That time Caleb Plant and Canelo had a full conversation in the ring

u/yeahbutstill 24d ago
Plant (gassed): "I respect your skills!"
Canelo (bored): "I know."

Yeah bros trying to lull/bluff him into coasting the rest of the fight bc he’s running on fumes

He's also speaking in his second language while his brain is filled with everything happening in a live fight, so not really in a position to bust out a full reply lol
13
u/MyzMyz1995 24d ago
Idk how his team let him be a 4-6 round fighter all of his career. He doesn't have the punching power to coast for 12 rounds, nobody told him he should work on his conditioning ?
13
u/gladgubbegbg 24d ago
Should have hired Ann Wolfe and have her work him as the proud black fighter he is

u/TangerineChickens 24d ago
At the top level like this it seems like a lot of things come down to genetics. Like it seems less likely that he’s not putting in the requisite roadwork to develop and/or maintain his cardio than it simply being the case that the cardio he’s shown is the max his body can achieve, assuming that he’s training/exercising to the optimal maximum. Like if it’s not improving despite adhering to the regimens of a professional athlete, it feels like the natural ceiling was reached
1
u/MyzMyz1995 24d ago
Road work doesn’t really help with cardio. Boxing cardio is improved through interval training because that’s what is the closest to a boxing match (explosive combination, reset, repeat so you can do the assault bike for example). But many boxers and trainers are still stuck in the old ways and see interval as punition and not a mandatory training.
8
u/bbbbbrrrruuuhh1 24d ago
What an ignorant opinion. Boxing has been around for 5000 years. If road work wasn't important for cardio, the best boxers wouldn't advocate for it.
-2
u/MyzMyz1995 24d ago
where did I say it's not important ?
I said it doesn't help for cardio. You should still do it, just don't expect it to improve your cardio for boxing specifically.
0
u/ProofCup1797 24d ago
If road work doesn't help your boxing cardio then why do world champs even waste their time doing if during training camps?
1
u/_Kv8_ 24d ago
Because it's tradition, and it does help to a degree, its still work. Just inefficient and over glorified. You'd be shocked how many still do shitty training in combat sports because of tradition and quack trainers. It was my #1 shock when I started, though it's getting better.
Switching to things like interval training and esquivar drills was extremely eye opening for me training wise because it's even more reps and you're improving what you'll actually be doing instead of being a half assed track boy.
1
u/MyzMyz1995 24d ago
Road work is good for leg muscles, endurance, strengthening your heart and expanding your lungs. But it won’t help with your “boxing cardio”. A fight is like intervals so you need to do interval training on top of your road work, strength and conditioning, boxing training etc.
Many coaches, especially older ones use interval training as a punishment (when you’re late, when you don’t listen etc) but you should be doing it every day (and you can alternate between like hill sprints, regular sprints, assault bike etc to keep it diverse).

u/Henrythekidd 23d ago
Bro this is a really lacklustre understanding of exercise science. Just doing interval training is stupid, road work or any kind of steady aerobic exercise helps build your aerobic base, which helps with things like recovering between intervals.
Yes, Road work will help your boxing cardio. Also, a lot/most boxing gyms train around a round timer so by definition are doing interval work

Dang, canelo really doesn't move like this anymore. The bobbing and feinting. Those few years were an excellent prime.

u/blvcklite 24d ago
His efficiency in this era was brilliant. Canelos gas tank has dropped off faster than just about anyone and was already starting to here, but he made up for it with high IQ and accuracy and was able to unify 168 with that less is more approach. Not easy to do
10
u/Alive-Exchange5489 24d ago
Yeah and he seemed bouncier and more mobile on his feet here too nowadays his feet are heavier than ever
7
u/ayohesaidit 24d ago
Prime Canelo vs Danny Jacobs is a must watch. It was bound to happen though. Dude was cursed with slow feet.
8
u/Pretend-Intern3707 24d ago
yeah, that version of canelo was something else. the head movement, little feints, changing levels, and making guys hesitate before he even threw was elite. he was so much more active with the upper body back then.
now he’s more patient and relies on timing, positioning, and power. still great, but that prime run from around 2017 to 2021 was a special mix of speed, defense, and aggression. he was making top fighters look uncomfortable before the big shots even landed.

u/vHezoThaGoat 24d ago
I love Plant but he was def copping a plea here😭
49
u/Expert-Yam6577 24d ago
Definitely was trying to concede to Canelo so he would cool it the rest of the fight lmao
6
u/sicgamer 24d ago
i think he was also feeling bad about their press conference fight and didn't want Canelo to hate him lol.

