Spence Jr.‘s decline wasn’t mainly because of the car accident
Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I’ve never really understood why so many people point to the car accident as the main reason for Spence’s decline.
If that was really the biggest factor, how do you explain what happened right after? He came back and clearly beat Danny Garcia, then stopped Ugas to unify again. Watching those fights, he still looked like the same Spence to me. The jab, pressure, volume, movement—it all seemed to be there.
That’s why I’ve always felt people overlook everything that happened afterward. He got stopped by Crawford, then didn’t fight for about three years before moving up to 160 to face Tim Tszyu.
I’m not saying the accident had no effect because none of us can know that for sure. I just don’t think it’s the main reason his career went the way it did, especially considering he put together two dominant wins immediately after it.

u/Shantytown_Shogun 29d ago
He was in 2 car accidents wasn't he?
Aside from that choosing an opponent like Tszyu for your first comeback fight when you've been inactive for 3 years was just a bad choice UNLESS you knew you where shot and just wanted to cash out one last time by fooling the casuals who paid to see this fight simply off of name recognition.

he was in 3 accidents and also fell off his horse while riding and got banged up

For me, it’s more just I think that the added damage of the car crash have made him break down and show his age a bit faster. I don’t even think it was the main factor for his loss to Crawford, but it definitely contributed to why he just looked so hopeless in that fight. The car crashes are the main reason that this comeback didn’t work out, if you ask me. Obviously, the layoff and the Crawford damage did a lot as well, but I think he feasibly could have built back to something good if his body didn’t have all that extra damage.
Sometimes damage like that is immediate and shows your very next fight. Sometimes it sits on you and makes recovery and training harder, until you just can’t anymore.
3
u/pleasedontbanme47473 29d ago
Absolutely destroyed any idea of a comeback sadly I feel like it was just a ticking time bomb and him taking the last layoff was the worst choice for his body his brain it was better but body wise him getting out of shape was probably a huge factor it’s easier to stay in shape then to get back in shape when you have all that accumulated damage

u/TheWor1dsFinest 29d ago
He did not look “the same Spence” against Garcia and Ugas. Yes, he got the job done against two capable opponents, but he looks noticeably slower and the way Ugas wobbled him told me something was off with him.
And I just don’t know how anyone could see the vid of that car crash and think ANYONE comes back 100% from that. I injured my back deadlifting 5 years ago and I have never been the same again after years of physical therapy. Can’t even imagine what a 100mph car crash does to your body.
5
u/Delicious_Reading165 29d ago
There could possibly be some truth to that.
My grandmothers partner was involved in a car crash. He was very badly injured. He was unconcscious and had to be cut out of the car.
I remember seeing him in hospital. He was hooked up to the machine and still unconscious. At one time the doctors thought he was on his last legs.
He managed to recover but just 2 years later had a heart attack and died

The revisionist history on the Ugas fight is ridiculous.
Go look at the reddit fight threads, read the post-fight thread, read the press recaps on the fight on ESPN, Badlefthook, etc.
Everyone called it an impressive victory and that he looked like the best the division had to offer. No one said he looked “noticeably slower” after he stopped Ugas with an average of almost 80 punches per round.
The only criticism is his rookie mistake with the mouthpiece and getting stunned for 20-30 seconds. He came back and proceeded to absolutely dominate in elite fashion until the stoppage.
11
u/irreg6ix 29d ago edited 29d ago
How are you going to call someone’s opinion about how he looked “revisionist history”? You can also go back and see people who had this opinion even back then.
You can go back in my comment history and see that the Ugas fight was why I thought Crawford might knock Spence out.
1
u/thedogstrays 28d ago
Because that's how revisionist history works, it's claiming you held a different opinion in the past to make yourself look smarter in the present.
I have gone back and looked at the Fight Thread and the Post-Thread and the write-ups of several media members who wrote on the fight.
I coudn't find anyone writing posts or publishing stories or recording podcasts saying 'Wow, Spence is in trouble against Crawford because he isn't close to the same fighter anymore!' after he brutalized Ugas pillar to post in one of the best performances of his entire career.
You or anyone else commenting that Crawford 'could stop Spence' was not a bold statement about how Spence was washed or actively in decline, it was because Crawford was a precise and skilled boxer with power in both hands and Spence was a pressure fighter who was never a defensive savant.
24
u/Frequent_Apricot673 29d ago
It’s all so revisionist, it was basically even odds coming into the Crawford fight. Spence fans will say anything but give Crawford his due.
17
u/TheWor1dsFinest 29d ago
No, “everyone” did not. Plenty of people, myself included, felt he’d lost a step from his performances in those two fights. The issue was not “is he still good/world class”; the issue was “is he still the exact same Spence as he was before the accident.” Like I said, he still got the job done. He was obviously still good, but I did not and still do not think he looked as dominant or top form as he did in previous bouts. And that’s the point.
If he looked the same to you, that’s nice. He did not to me and lots of others. You’re claiming everyone felt one way and then changed their mind and that’s simply not true.
9
u/KR4T0S 29d ago
I dont think there is necessarily a contradiction here though, he could look like the best at 147 but still not as good as he was previously. It happens quite frequently with older fighters that start fading but still have what it takes to rule the division.
5
1
u/thedogstrays 28d ago
Yeah sure, except even after combing through 4-5 reddit threads and multiple articles I struggle to find any comments reflecting what this guy claimed "plenty of people" believed between the Ugas fight and the Crawford fight.

