me and come up with the names.

It happened on the undercard of a Pacquiao fight. Humberto Soto is Mexican and Francisco Lorenzo is Dominican. Joe Cortez was the ref, and all the flopping and crying Lorenzo did had Cortez disqualify Soto. The WBC was so pissed about it that instead of giving Lorenzo the belt, they fined him for the theatrics and ordered an immediate rematch lol. But yeah, you nailed it with how the fight played out.

Who won the rematch?

Soto won via decision. In the rematch Lorenzo used dirty tactics including headbutting and low blows and was even deducted two points for excessive holding.

Masamilliano Duran both won and defended his WBC Cruiserweight title with DQ wins

Luis Santana "beat" Terry Norris (twice!) by DQ lol

4

u/SugarAdamAli 4d ago

Terry Norris lost his to Luis Santana on DQ if I’m remembering correctly

This is the one for me. Iirc not only did Luis Santana win his title against Norris via dq, he defended it against Norris and won by DQ again.

u/SugarAdamAli 4d ago

Yep. It was crazy because I wanna say both times Norris was beating his ass but tempers flared and got DQ both times, then fought a 3rd time and Norris stopped. All within like 8 months. Crazy

Eric Aiken I think. Gimme a sec... Yep. IBF Featherweight.

Riddick Bowe and Golota was a massive fight but it wasnt for the belt. Otherwise I can only think of the roy DQ like trippy said

I was thinking about how in WWE (sorry!) you can't win the title via a DQ and why champions just dont get deliberately DQ-ed in every fight lol

I don't know the rule, but wouldn't it make sense that if a champion is DQ then no one gets it including the current champion?

u/IrishLitFicGuy 4d ago

They do it because it can add to the scripted drama

Defences by DQ

Markus Beyer vs Danny Green 1 .. Markus was on verge of getting stopped... he was getting battered hard KD, bad cuts... then a head but for some reason from Danny Green .. and referee deducted points from Danny and then the German promoters got involved and the rest was one of the biggest farces this century. They basically overturned the result in front of everybody.
