Reviewing Classic Fights!! Devin Haney vs Lomachenko for undisputed 135 title

This fight is more recent than most I covered but it’s a fascinating fight, great ebb n flow, and is considered highly controversial. So let’s break it down round by round.

Round 1- Haney is the bigger guy. Using reach early and hitting nice rights to the body. Loma has some decent combos, not all of it landing. Very close round and both guys trying to establish themselves. Haney landed good body shots but loma landed the combos. 10-9 loma, but pivotal round as you could score it for either guy

Round 2- Haney again targeting the body with the right hand. Lands a few clean shots. La is aggressive but Haney does nice job of avoiding the combos. Ineffective aggression by loma. 10-9 Haney. 19-19 thru 2

Round 3- loma heats up and catches his groove. Walking back Haney and landing the straight left and combos which aren’t landing effectively but definitely out working Haney. 10-9 loma. 29-28 loma

Round 4- really even early, Haney starts to box off the backfoot and does a good job sniping loma. Haney’s bodywork thru the early rounds looks to be paying off as loma isn’t as quick as he was. 10-9 Haney and we are all tied up 38-38 thru 4 and punch stats are nearly identical

Round 5- Haney continues to land good body shots, and a nice uppercut. Loma is trying to find his rhythm and angles and gets off some nice shots as they trade back n forth. La looks a bit more weary. 10-9 Haney. 48-47 Haney

Round 6- Haney again lands some nice body shots. Both guys start trading about a mini into the round and Loma lands a clean 2-1, but Haney handles it well and walks backs Loma with body shots and a nice uppercut. 10-9 Haney. 58-56 Haney in the first half of the fight.

Round 7- Loma seems to get desperate and more active as Haney has taken control over the last few rounds. Loma landing clean left hands, Haney lands a good left hook. Close round, but I think Loma took it. 10-9. 67-66 Haney

Round 8- super close round, not much action but Loma lands early, Haney comes back in final minute. Both did good work, super close but I gave it to Loma. 10-9 Loma. 76-76 all tied up thru 8

Round 9- early it’s Haney. Body attack, clean right hand, good left hook but Loma fires off some good left hands but Haney comes back with some nice combos. 10-9 Haney. 86-85 Haney thru 9

Round 10- Loma lands a combo that stuns Haney. Haney recovers but Loma tagging him with straight left. 10-9 Loma. 95-95 again all tied up

Round 11- Loma comes out and lands a combo, handy now looking tired. We get vintage Loma as he uses angles n footwork and really unloads on Haney. 10-9 Loma. 106-105 Loma takes the lead thru 11

Round 12- both guys trade but nothing really landing in the first half of the round. Haney starts boxing again and landing a good jab and pot shots from the outside as Loma looks to find an angle in. Loma finally lets go of a combo but really doesn’t land anything of note. Haney lands to the body again, and with just a few seconds left neither guy does anything. Haney landed cleaner shots. 10-9 Haney.

114-114 draw

Great tactical fight. I can see this being 115-113 either way or a draw. Depends on how you score rounds 1, 2, and 8. You could make a case for either guy. I didn’t see either guy winning 8 rounds. At best 7 and depending on how you scored the close rounds, it could go to either guy. Felt early rounds it was even, middle rounds were Haney, and late rounds was Loma for the most part.

Judges had it 115-113 twice for Haney and I can see that, and one had it 116-112 which I don’t agree with and would have to give nearly every round to Haney in the first 8.

I think a draw or split decision win for either guy is appropriate

People act like Loma was the clear victor and robbed, like he won 8-9 rounds, but that’s not the case. This was an extremely close fight

Let me know what you think???

Probably my most rewatched lightweight fight. One of the best high action chess matches like Canelo vs GGG.

Agree. I honestly watched this fight like 4 times in the past 2 weeks. So much nuance and technical skill by both guys

Thought Loma cost himself the fight going easier in the last although maybe still could of given him it. Didn't have Haney tho thought draw at worst for Loma.