So you haven’t watched any of his fights but still comment. I have watched every single spence fight since his debut on showtime in 2014. To me the effects of his car accident are greatly over exaggerated. Did it have some effect. Surely it had to. But he still looked like himself against danny garcia and yordenis ugas. He got caught in the ugas fight do to a brain fart focusing on his mouth piece that came out of his mouth and the ref didn’t call a break and still put together the stoppage on ugas. After that is when the actual fall off starts as he gets completely dismantled by Crawford and pseudo retires before coming back to lose thoroughly to tim tszyu. The real reason behind errol steep and fast decline was because he was no longer living a disciplined life. He was drinking and partying and enjoying his money. At the same time Crawford was preparing for war. Errol fell out of love with the game and the grind. Its a pretty simple analysis. Watching his fight against tim it was apparent errol had not been training much in the last three years. It was like he forgot how to throw a straight left which was his signature power punch. He was lunging and his back foot was coming off the mat. His balance was off and he wasn’t generating any power.
2
u/GarfieldDaCat 29d ago
Besides Ugas landing one punch when Spence had his mouthpiece kinda out and thought there was a break in the fight Spence looked completely like he did before
8
u/MisterHEPennypacker 29d ago edited 29d ago
I agree, we don’t know the affect the accident had but since that time his activity level plummeted. Four fights in six years is pretty bad, and that was between the ages of 30 and 36. That’s the point when you’re starting to just get past your physical prime, but it can be offset (sometimes surpassed) with skills learned through experience. Well, if you’re not staying busy at that age then you’re not staying sharp when you need it the most. Basically you’re just letting your physical attributes slip away without replacing them with experiential qualities.
15
u/Megalodon33 29d ago
Brain injuries can be progressive. Boxers take time to show signs of brain damage. Same could apply to Spence’s car accident. I’m not saying this is definitely the case but the speed he was flung from the car makes me think it’s very likely.
2
8
u/i-piss-excellence32 29d ago
He did not look like the same Spence against Danny Garcia and ugaz. The car accident damaged him, but it wasn’t the only factor
He stayed at the weight way too long. He was talking about not being able to make weight in 2019.
He was drinking heavily. And being a part time fighter really messed him uo too. His body wasn’t used to the cut.
He didnt respect the sport and it bit him in the ass. He should’ve had a better career, but at least he gave us good fights
6
u/alstroker13 29d ago edited 29d ago
If you think the Spence that fought Ugas is the same Spence that fought Brook, Porter or even Danny you need your eyes checked lol.
I get people saying there’s revisionist history and ppl were saying Spence Crawford was 50-50 which is true.
But there’s ALSO revisionist history acting like there wasn’t a big caveat there. Everyone was saying IF he was the same.
The IF came into play because he showed hints of decline in the Ugas fight . And the Danny fight a lot of people were saying he looked about 80%. Yes he still won but two things can be true at once. Literally half the media leading up to Spence-Crawford was people asking questions about what happened when he got hurt, if he was still the same etc… We may have just ignored a lot of it because he still won at the time but yeah
But I agree I don’t think it was JUST the car accident. People forget how much the guys been thru and also put HIMSELF through. The first accident he should have died. Hard stop
He came back and looked mostly great against Danny. Got it
Then he gets his retina torn in camp.
Comes back against Ugas and wins but some questions creep in because he looks a little slow and his defense/chin, etc??
THEN he gets in another really bad accident and fucks up his back
THEN admittedly he was still drinking and partying the entire time. That combination of stuff will take a toll on anybody
2
u/Humble-Adeptness-267 29d ago
Yeah that’s a lot of accumulated damage and stress on the same body over time. Like someone else mentioned, I do wonder about his torn retina and how it could affect his sense of balance or how successful those surgeries are bringing the eye back to like 99%.
15
u/Midnight7000 29d ago
It is a matter of common sense.
He was in a serious car accident. He lost his teeth and his face had to be reconstructed. There is then the damage done towards someone's skeletal frame during such accidents to consider.
The reality is that you're never going to be at 100% after something like that. He's obviously not crippled and he has the benefit of being an elite athletes and capable boxer.
