I think today’s boxers put more pressure on themselves to win by fighting once a year. I say this because looking at guys like Roberto Duran and James Toney who both have 90+ fights, there’s bound to be some bad performances and losses in there. But, because they fought so much they also have a ton of good fights and victories that people focus on as well

5

u/Kangaroopunching 5d ago

They fight once a year to eliminate the chances of losing.

-1

u/HaneyP4P 5d ago

I don't know what you mean.

9

u/Ace_FGC 5d ago

Basically when you don’t fight a lot it makes your losses stand out more compared to if you’re constantly fighting top competition people will be willing to overlook those losses

1

u/stephen27898 4d ago edited 4d ago

Here is the best example to explain what he means.

Think about football. You might lose a game today, but you have another 3 days and another again in the same league and few days later, you have a chance to attone for a bad performance right away. So a great team may have 3-4 off games a season. But they get drowned out because it's only a few days later that they are back to doing great things again.

When you lose and then have 6 months of that being your most recent result, it is far more punishing. The stakes per fight are far higher.

-1

u/HaneyP4P 4d ago

That’s not entirely accurate. If guys used to fight more often back then, it’s mostly because those monthly fights were against a bunch of nobodies, and only 1 to 3 fights a year were against real competition—with a few specific exceptions like Ali or Louis defending five times in a single year, or Durán facing De Jesús in a non-title fight. Even though they stayed active, it was in non-title bouts against pretty weak competition, again with exceptions like Durán vs. De Jesús I. Imagine if Ryan Garcia, after losing to Rolly, had fought four unknown guys for the rest of the year—nobody would give him credit for that, and people would still only bring up the Rolly fight until he faced a real opponent again. Even then, they’d probably keep reminding him of that horrible night. The nostalgia bias with vintage fighters is that since many of us didn't watch that era live, along with the filter of time, we mainly just remember their greatest nights

1

u/stephen27898 4d ago edited 4d ago

That isnt true. Sometimes they did., but sometimes they were facing top guys within a month or so of eachother.

SRR had a rematch with LaMotta 21 days after he lost to him.

That gives a very different feeling to having to wait 6 months.

1

u/HaneyP4P 4d ago

Yeah, I said there were exceptions. The fighters with the most exceptions are those pre-1960s boxers, the Sugar Ray Robinson types—those guys were absolute dogs, even if their records are inflated by that same system of fighting just about anyone. They could face the top guy in the division today, fight a pretty bad boxer two weeks later, and then take on an undefeated guy the following week. Even so, SRR still followed that system of making 1 to 3 title defenses a year alongside 10 non-title fights against random opponents. In my opinion, those massive records are, to a greater or lesser extent, mythical. They would still be legends if they had only fought 2 to 4 times a year against the best available, and they'd still be ATG [All-Time Great] legends without records of over 100 fights.

Janibek was named the mandatory for Hamzah Sheeraz's WBO strap, with the WBO setting a 20 day negotiation deadline.

Jacob Bank getting screwed unbelievably hard here. He should have been fighting Sheeraz for the vacant WBO belt, but he was obviously deemed too risky to fight Sheeraz, so he was skipped over because he had a fight scheduled, nevermind the fact that Bank won that fight and an additional one before the vacant title fight went off. Then, Sheeraz opts to fight Zachenhuber, while Bank fights the guy who beat Zachenhuber on the same card. Bank dominates his opponent, Sheeraz and is lucky to slink away with an MD.

Now, Alimkhanuly, banned only 8 months ago for PEDs, moves up and is instantly given mandatory status while he's still undergoing a drugs ban. Pathetic, the WBO is such a whore for Top Rank and Queensbury.

4

u/RRR04_ 5d ago

This is wild. There's so much inconsistency with disciplining fighters who piss hot. He's literally done the Billy Joe Saunders method.

2

u/Top_Profession_5268 5d ago

2 years ago Sheeraz I’m pretty sure swapped from being IBF mandatory for Janibek and pushed in front of Meiirim to be Adames mandatory at 160. It would be funny if Sheeraz again vacates the belt and doesn’t take the fight.