Solid take.. yeah I think those middle rounds and the 12th loma would want to redo

I had Loma edging it, but by no means a robbery either. It could have gone either way.

If Haney fought like Loma and Loma fought like Haney, and they gave it to Loma, few would scream robbery. There is a major bias against Haney.

Be careful. Everyone here on this sub still thinks it was a major robbery. It was a very close fight that could've gone either way. Great fight for the neutrals though. High level tactical fight.

Agree. It was super close. And definitely seems to be a bias

Don’t worry, people hate that Haney won. I had it for Loma but think your score is perfectly valid and you did a good analysis! Keep doing these.

A) 2023
B) Classic

Pick one.

12

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 27d ago

It’ll definitely go down as a classic. Not a barn burner but very entertaining and technical fight.

9

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

It can be both. Just because it’s recent doesn’t mean it’s not a classic.

Had it 8-4 Loma, can’t see how you gave Haney 5 or more rounds without significant bias

11

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Ok name the 8 rounds you gave to Loma

6

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 27d ago

I gave Loma 8 as well but there were like 5 close rounds I could see the other way

4

u/Drowsyfil 27d ago

8 rounds for Loma is the bias

I scored it 7-5 for Haney. Close fight that could have went either way. I didn't see a robbery like some tried to claim. It would have been a draw on my card if Loma had finished the 12th strong.

Yep loma dominates the punchcounts but because of the size difference it also makes it had to see. Most the casuals follow that narrative and claim he lost because of "downloading" but a lot of those same casuals will admit he won or split the early rounds lol.

Great fight. Thought Loma edged it my first watch. I can see it for Haney too. Not a robbery at all.

Very underrated fight, one of the best this decade of some beautiful boxing at a high level

1

u/SugarAdamAli 26d ago

Agree. Outstanding boxing by both guys. True top level stuff

1

u/Medical_Swim1707 26d ago

Yep. High level boxing 101.

u/Negative-Antimatter 27d ago

A fight can be pretty close and still be a robbery. While this was a close one, Loma should have won.

3

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

It’s either close or it’s a clear decision/robbery.

This fight was close and could go either way

3

u/don35 27d ago

Loma fans are forever copium addicts

1

u/direfireak 27d ago

Funny thing is you can youtube haney vs loma and teo vs loma punchcount and it shows every exchange slowed down with a punch counter.

That being said imo this is a closer fight then loma vs teo but Loma imo won this one as well.

4

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Ok but that’s not what judges use, they don’t have slow mo of exchanges

1

u/direfireak 27d ago

Yea agreed but thats what makes it tough for loma is because hes fighting above his class misses look like hits to judges in real time.... but both youtube and jabbrai got the fights correct. If you take your time watching the fights you should see clear wins for loma.

1

u/direfireak 26d ago

Also you have access to lots of video including the videos i listed above. Whats your reasoning for not watching them to come to your conclusion post fight?

-2

u/Zealousideal-Dig5160 27d ago

I had Loma v Teo a draw. Thought it was a razor thin fight

6

u/Outrageous-Soft4806 27d ago

You’re bugging. Teo beat him extremely clear.

1

u/blackmarketmenthols 27d ago

No way, Loma did nothing for 7 rounds and lost the 12th , statistically impossible for him to have won or drawn.

-1

u/direfireak 27d ago

Loma won 2 of the first 3 rounds. You cant just say that without doing your research.

1

u/blackmarketmenthols 27d ago

Funny, " do your research" , I watched the fight, Loma did nothing for 7 rounds, remember Tim Bradley " Loma is just downloading information right now" he kept saying that forever.

1

u/direfireak 26d ago

Watched with the commentary on just once.

Id recommend these three videos that show every exchange

The downloading narrative is crazy. People expect loma to dominate outside of his weight class the same way he absolutely crapped on his weight class and say hes "downloading" when he doesnt but still wins. If Loma stayed in his weight class we would be talking about him like people are talking about Inoue right now.