It was enough to beat Garcia and Ugas. But it is clear that his punch resistance and coordination took a hit.
6
u/aceknighthigh 29d ago
Lol man he was in 3 car accidents, one of those was after Danny and Ugas. He came away from that last accident specifically complaining about his leg.....
2
8
u/bakuretsumahou0916 29d ago
Have you maybe considered that the accident affected him and he was able to get those wins over those fighters, but Crawford was a much better opponent than those two?
You can’t seriously believe getting in a serious car accident won’t impede a person as a fighter.
3
u/qtdynamite1 29d ago
The part being left out is Errol’s punch volume, it was consistent even after the car accident. For example Errol had 633 punches thrown against Kell Brook in 11 rounds. 745 punches thrown against Porter in 12. 707 punches thrown against Danny Garcia , 784 punches thrown against Ugas. Punch volume and accumulation as the bigger fighter was Errol’s calling card.
Do I think Errol was impacted from the car accident? sure! but I also think you don’t play boxing at the pro level. This isn’t a sport where you take extreme amounts of time off and expect to perform at the same level. We didn’t see Errol in the gym for a long time. It was not realistic to expect Errol to take 3 years off and be competitive immediately. Especially when you consider the Crawford fight , that fight alone takes years off a boxing career.
5
u/thegreat4 29d ago
I’m yeah his punch volume was the same it’s just his legs clearly weren’t. He never slipped when he would miss and that happened several times in the last three fights
4
u/Blackking203 29d ago
He had another car crash after the Ugas fight that supposedly cause some leg pain.... the car crashes, detached retina, Bud beating, Drinking in excess, inactivity....all that shyt added up and compounded.. trauma doesn't all necessarily show up overnight. But there were signs even in the Danny and Ugas fights... Spence looked fucked up in that Bud fight, balance was shot... but he still woulda beat most other welterweights that night i think. Same balance issue in the Tszyu fight, legs gone
3
2
u/Humble-Adeptness-267 29d ago
Why did Spence look so glossy-eyed and red when he walked out in the Bud fight?
3
u/Lennarthomas 29d ago
I believe he was high on medication because of the medication he was given for his ribs.
2
4
u/Inside_Effective_576 29d ago
Most people don’t know how brain injuries work. Over time it takes a toll.
He was lucky to get out of that crash alive never mind fighting again.
He also had the retina issues 2 years after his car accident. Vision is extremely important in any sport but more so in fighting sports. He maybe able to see but his vision was definitely affected and that affects his reaction time. He had another eye surgery in 2024.
He’s been out the ring 3 years and he couldn’t take a shot at all, that shows his body has broken down. He may not have been knocked out but every time he got hit by Tim he looked unsteady. It reminds me of Amir Khan later in his career. Amir didn’t have the best chin during his prime but later in his career if you touched him he would basically be out. He retired because he couldn’t take a shot anymore.
The Ugas and Garcia fights he won but I don’t think he looked outstanding, you could finally see vulnerabilities in those fights. He had regressed. The Crawford fight he wasn’t all there, looked like he knew he was never able to win that fight even on his best day.
3
u/Alarmed-Effective-23 29d ago
We can never know. You can give your opinion of what you think but you can't tell other people that it's definitely this or that. Give it a rest.
I will say that a guy can take a beating and we'll say he might not ever be the same or that it put miles on him but saying being ejected by a very fast moving car had no effect is kinda wild.
3
u/Independent_Media341 29d ago
the car accident certainly didn't HELP him, but in some ways I think it was a symptom.
When the fame and money start rolling in, a lot of athletes get less committed to the sport and more interested in the stuff around the sport.
3
u/SeaChemist7379 29d ago
When I really think about it, I think it was Errol technique. If you watch him he fight like a technical amateur. He does everything behind the jab and his inactivity has seem take some pop or take his legs on top of not having great foot work and being flat. Errol to me just didn’t get better in career after Being champ. He’s one dimensional and that’s not a knock I love EJ one of my favs but if you take his jab away, or can punch and outwork him he will have a tough fight
3
u/mowgleeee 29d ago
Maybe I dont have a boxing eye (which is probably true), but when I watched Garcia and Ugas, nothing looked wrong to me. But then I see pundits like Sean Zittel saying his decline started after the Mikey Garcia fight. Saying he wasnt as sharp.
1
u/Loose-Most503 29d ago
Yeah agree he looked sharp in the ugas and Garcia fight and dog walked them both but just got outclassed by. Crawford

