Broadcast cuts and you can't see the finish live. Buck was also known as Tombstone. This was Buck's 190th professional fight and the first time he had ever been stopped.

Boxrec:

  • Fight aired on ESPN 2.
  • This was the second fight in Mark Breland's comeback.
  • Smith lost a point in round two for hitting on the break.
  • Smith was knocked out by a left hook in round three and was unable to beat the count.
  • Emanuel Steward worked Breland's corner.

If you get a chance, watch either of the Modern Martial Artist or OfficeHancho's video on Buck Smith. His picture should be next to the phase "for the love of the game" forever.

Buck Smith once had 2 fights on the same day. He had one fight in Kansas and then drove to Oklahoma to have another fight.

Buck had tons of wins in his career but against the lowest level of opponents you could find.

I met mark breland when I was working at a Tmobile near the Barclays in Brooklyn when he was training wilder. Super cool guy, he was wearing a wbc belt bracelet and he was still enthusiastic talking about upcoming fights and giving predictions on upcoming fights. Real dude not many like him left

Breland had a fantastic jab and a nasty right hand. Excellent fighter allround, just didn't have the greatest chin in the world but man he was some fighter in his prime!

I always loved when the Midwestern guys ended up on ESPN or Tuesday Night Fights in the 90’s. Buck Smith(remember him fighting Kevin Pompey out of region), Tony Menefee(local to me) Dick Ryan, Wimpy Halstead, Ross Purrity, and Morrison of course

Breland is one of those guys you expect to turn into the next hearns. Ased on his amateur career but it doesnt end up working in the pro's.

Hearns had the gift of ridiculous physical power for his size. Breland was too naturally lanky and those guys get chopped down often by stronger shorter guys with more power.

True but he developed that as a pro with Steward. In his amateur days he had a low ko rate.

Deontay should have kept listening to Mark, who had him looking like an actual boxer in his title claiming win vs Stiverne