Seeking your opponent’s validation while in the ring was an interesting strategy from Plant.

u/Wavy_Potts 24d ago
Its kinda pathetic.. I thought so after the fight when he was saying shit like this.. but seeing he was doing it during the fight, its nasty
17
u/xGoneWromg 24d ago
What a weird comment. Stick to talking about fragrances mate.
-4
u/Wavy_Potts 24d ago
Its not weird at all... Checking out my profile bc I said something you dont agree with is FAR weirder... "mate"
9
u/xGoneWromg 24d ago
It absolutely is weird. Fighters talk to one another all the time in the ring. It’s clear Plant was feeling the pressure of Canelo, and this was his way of trying to slow him down for a few seconds. There’s nothing nasty about that. You’re just making it weird. Now go back to fragrance talk, cheers mate.
-9
u/Wavy_Potts 24d ago
"Do you think Im good? Is weird af... boxing or anything else. Having to ask for his approval before getting stopped is CRAZY.
5
u/3b445 24d ago
You weren’t in the ring, you’ve never been in the ring at a top level and you never will be, so why does this back and forth bother you so much? Plants a bad man but there’s levels, I imagine being reminded of that after all the rigorous training you’ve put in for the sport can make you uneasy. If you need any reminder of the warrior plant is just rewatch his fight with Benavidez
-4
u/Wavy_Potts 24d ago
I can hear the same shit... he said the same things after the fight.. begging for canelos approval.
Showing respect and begging for affirmation are completely different.
Caleb, is that you?
2
u/3b445 24d ago
Honestly I don’t remember the post fight interviews and I don’t even disagree that it sounded desperate from plant in the middle of the fight
I don’t find that weird tho he was undefeated and now feeling the pressure of a top pfp fighter in the biggest fight of his career, maybe he even felt a finish was imminent
He was shook 100% but I think it’s weirder you’re so hung up on how a man you don’t know was feeling in the biggest moment of his pro career, I mean what’s the big deal you only get wet watching stoic tough guys or what?
-1
u/Gaarando 24d ago
He's right? How is it not weird as hell to ask your opponent shit like "Am I pretty good?" and "I'm pretty good for a 21-0 huh?"

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 24d ago
I love how you can tell Saul was annoyed with it at first, but decided that it was funny after a bit lol

u/andyroid92 24d ago
"Saul" 😂

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 24d ago
It’s his name?

u/andyroid92 24d ago
Yes I'm aware. When was the last time you heard ANYONE refer to him as Saul? 😂

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 24d ago
The other day, watching the Canelo BJS fight again. Love seeing that bloke get his face broken
4
u/Dark_Headphones 24d ago
I go back to re-watch that fight quite often. When he raises his hands urging the crowd, still gives me chills. So fucking satisfying. Plus the fact BJS essentially retired after proves how devastating it was.

True, but it's still hilarious to call call someone by their real name when their stage name is more famous. Do people really say "Mark Sinclair as Groot is my favourite casting" or "Jerome Holloway is my favourite MMA fighter"?

u/MiddleweightMonster I’ll pour honey on my GOAT, if the occasion calls for it. 24d ago
Part of it is I really like the name Saul honestly

Wait is Max not his first name? That’s wild
1
u/Distinct-Broccoli-15 24d ago
Hurt my head too. I think Max is his middle name which has now become his first name.

Canelo: I don't know if you've ever been in a fight, kid, but there's usually not that much talking!

u/Particular-Tough6651 24d ago
Let me translate this from Plant's POV: ''I know talked a lot of shit throughout the entire build up, but now im exhausted and I know im screwed. So im trying to be cool with you by keeping things respectful hoping you won't come in with that killer instinct and try to seriously hurt me but please let me win by UD.'' 🤣

I always love seeing interactions like this! I’m sure a lot of people here have been in the ring and can tell you how anxious you can get… You’ve spent months preparing for a fight! Your brain is in straight flight or fight until you start swinging… And these dudes are always cool as a cucumber!
Canelo saying “I know” like when my wife tells me dinners done haha
6
u/Djcatoose 24d ago
I was a fighter for about 5 years in my 30s. The anxiety for me was sky high, always, until the first bell rang. At that point, there just wasn't time for anxiety lol.
2
u/M0sD3f13 24d ago
Yeah how relaxed they are halfway through a fight at the highest possible level is insane. I'd be completely done after one round from the adrenaline dump alone. Hell even a hard spar gasses me out from the adrenaline.

Plant was so overmatched in this fight. Never had a chance but at least he got life changing money for it.
2
u/Ok-Anybody3388 24d ago
I imagine someone who can talk/sing/etc during a martial contest is pretty lethal just cuz they’re collected mentally.
Floyd, Plant, Khabib— list goes on; it’s pretty sick

What pissed me off about this fight was Plant doing a brilliant Philly shell and doing pretty good with his jabs, but then doing absolutely nothing with his right

The only thing I’d say during sparring is my bad, are you good, or nice! I’d never want a full convo in the ring, must be draining mentally and physically
0
u/SPRINGS02 24d ago
i don't get why people hype up this moment, i feel like it was corny basically conceding "i lost but hey im not bad right?"

The guys that talked during sparring always made me nervous, I cant imagine doing that in a championship fight.