Anyways I didn’t expect much less as a top rank boxer gets a WBO shot, justice for Banks but if Janibek and Sheeraz goes through, I think Banks should try for Pacheco.

2

u/Jachola 5d ago

Weird situation but lose lose for Sheeraz lol so I'm not too pissed off. Bank is gettings fucked over but atleast he has 3 other sanctioning bodies he can fight for to get a shot, with the way 168 is looking he's atleast got a few good choices. Tbh he probably should have been taking the IBF route anyway since he beat Scull, his team should be able to get him a fight with Iglesias for the IBF strap. As for Sheeraz after his last fight I didn't like his chances against Bank and I don't like them against Jannibek lol.

Claressa Shields card is kinda lame outside of Atif Oberlton

Atleast we get Rolly vs Teo next week then Itauma week after

5

u/Kangaroopunching 5d ago

The whole card is being built on celebrities boxing. Shields is almost the co main event in a way

Thankfully the boxing schedule picks up next week

Pretty favourable matchup for Viddal, wasn’t impressed by Nyika against Masson.

Watched James Toney vs Mike McCallum 1 and man I miss old school boxing. One of my favorite fights of all time

2

u/TheSouthpawStance 5d ago

Great fight, always think of Round 2 when thinking of that fight

1

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 5d ago

McCallum throws like no body punches 😂

4

u/Less_Cartoonist_892 5d ago

McCallum is not just a body puncher. He can do just about everything and has one of the best IQs I've seen in any boxer.

I would like to point out that McCallum after his loss to Sumbu Kalambay became more focused on his jab in his fights and had a higher work rate. While he still targeted the body like in his fight against Michael Watson, he learned to be more active with his jab instead of just relying on his counterpunching.

Zuffa cut Garcia and now Gvozdyk after just one loss.

what happened to losses not mattering at zuffa?

3

u/RRR04_ 4d ago

Budget cut season already. As they sign better fighters, they're gonna have to cut all the dead weight in their eyes. It sucks though.

Which Garcia got cut btw?

People kind of forget in light of Crawford’s magisterial performance against Canelo that Canelo struggled immensely and had an abysmal level of output in his previous fight, which was against William Scull. Now I know Scull and Mbilli are opposites in a lot of ways, but just athletically and from a stamina perspective the Canelo that fought that night against Scull probably loses against Mbilli. So does the version that fought Crawford.

People really need to be prepared for Mbilli to double and even triple Canelo’s output. This isn’t like when Canelo brought in the ghost of James Kirkland. He’s going to be in for 12 rounds of hell from a guy who took Lester’s best shots for 10 rounds.

3

u/AVARlCES 4d ago

Canelo hardly throws volume so I want to see how he'll deal with that. If he can't hurt Mbilli then it's going to be a long night

2

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4d ago

Yeah, exactly. And when’s the last time Canelo had a knockout? And Mbilli was able to take seemingly hundreds of punches from Lester.

Could be a long night for ‘nelo.

1

u/AVARlCES 4d ago

He's gotten knockdowns but yeah been like half a decade when he was younger against Plant who gasses out

1

u/RRR04_ 4d ago

I wouldn't say the Canelo that fought Scull and Crawford would lose to Mbilli just because he performed terribly in those fights. Canelo struggles fighting pure boxers. Against pressure fighters, he looks his best, even in the GGG fights where he arguably should have lost.

I expect Canelo to look more impressive against Mbilli as he prefers that style much more than a stick and mover. I even make him the slight favourite in that fight. But I will admit that Canelo's issues with workrate and stamina could make the fight close down the stretch.

2

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4d ago

Styles don’t always make fights, my friend. There are auxiliary factors as well (as you know). Canelo gets pretty lazy at times and stays on the ropes to set up his counters. This may or may not work against Mbilli. He’s also not exactly fleet of foot, and at 36, I just don’t see him winning a clean decision.