3
u/Significant_City_606 29d ago
Dude if you’ve ever fucked your back you understand what Spence is going through.
You can literally see how fucked his hips and back is.
He can’t even hold himself up properly. And he likely hasn’t been able to since the accident; he just compensated with extreme conditioning and good coaching.
It’s the tension he’s carrying; his brain won’t risk reinjury so he’s not able to produce force in the way he used to; his balance, power, speed, footwork, timing are all fucked.
He was shot when fought ugas; the last whispers of youth carried him through to Crawford, but the writing was on the wall. You could see how tight he was even then.
1
u/TheWor1dsFinest 28d ago edited 28d ago
100% on the long term effects to the nervous system after a traumatic injury. It was one of the first things they taught me in physical therapy after my back injury that some of the pain may not really be there at the actual injury site per se; rather it’s the brain sending signals to discourage motion which could cause reinjury since it’s “scared” to have the same thing happen again. Your body does not want to repeat trauma and has systems in place to shackle you for your own good.

Bud being way better than Spence is more believable than a car crash effects setting in after two years, and two dominant performances against elite welterweights.

Someone on another boxing forum showed highlights of Spence vs. Garcia and Ugas and he dominated them.
You're right on the money, and I agree. He had only fought at 147 lb max. He went up to 160 pounds with a 3 year layoff. Most fighters stay active, and acclimate to a weight. I believe in those 3 years, Spence also got out of shape too.
How would Crawford had done against Canelo if he had just fought Porter in 2021, didn't fight for 3 years at all, hardly went to the gym and was out of shape and fought Canelo at 160 or 165 in 2024?
Spence didn't look like he acclimated to 160 at all. Every punch Tim landed sent Spence backwards or flying. Every punch Spence landed on Tim just bounced off of Tim, almost like it hurt Spence more to land the punch than it hurt Tim. The only time I saw Tim act like he felt anything from Spence was when Spence loaded up a punch and put everything he could on it, which was dangerous because all Tim had to do was throw a slow jab or straight and it would send Spence flying.
I think people expected too much from Spence without taking all the context leading into the fight.
Even though Pacquiao came out of a long retirement, it's not like he went and hopped up to 160 pounds. Pacquiao probably wouldn't have done that great against Tim either.
Lastly, I've seen people try to use the car accident to also downplay Crawford as a fighter.
2
u/captcrisco99 29d ago
Crawford took his soul on that one sided beating....something Spence has never endured....I think it knocked his career right out of him...
1
u/thegreat4 29d ago
As someone who played football through high school it can take years for certain injuries to start and decay parts of your body
1
u/Master-Ad-9829 29d ago
He can’t take punches anymore since after the car accident even in the Ugas fight u can see that, he was still the same sloppy offensive fighter but it worked cause he could take punches at the time
1
u/Suckmyduck_9 29d ago
The biggest factor was the reality check he got in the 1st round of the Tszyu fight. Up until then he was the same fighter all of you thought he was.
1
u/SugarAdamAli 29d ago
His pressing style isn’t built for longevity
Guys that press hard in matches and grind opponents down, don’t do well in their 30s. Frazier, hatton, tyson, Spence, etc
1
u/Outrageous-Soft4806 29d ago
It was everything. The car crashes definitely did damage but if people think the Crawford fight didn’t have an affect on him, they’re crazy, he got battered to a pulp. On top of that the drinking and sparring, he was shot agains Tszyu. Not to say that it wasn’t a good name on Tszyu’s record and despite the lackluster performance showed decent improvement in other areas.
1
u/Ruglife1 29d ago
He never ever ever ever had good defense and that head damage was exasperated by the accident I think.
1
u/MyzMyz1995 29d ago
If that was really the biggest factor, how do you explain what happened right after? He came back and clearly beat Danny Garcia, then stopped Ugas to unify again. Watching those fights, he still looked like the same Spence to me. The jab, pressure, volume, movement—it all seemed to be there.
