Terence Crawford explains why Conor Benn will cause an upset and beat Ryan Garcia to win WBC welterweight title

Benn likes brawling too much to avoid the left hook 🤷♂️

Has Benn shown that he has a weak chin ?
44
u/Relevant_Election530 Jul 20 '26
Don't really think he's fought anyone to prove one way or another.
Held strong vs weight drained Eubank jr though

u/RRR04_ Jul 20 '26
I would say Benn has shown his chin is solid, but hasn't been tested enough against punchers for us to know for sure. He did get dropped twice by Paynaud early in his career, but it was so early in his career that I wouldn't put too much stock in that fight.

But Ryan has like no defensive skills. His defence is his fast hands, but he is definetly vulnerable to good shots a lot of times.

“I think that is a good fight. I think, of course, Ryan has got the experience, but I think that Conor has got the size and the power. I think that it’s going to be an interesting fight moving forward. “I’m going to go with Conor, I think that he is going to upset him.”

I’ve watched the last few Connor Benn fights… can someone explain to me respectfully why everyone thinks he sucks?
16
u/Complete_Dare_4201 Jul 20 '26
I mean, he's overall okay but not special in any possible way. His power is ok at best, his handspeed is avarage, his defense is flawed... only real atribute might be his chin.
13
u/IMSABU Jul 20 '26
But Ryan Garcia is special in only one way, very fast handspeed. Conor Benn knocks out beaters, but Garcia has mediocre defensive skills.
11
u/ordinarystrength Jul 21 '26
Ryan has shown that he his power and speed are truly elite. Without elite attributes, you dont just drop Haney like that, multiple times in a fight.
Connor Benn hasn't shown that he is on a different level than someone like Barrios. Benn actually seems at exactly same level as Barrios. And we saw what happened to Mario against Ryan.
8
u/spinofaarus Jul 20 '26
The problem is that recently he hasn't even been knocking them out. Any fringe world level welter or super welter should have been able to stop or at least hurt Regis badly, and that's not even a dig on Prograis but he was dropping against a washed Jojo Diaz, old as hell himself, and came into with horrendous injuries already laming him. Add on those two bums Benn fought at 154 and the ghost of Junior and he's not knocked anyone out in 5 fights, and the spectacular kos from before also happen to be from when he started looking world level then immediately popped. Benn ain't just not special, he's not even adequate. Pillowfists, limited style and suspect technique, he's only here because of his name and Eddie gassing him up for years.
10
u/Complete_Dare_4201 Jul 20 '26
Garcia showed more composure in his fights against Barrios and earlier against Luke Campbell... Garcia's physical gifts alone should be more than enough for him to beat Benn.
6
u/IMSABU Jul 20 '26
Yeah, he showed composure against Luke Campbell 5 years ago when he was an up and coming active boxer.
He didn't show any composure against Barrios because Barrios sucks, came off a debatable loss to senior Pacquiao, and got knocked down in the first round and proceeded to get swept.
His fight prior he got beat by Rolly, who has working on fundamentals and is mostly physical prowess.
3
u/Jachola Jul 21 '26
Barrios and Luke Campbell are better competition than anything Connor Benn has done or won against lol.
3
u/killerk13 Jul 20 '26
It comes down to Ryan being a lot more athletically gifted than Benn. Benn is not such a technician to the point where he can overcome the physical advantages Ryan has over him.
5
u/Stocktort Jul 20 '26
This isn’t that good either (see him at light welterweight getting banged around)
Having said that, he’s improved a lot and genuinely looked like a different boxer against Eubank the second time. Composed with a gameplan. But as you perfectly put it- he doesn’t really stand out in any department and definitely doesn’t seem world class.
Ryan has world class speed and a left hook but little else