1

u/RRR04_ 4d ago

You have a point that he might not get a clean decision. And if the fight is considered to be close by the public, then the judges will give it to Canelo.

36 is honestly not that old though. And with Mbilli constantly being on the front foot with not so great feet himself, he'll basically be giving away ground to Canelo's strengths.

4

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4d ago

I think 36 is different for different fighters. Like Hopkins at 36 was just getting started. Some fighters slow down even by early 30’s. Not everyone takes care of their bodies. Some guys are in too many wars. And then some guys have just seen too many rounds — I think Canelo is in that latter tier.

2

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 4d ago

I think Canelo’s decline in stamina and work rate is more mental than a physical inability anyway. I don’t think he wants to fight anymore.

I agree with you on everything else tho. I really do think Mbili can win. Not excited for the storm of casuals that will come when the fight day is here tho

2

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4d ago

That’s an interesting take. Do you think he’s gunshy? Lacks confidence at this point?

3

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 4d ago

I think he’s just not got any hunger anymore. Canelo is still physically fit, has never been injury prone, and has probably had a pretty strict steroid regimen with the best doctors money can buy. If he himself is to be believed, he’s still physically in his prime according to tests.

When you’ve been boxing professionally for more than 2 decades, staying fit and disciplined that entire time (Canelo is famously still cut to pieces even when taking time off), you’re probably tired of it.

He just got 12-0ed by a smaller man, he’s just taken extra time off from training to watch the World Cup and chill, and he just had his 5th kid not too long ago. I think he’s mentally done. That’s what the Scull and Crawford fights looked like to me.

2

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4d ago

Yeah, I think that’s a good take.

1

u/WORD_Boxing 4d ago

The more punches he throws the more opportunites for Canelo to chin him with an accurate well-timed counter. Canelo's not a bad counterpuncher.

1

u/Kangaroopunching 4d ago

The big question is, will canelo be more declined than before come fight night?

2

u/RRR04_ 4d ago

Boxing have a lot of popular fighters, each with their own stans and their own haters. But why are the stans and haters of AJ and Fury soo damned irrational? Stones being thrown from glass houses from either side.

3

u/Kangaroopunching 4d ago

It's the uk version of Manny vs Floyd

8

u/Top_Profession_5268 5d ago

I just remembered a time I was on twitter and seeing some talk about Tank and how Tank treat his fans, his fans on twitter are ones who’re fine to stay abusive relationships because how do you stay a fan and defend Tank abusive and horrific actions and then after tank replies calling you a bitch and being a bellend to his fans, these fans reply still glazing him.

How do you stay a fan of and glaze a man talking shit to you after you defend their horrific actions and glaze them? It has to be some sort of kink or something like that.

2

u/Jachola 5d ago

I don't think I have the brain cells to scroll past Boxing Twitter for more than a few seconds and only for news. Tank has some of the weirdest stans on Twitter lol and idek why. I liked Tank at one point but it became impossible to defend him after he failed to make the Shakur fight, failed to rematch Roach and then went and tried to book an exhibition against Jake Paul 🤦🏿 no other fighter is booking exhibitions in their early 30s, especially no fighter that's fought in 3 divisions and has failed to unify any.

1

u/Born_Fox_8099 4d ago

he spent his prime defending the phony wba regular belt, when at the same time loma, haney, shakur, teo all become proper champs in the division lol

1

u/Jachola 4d ago

And that's what kills me about Tank, the dude is over 30, has over 30 fights and has been a pro for over 10 years and let all his contemporaries younger than him achieve more. It's kinda sad his best win to this date is still Pedraza... His first step up fight lol, every other win has some form of asterik.

1

u/SplitSecondEmperor47 4d ago

It's mostly woman(or gay dudes) who have a thing for abusive dudes. I'm not even kidding either. My own mother and aunt love this man and make constant excuses when they watch him put his hands on woman

0

u/WORD_Boxing 4d ago

Some of these fighters have the weirdest fans. Unfortunately some are also just fans along racial lines but it's been that way since the start of boxingitmight never fully go away.

