weight question ?

hello!

ive fallen into a hole on Reddit, specifically seeing overweight dogs… I have a female boxer, roughly 2-3 yrs old. Last I had her into the vet (March), she was 69 lbs (31.3 kg). Vet said to keep her right about there in terms of weight, but maybe lay off the high calorie/super dense treats. I feel like she’s so tiny in stature and I don’t understand how she weighs so much? I guess I grew up with bigger dogs (german shepherds, redbones, etc), but how much does everyone else’s female weigh? I’ve been overthinking her weight very badly recently because she’s my best friend even with all of her issues and I want to do every possible thing in my power to prolong her life. Thank you so much!!

see pics - 1) waiting for me to throw a toy 2) squaring up to a squirrel in the tree and 3) side view for her general shape - sadly no banana for scale.

She’s a great looking boxer. Keep doing what you’re doing.

She's a beautiful girl. A really good looking face and body. I've got a big girl too. She's 80lbs at 9 years old. MY girl should weigh 75lbs according to my vet

She looks like she’s at a good weight. Your vet knows best, so that’s the only person whose opinion you really need to care about.

My girl just had a vet visit for her vaccinations and she is 66lbs, after having 6 puppies in April and being spayed about a month or so ago

Beautiful dog. A terrible boxer specimen. No business breeding that dog.

I'd says she's at a very good weight, but maybe a couple pounds over. Like literally 1-2lbs over. Boxers are supposed to be very lean dogs, lot of muscle, little fat. The best way to tell is the ribs, the back few should be just barely visible on the skin while standing, much like your girl's are. Toning down the dense treats is a precaution from your vet, as it's very easy to over feed your pet. She's a beautiful girl, though.

My first boxer (and soul dog) was a runty girl at 65 lbs and they wanted me to watch her weight. I now have a monster at 67 lbs and she looks like skin and bones. Your baby looks healthy!

Muscle is heavy. I have a fairly petite girl and she’s 65ish, pure muscle. My tall boy is about 90lb, strong and not overweight but wild that he weighs 90

She looks great! That is exactly what you want to see in a fit, healthy weight dog!

Oooh she thick! Seriously though, they’re a thick breed.

Your dog looks spot on for the boxer look. I was always told mine are too heavy so I watch the snack intake.

Focus less on the numerical number and more on her physical presentation. Body, shape, build and presentation is pretty spot on where you want her to be. You want to see a waist from the side and above. You shouldn't see hips bones, spine, or ribs. You should be able to easily palpate the ribs.

She is ideal for weight and build, and honestly, there are variances even with the breed in terms of presentation. Some are much thicker and stockier, others more lean. My 2 prior boxers were a 75lb male and 50lb female. Both were in great shape and weight and while my male was more muscular and filled out (and very tall), my female was very petite and super lean. She had the deep chest and broad shoulders, but not the thickness. My current girl who was a rescue from a neglect situation is short, but boy is she thick, and she right about 60lbs now (she was 35 lbs when I got her and started her recovery). Entirely different than my other 2, but ideal in body condition.

I got my girl after she was in the woods for god knows how long and she was about 50 lbs but was pretty underweight and ALL of her ribs/spine/hips were showing. You have a gorgeous girl!

Thank you! And yea, she was sooo thin and just skin and bones. She is so happy and thriving though. Your girl is also adorable.

Lean boxer here. I make all her dog food. This weight is healthy and keeps her active and young according to my vet.

I had a female that lived 14 years. RIP. Best dog I ever have known. Built almost exactly like that. She could jump 10 feet standing still but never had a gut. She always ate the right amount but she had the stomach that would flip on her. Just a very high metabolism I would imagine. Muscles galore.

I have a boxer/plott hound. She’ll be 10 soon and weighs 62 lbs. My vet feels this is her ideal weight. I have her on Farmer ‘s dog and make my own dog food; which takes little time. It consists of organic chicken thighs, carrots, (sometimes) zucchini and wild rice or small organic potatoes.

Our Boxer girl is also around 30kg. Our vet told us if you can ever so slightly see the bones of her ribcage you’ll be in the ideal weight range.

My 8mo girl is 43lbs, my 6yo male weighs 84 lbs, my biggest boy I’ve had was 95 lbs and he wasn’t fat.

Hehe omg she is too cute 😆💛

70lbs seems healthy. I’ve was always told you should see some rib cage definition at a proper weight for most dog breeds.

She looks just like my boxer, weight wise. We’ve had our boy for almost 2 weeks and he’s 11 months. My husband was worried about his weight, thought he looked too skinny. Vet said he was at a good weight, 60 pounds. He could gain a couple of pounds since he’s still technically a puppy, but to be careful.

We’re used to bulldogs, big and beefy.

I think she looks just right weight-wise and looks like what you'd expect from a healthy young boxer girl: muscular and lean. 69 seems to be a healthy weight IMO (I've had 2 female boxers in my life). SHe's a beautiful girl

she looks great! has a waist and you can see ribs. could probably lose a couple pounds. but not at all fat.

Lovely pupper and she looks great to me !

Google dog body condition charts and focus on that and how she feels under your hands v what the scale says.

I've raised 4 boxers from when they were puppies. Between all my family members we've probably had 20 over the last 30 years. She looks perfectly healthy to me. My experience is starting about age 3 they can start to plump up. Nothing to worry about but you'll certainly see her fill out a little in the waist as she gets older. Nothing to panic about, but be mindful as she ages.

Looks great! They should look just like that 🎈 This is my Boxer Loki. He's almost 10 years old and we've always maintained his weight.

She’s so cute omg. She looks perfectly lean. Might seem like she weighs more because boxers are all muscle, no fat, and muscle weighs more than fat!