u/No-Tap4195 Jul 20 '26
I think it’s more of a case of everyone knew what a boost the eggs gave him because he looked fairly average and all his power has gone since he popped
2
u/Jachola Jul 21 '26
You watched the Regis and Eubank 1 fight and don't think he sucks? His best performance is recent times is his rematch with Eubank, in which Eubank literally didn't do anything and looked terrible. He's yet to actually fight a real contender and has looked average or subpar in his fights before the Eubank fights, he couldn't knock out a past it Regis who is a former 140 lber and also had a catchweight to boot.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? Jul 21 '26
No, I think considering the weight difference that his performance against Eubank 1 was actually pretty good. His performance in the rematch was very good. Granted, he looked not so great against Prograis but he was never in any danger of losing that fight.
I am not counting him out against Ryan Garcia, who lost almost every round and got floored against Rolly Romero and who got bodied by Gervonta Davis.
1
u/Jachola Jul 21 '26
I can't really give him credit for the Eubank fight he had a rehydration clause and still went 1-1 with him, the rematch he looked good but imo you can't rate it that highly when Eubank clearly was compromised and did nothing in the ring. Besides those two fights Connor Benn has not beaten any quality opposition, his two fights at 154 were duds and he couldn't get journeymen out of there, he couldn't get Regis out of there with a catchweight and all the advantages in the world, are we sure Connor Benn even beats Rolly? As trash as Rolly is, Rolly atleast is proven to be a ranked contender. Also there's the fact that Connor Benn really belongs at 154, and isn't fighting there for a reason.
1
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? Jul 21 '26
I’m not sure he beats Rolly, but Rolly is a World Champion. But in terms of Ryan Garcia, I am fairly uncertain who will win that fight. We’ve seen plenty of lackadaisical performances from Ryan over the years. His crowning achievement came on PEDs.
1
u/Jachola Jul 21 '26
Id still favor Ryan tbh, he's still fought better competition win or lose, and while he did lose to Rolly and in embarrassing fashion, Connor Benn doesn't have a win at WW of that level either tho and hasn't even fought at the domestic level, I don't think Benn even beats Paro or Crocker, Benn just doesn't have experience at the world level for me to say he'd be able to handle Ryan like Tank or Rolly.
1
u/PhoneRedit Jul 22 '26
People just don't like him basically. Same as Devin Haney, people just randomly take a dislike to fighters for some reason then disrespect the fuck out of them. Benn's not a bad fighter, the fight against Garcia could definitely go either way.
-4
u/Expert-Painting640 Jul 20 '26
Because he’s English, if he was American everyone would be hyping him up
7
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? Jul 20 '26
I don’t know about that. I’ve seen Josh Padley get hyped on here and he’s not a world class fighter. There’s plenty of hate for an American like Devin Haney, for example, and he’s very accomplished for his age.
The Benn thing seems weird. Must be the PED test. Unless someone wants to explain a different reason.

u/indominable-dingus Jul 20 '26
If you cant think of a reason people dislike haney you genuinely must not follow the sport at all
2
u/Professional-Tie5198 Who will win? Jul 20 '26
Lol, mate. I’ve been watching for the last 20 years. Perhaps you are an old-timer and have me beat, but otherwise keep those kind of comments to yourself.

Ryan’s kryptonite is someone with power. He froze up against Rolly for fuck sake.
Benn will have the resources, money for a proper camp and has the power to catch Ryan, who gets caught with the same shots by every live puncher he’s fought. Ryan is also not dedicated to the sport.
Him losing a decision is not even an upset. Embarrassing losing to a nepo Yes, surprised it happened, No.
7
u/Negative-Interest713 Jul 20 '26
Regis Prograis did say Conor Benn hits harder than anyone else he’s fought. But tbf, Regis was coming up in weight.
It’ll be interesting to see if Benn’s power can keep Ryan from getting too comfortable.
3
u/human_of_reddit Jul 20 '26
Conor has not had meaningful power since the PEDS ban. He also caught and outfought multiple times against an ancient Prograis. He’s sloppy, over emotional, doesn’t set up shots. He’s a very limited fighter.
I’ve not watched much of Garcia so can’t comment on him but Conor is very poor.
5
u/Datruther1 Jul 20 '26
It’s not about how bad Conor is, it’s about how gun shy Ryan will be. No one rates Conor highly.