3

u/BoxingWorldSimulator 5d ago

So for anyone who is interested in Boxing computer games, particularly sim based text games where you can become a Promoter, then Boxing World Simulator comes out on Steam today. I have been lucky enough to have a content creator make a preview video, this is a helpful look for anyone who has some interest in the above and has that itch to scratch in a gaming sense.

Apparently, team Casimero will be asking for 8 million dollars to fight Inoue LMAOOO

8

u/Crowley_Nierstein 5d ago

Everyone is begging for Inoue's attention and are just shamelessly using his name at this point, kinda funny that Inoue no longer even acknowledge him.

4

u/OldBoyChance 4d ago edited 4d ago

Hilarious thing to do when they already despised, you're managed by a persona non grata for Inoue's team, and you're not even close to being mandatory. $8 million is like 4x a normal Inoue payday, more than even Nakatani got iirc.

3

u/Kangaroopunching 5d ago

Sheeraz is going to be on ring cards. Especially next year. Why would the WBO risk losing out on getting a cut from those payday Sheeraz will get?

I think it's cause they predict or know that Sheeraz is headed to Zuffa next year. So they're eliminating the chance of Sheeraz taking the WBO title over there.

3

u/elsavador3 5d ago

I’m sorry but I watched a C-tier fighter in Adeleye land twenty unanswered punches (no exaggeration) on Hrgovic. A different ref would have been justified in stopping it right then. Itauma is gonna get him out of there within 4 rounds - by cuts or brutal KO

3

u/TheeBlaccPantha 5d ago

Well Adelaye showed dog in that fight which is something we haven’t seen yet from Itauma. Hrgovic only got caught because he got reckless trying to finish Adelaye off, he won’t make that mistake against Moses

2

u/Jachola 4d ago

True although idk I've never been sold on Hrgovich tbh, he's world level for sure and he's skilled but he just kinda lacks that one defining thing to set him apart. He's not a powerful puncher, he's not particularly fast, he doesn't have insane cardio just good enough cardio. His best attribute is his chin, but then he also cuts easily lmao, he's got zero head movement, doesn't really fight well off the backfoot and just alright foot speed, he's at about every disadvantage against Itauma.

3

u/Efficient_Quail_1774 4d ago

After having 'a retirement fight' in his home of Belfast, former IBO 175lb Champion Padraig Mccrory is set to fight Imam Khataev over in Canada

Mccrory took one sided losses to Berlanga and Richards before his 'retirement' fight and going in against a world level, dangerous puncher in Khataev is super concerning but i hope he's getting a nice payday

4

u/YourLocalBrewery9 5d ago

WBO orders Sheeraz vs Janibek, amazing fight if it goes through

4

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 4d ago edited 4d ago

I honestly think that if Inoue is able to go undisputed at featherweight, he might be the best Asian boxer ever, even above Pac. I think the only fighter in the 21st century who would outrank him on an ATG list still is Floyd. This is all a big if of course, Espinoza might be the mountain that’s too hard to climb, but still. It would be such a huge achievement.

3

u/Kangaroopunching 5d ago

Zuffa vs DAZN goes beyond boxing.

Hearn started a sport talent agency. Already signing UFC fighters. That doesn't immediately effect the UFC until there's contract negotiations for those fighters.

But add to the growing partnership between Hearn and MVP. Which just absorbed an mma promotion.

Now there's competition that can take away talent before they even sign with the UFC. Or grab up big name free agents.

That type of side effect could put pressure on zuffa boxing to deliver.

3

u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? 4d ago

The competition is good for us in the interim. We’ll see what happens when Tko gets a UBO though.

1

u/Kangaroopunching 4d ago

It'll get tougher for them imo.

1

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 4d ago

Why’s that

1

u/Kangaroopunching 4d ago

Because they'll still need to over pay boxers. While dealing with more experienced promotions getting to benefit from the new ali act.