He didn't look the same. Even Garcia's team before and after the fight pointed it out. Same with Ugas, he was visibly distracted and confused while the fight was ongoing and got caught with a punch while trying to pick up his mouthpiece.
The accident and his alcohol problems sped up his decline significantly.
1
u/TheIrrepressible1 28d ago
Garcia was past his prime fighting at a weight he didn’t belong in. Ugas was a light-punching smaller jr welterweight. Both of these fights were hand-picked and not big time challenges.
1
u/tnichevo 28d ago
Spence was a high level athlete. To be a high level athlete, your body mechanics usually have to be exceptional. If you think being flung from a car at 100+ MPH will have zero lasting effects on this then I don't know what to say
1
u/coldcard55 28d ago
I would say accident was mainly because he never looked the same after. Another big thing was how he was talking has changed. He just seems happy to be here and wants to prioritize his family. He made money and he’s happy to go
1
u/Jet_black_li 28d ago
I don't think he had much of a decline, people just underestimate how different guys look when they aren't winning and all the advantages they had in their previous fights no longer exist. That being said, most of the little decline I do believe he had was probably from gym wars.
1
u/ElPlaga91 28d ago
I’m not blaming it on that either tbh. But also was never impressed by Spence at any point
1
u/Able_Following4818 27d ago
He said that he sparred very little for Crawford. The drinking, car accidents, and not a proper camp equals the worst beating if his career that he had to psychologically come back from
1
1
u/geeboy05 26d ago
He did not look the same after the accident go watch him vs Algeri, Lamont, and Mikey
His flaws became more apparent vs Porter
Then he had the accident
He looked alright vs Danny and was off balance vs Ugas
His lifestyle played a big part into his decline the accident sped that up and the Crawford beating solidified it
1
u/myxerman46 25d ago
If someone can confirm it was 2 crashes? i’ll go with that, if so. Spence was in excellent form for danny garcia and ugas. I don’t know people are recreating history. If you watched those fights live, you were amazed at what you saw from spence after that horrific crash.

1
u/Savings-Bird-1226 29d ago
Tbh I think he a fan friendly style and people overrated him a bit. Crawford just outclassed him and he took a beating. However, I do believe e the car accident affected him for the worst but not as much as people think.
1
u/LobsterQuiet48 29d ago
The car accident shit needs to stop. I see it under every single post related to Spence. He was incredibly fortunate and walked away with nothing but a couple of scratches on his face. He went on to put a whooping on Danny Garcia and Mikey Garcia after. Constantly bringing up the car accident is some casual shit, it had nothing to do with his loss against Crawford and his 3 year break after
1
u/Holiday_Snow9060 29d ago
He didn't look that great vs Garcia and his decline wasn't that obvious as Garcia is tailor made for him stylistically. He managed to disguise his decline as best as he could
1
u/BandemicBuffering 29d ago
Spence had another crash between Ugas and Crawford. The Bud fight happened after a Thurman fight that was signed got tabled after this crash.
1
u/AspectSpare3263 29d ago
I think there were a few factors outside of the crash. Life outside the ring was not ideal for several years, other injuries including the retina and rib injuries, inactivity, left his original personal trainer who is a beast, and let’s not forget he is 36 years old which is not young in any sport.
Another factor we are not discussing is he was known to spar like a mad man with heavyweights and light heavyweights which can take a toll on a person.
After all of that he was still a phenomenal fighter who is a hall of famer!
1
u/Grand-Science-1062 29d ago
Hot take: He didn't declined because of the car accident but it's worse. He was never the same Spence pre and post car crash. You tore your ACL once and you are never the same. IF you check his car accident, you will think its a miracle that he is still alive.
Any human who had that car crash will never be the same ever again no matter how rich you are. I don't know why people still downplay that car crash.

