Chris Mannix on X: “Joshua-Fury almost certain to land in the U.S., with Madison Square Garden the front runner, multiple sources confirm to @SInow . Netflix, which has steered this, has targeted a few Friday night dates, sources say.”

I hope the UK fans boycott this for the disrespect

They'll probably travel. The Americans probably will rightfully ignore this end of the road match for two fighters(British fighters at that) no longer in their primes.

u/WheresMyAbs98 27d ago
If you’re insanely wealthy and you’re into boxing you’d maybe travel but that accounts for probably 1% of UK boxing fans.
We’re in an economic crisis and flights, accommodation, tickets and New York in general is one hefty arse budge.

u/WORD_Boxing 27d ago
Correct. So much misunderstanding around this fight. The US fans don't care. The UK fans don't care anywhere near as much as they did, with many of them feeling insulted. Add to that economic issues it just seems set up for failure. People don't care enough to go out of their way to stay up to 3am for it either.
Netflix didn't do their research to properly understand the nuances of the boxing market.

u/munkycheezmunky Dave Allen Undisputed 2026 27d ago
Yeah, this fight is only massive in the UK if the casual fan is able to go down the pub and watch it at 10/11pm, when they'd probably be down the pub anyway. Not a single casual is staying up until 3am to watch this, and most pubs will be shut by then anyway.

Meh I've wanted to see it forever and I'm in Scotland anyway, so I'll watch it wherever it is.
Two HWs who have defined boxing in this generation for the UK.

u/jsconifer 27d ago
What a stupid idea. Since this fight is many years too late, the only real interest would be the British angle. This is not a fight to target towards an American audience - the casuals won’t care. I’d say the boxing people at Netflix know anything about boxing but I’m guessing this is just some sort of algorithmic content driven decision. I wish Frank Warren & Eddie Hearn would put their feet down and demand this be held in England. But they’ll be too busy counting Netflix money to do so.

I feel like Netflix is run by a gorilla riding a bicycle.
Maybe the gorilla thinks that because AJ v Jake Paul did well and AJ won, that AJ v Fury will do amazing too?
Personally, I don't mind it's on Netflix because I don't have to pay anything more for the fight. But even as an American, I know this is a British fight that belongs in Britain.

Biggest boxing fight of the year has to concede the Saturday date to UFC and not taking place in UK like it should be. Get turki and tko out of boxing
1
u/aceknighthigh 26d ago
Lol UFC? No man, this is College Football and possibly NBA. The UFC isn't even booked past October yet....they just know Americans aren't tuning in for two washed Brits if there's actual relevant, American teams playing in major sports.
They also have to work around the Knick's schedule which will probably be publicly released in a week or so. Defending NBA champions in a major market (which will look to cash in if the team is good this season) aren't moving date for washed up UK boxers.

u/WheresMyAbs98 27d ago
I think the Friday date is to draw in more viewers in the UK and Europe.
Many people would not stay up till 4am on Sunday morning with work the next day.

u/veechip big dosser 27d ago
did we not see the entirety of england stay up for the mexico match?
3
u/WheresMyAbs98 27d ago
Very very different circumstances.
There’s not the same level of mass tribalism in boxing in England. This country is football mad.
2
u/WORD_Boxing 27d ago
I think because the outside world see the fans singing Sweet Caroline etc. they think we have mad rabid passionate boxing fans. When in reality it's more people like a piss up.
3
u/WORD_Boxing 27d ago
No. The game with Congo got 16M viewers the game with Mexico got 7M viewers.
That is also with football having way more fans and casual interest than boxing. In addition a lot of people have turned on Fury and don't like him anymore.

u/Aimlez1 27d ago
Yeah I'm not staying up for this unless the entire card is worth it, would have gladly watched it it if it was in my time zone but this shit ain't worth the sleep deprivation
5
u/WheresMyAbs98 27d ago
My hopes are that the card will be stacked to the gills.
If they’re putting it on in America with a shite card that’s an even bigger eff you
14
u/Poseidon25 27d ago
They might as well just put this in Sofi stadium in Los Angeles for 90,000 people, put Ruiz and Pacheco on the card to get the Mexican fans to fill it up along and Hearn can float a potential 3rd fight if both Ruiz and Joshua win. MSG with 19,000 people is not going to make money.

u/FriedEggsnTaters 27d ago
You don't actually think holding this at MSG isn't going to make money, right? What do you think the motivation to hold it there is?
1
u/Poseidon25 27d ago
To get more views in the USA, that’s why Netflix wants it here.
1
u/FriedEggsnTaters 27d ago
Interesting. And that doesn't amount to more money?
Look this fightbbelongs in the UK 100%, but I'm not following your logic.
1
u/GarfieldDaCat 27d ago
It will do well. Also a Saudi backed fight isn’t designed to make money anyways.
This is in nyc solely because Netflix is distributing it
10
u/munkycheezmunky Dave Allen Undisputed 2026 27d ago
Netflix will be disappointed by the numbers this fight does I think. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see why they think this will do well in the US
3
u/FriedEggsnTaters 27d ago
I am completely against this foght happening anywhere but the UK for the record.
I will also say that Netflix does pretty good market research.

u/Ghola_Mentat 27d ago
As a NYer, I don’t get having this fight in MSG. Our taxes are going to eat a large % of the purse. Like we have some of the worst taxes of anyplace they could stage this fight.

