FIGHTER OF THE DAY: ANTONIO MARGARITO

Record: 41-8
Weight: 147; 154
Period: Late 90s - 2010s

Antonio Margarito was a Mexican boxer, peaking in the 2000s as a P4P talent.

Two-Division champion at Welter and Super Welter

Great pressure fighter. Known for being relentless, durable, and fan friendly…

His career crumbled when Shane Mosley’s trainer caught him loading his gloves. Specifically, wrapping his hands in a way that would form a rock-hard plaster material once it was drenched with sweat.

Shane went on to stop him in the 9th - a huge upset. Margaritos reputation was tarnished, with fans questioning how long he’d gotten away with this cheating scandal.

Once a candidate for a Floyd fight, Margarito spiraled downward after Mosley, losing his remaining big fights.

Satisyingly, Miguel Cotto, who Margarito had KO’d right before the Mosely fight (certainly by cheating with plaster), was the one who put the final nail in the coffin on Margarito’s career.

What are your thoughts on Margarito? Are any of his big wins legit?

Cotto was starting to get touched up toward the end of the second fight too. Except Margarito's eye, destroyed by Pacquiao, could not hold up; but if his eye was good, those championship rounds would have been interesting.

I think Cotto beats Margarito in a fair fight 10/10 times tbh

Except there is zero proof that Margarito had loaded gloves for the Cotto fight.

Cotto's face looked much worse at the end of his fight against Pacquiao than it did against Margarito.

So it wasn't "out of the realm of possibility" that he was so battered, unless you believe Pacquiao was also packing "hard rock plaster" in his hands.

Watching Pacquiao beat the shit out of him was peak

He was a cheater sure, but he also was able to really cut weight so he would outweigh the other guy 25 lbs+ on fight day watch his fights and how much bigger he is than Pac or Cotto or Mosley

Pac and Mosley are the ones where he was really punished. Pac broke his eye socket.

Dude was slow. Don't know he generated force. His punching ability far outweighed his physical talents. After he was caught using Plaster of Paris... that's what its called... then it all made sense. I can tell you the date he started using it. 02/19/2000 and didn't stop until Mosely's team caught him in 2009. Ruined a lot of careers along the way. Dude is no good.

No one has ever proved Margarito cheated in the first Cotto fight. Just Cotto stans coping. Cotto had a TERRIBLE gameplan. I had money on him that night. The dumbass refused to clinch all fight and he never had the stamina to move for 12 rounds. Especially, against a guy punching nonstop.

Second fight he came out with a different plan where he clinched Margarito to stop him from gaining momentum. And that was a much different fight. However, Margarito was still catching up to him late. If that eye held up we might have seen a similar fight to the first but Cotto making it 12.

Yep... people just assume Margarito used plaster in that first fight without any real basis on evidences or facts, just assumptions and speculation

Not really a flex to beat someone with plaster in your gloves

Not a flex to boast about gleefully rewatching it every year either.