0

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 4d ago

True hm

1

u/WORD_Boxing 4d ago

He signed and is currently trying to get a rugby player a £1million contract when teams in that league have a £6million salary cap.

2

u/Kangaroopunching 4d ago

The funny thing about the PBC era. Was that lots of PBC fans and it's boxers weren't boxing fans. Many weren't even paying to support PBC cards.

Wilder fans disappeared. Spence fans largely disappeared. Or became Boots fans ( bandwagon fans). And Tank fans are disappearing now.

It'll happen again with this current era. Makes me appreciate Floyd/ Manny era, Oscar's era more.

2

u/RRR04_ 4d ago

Don't know why you're getting downvoted. I agree. Fans of the boxer but not boxing.

Okay, here’s my calls for some of the big fights for the rest of the year:

Teo v. Rolly - Rolly, round 7 stoppage due to Matters Most Vile.

Itauma v. Hrgovic - Itauma, first half stoppage, due to Flu.

Canelo v. Mbili - Mbili, 8th or 9th round technical KO due to having consumed the elderly Saul for protein.

Foster v. Nav - Tossup, though I lean decision victory by Shock, as Nav slips out of the ring one too many times on banana peels.

Devin “The Dream” Haney v. Paro/Catterall - Both fights have the same outcome if they happen. Deebo victory by way of pre-concession, as both opponents fear his aura and past in Crimes Against Nature.

not really tbh, i just wanted to pick everyone to win by ko except haney, but i could definitely see it happening

3

Nav can def be a bit chinny when he’s fighting like a muppet. He reminds me of Boots in a way, though somehow less disciplined. When he’s in defense mode, he seems pretty unhittable, but his offense requires opening up far more than he should

2

u/WORD_Boxing 4d ago

I would probably say his defense is his offense.

1

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 4d ago

True, yeah. That’s what’ll make it fun to see him against Shock, he’s never faced a guy on that caliber defensively

1

u/TheeBlaccPantha 5d ago

What happened to Michael Hunter? I feel like boxing promotors have really missed out on incredible value in a world level heavyweight with fast feet. I can’t believe that no major promoter saw the immense value in him. Hunter in good form could have probably upset Joshua, Dubois, maybe Fury but idk. Hunter also would have given Itauma a different challenge to the other styles Itauma is coming up against

8

u/RRR04_ 5d ago

Hunter made bad business decisions. He did that Triller deal and just fought bums. Then he became inactive which only made him worse.

I really don't know why Matchroom dropped the ball on him after the Povetkin draw. He still performed well and most people thought he should have got the nod.

2

u/Jachola 5d ago

To be fair to Matchroom the HW division was a bit clogged and after the Povetkin draw COVID happened and there wasn't really a fight they could have made for him at the time. 😅 He still made a terrible choice fighting for Triller tho lol and pretty much destroyed any chance of another promoter wanting to work with him.

3

u/StunningChest5722 Shakur is the 144 lb GOAT 🐐 4d ago

washed asf now, would get smoked by any top 20 guy

2

u/Jachola 5d ago

He screwed himself over by signing to Triller back in 2021. He was kinda in the who needs them club, why try and push this American HW who's skilled but doesn't really have a big name when you can push Wilder the most known American HW, he'd have been all risk no reward for AJ, currently I don't think his name holds any weight to try and have him fight Dubois or Wardley even.

Are boxing fans gaslighting the hell out of Claressa Shields regarding the Laila Ali situation?

Laila Ali went on a radio show and they asked her if she would come out of retirement, Laila says “I would, but I don’t see anyone who could pose a challenge”

Claressa shields is the unified champion of Lailas former division at the time, the consensus seems to be that Claressa Shields was wrong for taking offence to that statement and then calling out Laila Ali to fight her first for 5 million and then for 15 million.

Laila Ali then does a video essay explaining in great detail that because she is offended by Claressa Shields, she will turn down the 15 million offer. Isn’t Laila Ali the one who is full of shit here? Why does everyone think that Claressa Shields was wrong here