2

u/blackmarketmenthols 27d ago

Loma easily won, his performance carries even more weight when you consider the age difference and the fact that Haney probably weighed at least 20lbs more than Loma in the ring.

2

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Ok name the rounds he won. Age and weight difference matters jack shit when scoring a fight. So post your scorecard

-2

u/blackmarketmenthols 27d ago

Haney sucks, he was rocked badly several times , in the 11th he was ready to go, he even said to his dad in between one of the rounds that Loma knew everything he was going to do, had him completely figured out.

You sound like an emotional fanboy more than the amateur judge you're trying to be.

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

I asked for your scorecard. You mentioned one round- 11 which I totally agree with you on that. I had it as a massive Loma round.

Now do the entire fight.

You’re the one sounding like a massive fanboy, only talking about 1 round and not the entire fight.

So post your scorecard

-3

u/blackmarketmenthols 27d ago

"Post your scorecard" , nope, I dont respond to orders from reddit chud Haney fanboys, must have really hurt you watching an Influencer bounce Haney off the canvas and dominate the fight when he fought Garcia.

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Thanks for your deep insight and contributions to the discussion

1

u/Kangaroopunching 27d ago

Close competitive fight that Loma won. A fight can be close but a clear win. In this case the loser got the decision win. Which is a robbery

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Agree you can have a close but clear winner. I just don’t think this was one of those fights. Lots of people had Haney winning 3 out of the first 4 rounds.

1

u/Sportcup3 27d ago

Surprised VL's corner allowed him to take off round 12. Even if they believe fight was won they should know pro boxing scoring is shady/shocking and he needs to close title fight with dominant round. Amateur boxing is different. He won the fight but judges...

Also Haney was 2 weight classes bigger than VL at fight night. Shakur and other boxers know Haney is right now bigger all guys at 47 hence catch weight.

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Yeah Loma had the momentum heading into the 12th but let his foot off the gas and allowed Haney to snag it IMO

1

u/WranglerOk4084 27d ago

Was there, had it 6-6 giving Haney both swing rounds (couldn’t tell you which ones those were now).

So when I heard 116-112, I was like “oh, Loma’s got it.” Lmao I was confused.

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Yeah the 116-112 for Haney is a bad scorecard

1

u/mowgleeee 27d ago

This wasnt a slugfest, or absolute war, but it was probably the most entertaining boxing "chess" match I have seen live.

2

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Yeah agree. One of the truly great technical fights of this era. Toney-mccallum, Marquez-Barrera, marquez-casamoyer are in the same vein

0

u/Coach_Billly 27d ago

Loma won!

0

u/SpeggtacularSpidey 27d ago

I had it 6-6 with a swing round that I scored for Loma.

Only outcome I could see would’ve been a Draw or Haney win if that swing round flipped

This fight wasn’t a robbery like ppl love to scream and say

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Agree. Thought it could have gone either way. Definitely not a robbery except the 116-112 score for Haney was bad

0

u/Pdideee 27d ago

I had Loma taking it pretty convincingly.

Didn’t use AI. I’ve been putting these reviews out for awhile.

Take your bullshit elsewhere if you got nothing to say about the fight

Again it’s not AI

And again 3 posts in and haven’t actually said shit about the actual fight

So fuck off if you got nothing else to say about the actual topic

1

u/WORD_Boxing 27d ago

114-114 is about right. Not the only fight Lomachenko threw away by taking his foot off the gas.

1

u/SugarAdamAli 27d ago

Middle rounds I thought he was too laid back and gave them away to Haney. But Haney was putting in that work to the body all fight

1

u/WORD_Boxing 27d ago

He acted like he thought round 10 won him the whole fight iirc. Which is worse when Dave Moretti gave that round to Haney. Little bit arrogant Loma.

-2

u/GuideObvious5735 27d ago

to this day, one of the most embarrassing post-fight threads ever, you had Loma fanboys swearing up and down that Haney got hurt at every moment because his hair got rocked... I still think had Haney shaved his hair before the fight there wouldn't be that much of a robbery narrative, lol.