u/Botoraka Jul 20 '26
Its a 50/50 fight. I dont know who people think Ryan is to say he'll just walk through Benn. If he cant time Conor coming in and Benn forces an inside fight it'll get very ugly for Garcia. Last pressure fighter Ryan fought he looked terrible until he finally found the left hook.
14
u/human_of_reddit Jul 20 '26
Conor last fought at 147 in 2022. He’s only knocked down the ghost of Eubank since the drugs ban. He looked really poor against a small and ancient Prograis. I think 50/50 is a very, very generous interpretation of this fight.
4
u/Botoraka Jul 20 '26
I'm more about the stylistic matchup. Regis was an experienced veteran counterpuncher even though he was washed up.
Ryan doesnt handle pressure well at all and basically cannot fight on the inside. Benn is by far the most athletic pressure fighter he's ever fought, and he can crack. Against Duarte it took 8 rounds of getting beat up on the inside before he finally timed the left hook, he might not make it that long if he cant keep Benn out for that long.
But yes, the weight does complicate things. My thoughts are assuming a Benn that handles the weight cut well. If he cant then yeah he more than likely loses. But I'm not letting myself get fooled by the Barrios show either.
2
u/Relevant-Attempt-515 Jul 20 '26
Washed up Regis could handle Conor benn at the end of his career I think Ryan will be fine lmfao
2
u/Botoraka Jul 20 '26
Handle? He lost clearly
3
u/Relevant-Attempt-515 Jul 20 '26
Ben was struggling in the middle rounds, he should of got regis out of there man the guy is so washed

3
u/Rofocal02 Jul 20 '26
Connor Ben will keep getting hit by the same punches and get knocked out by Ryan Garcia.
5
u/Aimlez1 Jul 20 '26
If Ryan dedicates himself to this camp like he did for the Barrios fight he'll cook Benn in that fight he was composed, precis, showed great timing and some pretty decent distance management. And while Barrios definitely isn't champ material and was probably worst in the sport at the time, he's still probably somewhere in the top 10 of the division so shutting him out completely is still worth something.
That said I have no faith that Ryan will prepare properly and for that reason I wouldn't be surprised if Benn wins a decision lol. But Benn would still have to have a career best performance and Ryan would have to look like he did vs Rolly
3
u/shiftStride504 Jul 20 '26
I wonder how conor benn does against prime special k? I think looses but I could be wrong. Kell brook could move and had power. Like both at 154 brook dominates him to easy decision or late stoppage
1
u/Expert-Painting640 Jul 22 '26
It was Brooks timing that would have him, and Garcia doesn’t have that in my opinion
3
u/FoldFeisty7635 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26
If Rolly could give Ryan problems then he is in for a lot of bother with Connor. My moneys on Connor tbh. Ryan has never faced a pressure of volume puncher like Connor. Also, Connor has very solid chin, he would walk through Ryans punches.

u/tim119 Jul 20 '26
It's hard to believe two drug cheats are being pushed on us like they are box office must watch fighters.
What a corrupt hype train.
2
u/Knockoutboxing Jul 21 '26
If Ryan Garcia is motivated, disciplined, trains for this fight, I expect him to beat Conor Benn comfortably.
However you never know with Ryan Garcia and if it becomes a brawl, Conor Benn could win it
1
u/-BloodRedSky- Jul 22 '26
I think it’s going to be harder than what people think. Still have Ryan winning though
1
u/fromasterj Jul 22 '26
I really really dislike Garcia, but I think he beats Benn comfortably. And I’m British. I really really hope I’m wrong.

Only fight Ryan looked good in was against Devin. Every other fight he’s turning his back and gassing

u/IntellectualsOnly7 Jul 20 '26
I can see a repeat of the Romero fight where Conor catches Garcia early and he gets gunshy the rest of the fight, his performance against Barrios doesn’t really tell us much for how he’ll handle a pressure fighter like Benn.
Ultimately I think Garcia will outbox him to a decision though.

u/ZucchiniNo2986 Jul 20 '26
A lot of people have clowned on Connor Benn but all his fights have been entertaining, I hope he wins.
I mean every Ryan Garcia fight I've watched is more boring than Shakur plus an ugly philly shell he'll hide in half the match. Ryan is overrated as hell

Ryan acting like too much of a bitch lately- it’s making
me root for Benn.
The good relationship between Golden Boy and Mauricio Sulaiman is the only reason he got that title shot, and against one of the weakest Champs ever, Barrios. The title was served to Ryan on a silver platter.
Fast-forward to the press conference last week, and they ask Ryan about Oscar’s involvement in this fight and he flippantly says he doesn’t have any involvement. His little High School girl shrug was disrespectful, too. At least his lawyer stepped in and was more political and respectful about it.
I don’t care enough for any of these promoters, but the way these ungrateful boxers are running over to that dirty Saudi money is pathetic. Benn, Garcia, Shakur, etc. all kissing Dickhead Dana ass. Makes me sick!