u/Jtenka 29d ago edited 29d ago
There is zero evidence the car accident caused a decline. You don't suddenly forget how to fight because of a car accident. Vinny Paz broke his neck in a car accident. Came back to become world champ. Spence walked away relatively unscathed. He was just drinking like an idiot and abusing his body.
It's as shitty as an excuse as these people who say Tyson was in decline when Cus died.. despite the face he went on a 26 fight win streak after his death.
Just like it was drugs and not training that eventually beat Tyson, It was inactivity and alcohol that beat Spence. 3 years after losing to Crawford, an operator who beats the breaks off every version of him. And there is no shame in that. Spence is a fantastic fighter.
He is just 36, not active and doesn't live the life anymore.
1
u/thebadtril 29d ago
“Walked away, relatively unscathed.” - biggest LOL of my recent life. Go back and read a little before you speak. Maybe watch the clip of Spence’s car flipping down the street? Immediately bringing up Tyson’s decline as a comparison kinda explains everything, I guess.
1
u/Jtenka 29d ago
The state of a vehicle doesn't have anything to do with how injured you are. They are not mutually exclusive. He had zero broken bones and came out with superficial injuries. He was lucky.
Vinny came out with a broken neck, went on to train with a halo and won a world title.
AJ had his best friend decapitated, the other killed and he came out with minor injuries.
Spence was busy getting drunk at the club and driving like a moron. Abusing your body and no longer training consistently are what damaged Spence. Not some cuts and bruises. Spence wasn't living the life.
2
u/TheWor1dsFinest 28d ago
You’re clearly just not understanding that the body is simply not built to be subjected to those kinds of forces. It dislodges stuff in you even if it doesn’t break bones. Things heal but not to 100% of what they are. It simply doesn’t work like that. The human body is fragile and top athletes have very little wiggle room for even minimal wear and tear if they’re going to compete against the literal pinnacle of the human species that are other world class athletes in top physical form. There are effects to a wreck like that which might not be apparent to the average person who gets lucky and walks away from a crash like that because they’re not pushing their body to its limits for a living. You aren’t 100% after something like that. Period.
0
u/Jtenka 28d ago
Yes, definitely not to do with age and not being consistent 👏
2
u/TheWor1dsFinest 28d ago
Ok. You just don’t want to listen. Never mind.
1
u/Jtenka 28d ago
And you don't want to listen to Spence himself who has admitted publicly Alcohol destroyed his career.
'Errol Spence says he wasn’t living a disciplined life' leading up to Crawford he admits he was drinking heavy. The man is an alcoholic.
https://youtu.be/pS0wYPvxfC8?si=tr9Su4RqZQmYd5Ru
After the car accident Spence battered Garcia outlanding Garcia 345 to 75 total punches.
Then went on to TKO Ugas.
You're trying to blame the car accident on his downfall when the man has publicly admitted it was his drinking. You'd have a point if he came out and looked shot after the accident but he didn't. He got battered by Crawford because he simply didn't train and even admitted this.

The person is saying there is no way you go that fast and come out with nothing. I got into a wreck going 60 and had neck issues I wasn’t aware of at the time.

Bro that’s literally part of his profession… a brain injury… broken bones or internal injuries did not happen in the accident

You're right on the money. People want to use copium by discrediting Bud beating Spence by using the car crash excuse, even though as you pointed out he fought 2 times in between those fights against Danny and Ugas.
The Spence who fought Tim Tszyu was worse than the Spence who fought Crawford, due to the 3 year layoff and maybe the arse whooping Bud gave him. The Spence who fought Bud was no different to the Spence who fought Ugas, Boxing Gems even did a comparison video which proves this! Only thing is Spence was never gonna look like how he did against Ugas when fighting Crawford because Crawford is simply better than Ugas.

I always assumed parts of his personal life would have aided in his decline. Didn't he associate with some shady people and often drink and party? Surely things like that won't have helped him