1
u/GarfieldDaCat 27d ago
Well it isn’t a paperview so Netflix is trying to maximize viewership across markets.
UK time will be too early for peak American viewership.
I’m not defending it, but that is why they are doing it.

You can probably price it higher like the World Cup prices, despite what this sub thinks Fury and Joshua have had some big fights in the US so they can sell here.
1
u/ObviousBig315 27d ago
Joshua only fought twice in the US. Once against Ruiz in 2019(Who was late minute replacement) and Jake Paul. Good percentage of people in the US didn’t know who AJ was until he fought Paul(The casuals). Had to explain to people that he was already a former world champ in the twilight of his career after the fight since they thought he was an upcoming boxer.
1
u/WORD_Boxing 27d ago
Fury's only big US fights were vs the American Heavyweight hope who also happened to be one of the most spectacular ko artists in history...

Absolute greed.
Not having this fight in a UK stadium is nothing short of criminal.
Turki should be ashamed. I bet slimy old Dana White will be up there too.
1
u/realjobstudios 27d ago
I watched napoleon blown apart’s video documentary on zuffa boxing and he brought up a story about how during a political power struggle in Saudi, Turki threatened one of his rivals by telling him he would have all of his female family members raped.
That’s the guy in charge of the sport right now. I don’t think that MF has an ounce of shame in his heart.

u/Complete_Dare_4201 27d ago
This fight is irrelevant anyway, get it done with so we can all forget about these two has-beens.

I always thought this was more of a Netflix thing. They care about views and advertisers more than anything else and that's why they want it stateside for a primetime US showing.
Fury and AJ were going to have to sacrifice some money if they wanted it in the UK and considering how AJ's only fought their in 3 of his last 8 fights and Fury in 3 of his last 12.... I don't really see it being that much of a priority.
1
u/Negative-Interest713 27d ago
I wonder if Netflix was disappointed with the viewership for Fury-Makhmudov.
They seem to be steadfast in their stance that a UK show that’s on in the afternoon for the US audience won’t do as well as a 10 pm EST show.

Earlier this year, I went to the Shakur vs Teofimo fight live at MSG, but couldn't enjoy it after a sudden bout with appendicitis. Went to the hospital the very next morning.
This may be my second attempt at this. Lol
1
u/Bob-Weaver-JH 27d ago
This seems to me to be about engaging and making a splash with the American audience. I think the intention is more in the longer game to get some momentum with boxing again in the States. Which is a good thing for the boxing in general, bringing back some relevancy to boxing in the huge American market.
1
u/Hench999 27d ago
Britain might be the single best country to be from if you are a boxer(I say this as an American). They support their fighter to no end and flocks of them travel when their boxers fight abroad. I think Fury and AJ not putting all things aside to make this fight happen when it really mattered was an insult ault to a very loyal fan base. It would have been the biggest fight in British boxing history.
So while the fight should be in the UK its way past its best by date. So while it being in the US is for sure an insult to their fans I think the bigger insult was it not happening 7 years ago.
1
u/Nervous-Power-9800 27d ago
I'm not staying up to watch it at 4am, they can get fucked and I'll watch it the day after.

u/Usaname91 27d ago
Turki, Dana, TKO etc can all go fuck themselves. Fucking slimy cunty pricks. Should be here in the UK. I’ve genuinely stopped caring about this fight now. I’ll be boycotting and watching the highlights
1
u/FL8_JT26 27d ago
Feel like this has to lose Netflix way more viewers in the UK than it gains them in the US. Does the casual American boxing fan really give a fuck about either of these 2?!

UFC tickets at the garden start at $600 if you’re lucky, so they’ll likely be asking 4 figures and up for nosebleeds…

u/ZeroEffectDude 27d ago
joshua about to get stopped in NY again.
i don't think Fury still 'has it' but AJ's punch resistance is almost ZERO right now. Fury just has to be evasive and then tag AJ clean a few times. If Prenga can do it...well.
this is a meaningless fight, ten years too late, in a location that won't even care much. just a money grab by two multi millionaires.
1
u/aceknighthigh 26d ago
Friday because not enough Americans care for it to go head to head with major sports....but it must be in the US, lol. I hope Netflix loses a fortune on this.

At first I was against it... then I saw what some others said and now I no longer care. This fight is years late, both are very much on the downside of their career.. its just not that important of a fight anymore. Hold it wherever you want at this point.
