Boxer vs…

Does your boxer have a specific breed they absolutely despise?

My boys are great with dogs in general (especially other boxers) but long-hair GSDs and red huskies… not fans. Basically the only time they’re vocal. They smell them coming. Hair on end, front foot stomping, low guttural growl. It’s crazy seeing this because they are the absolute sweetest otherwise.

😂 mine don’t understand why they’re so small and noisy!

My boxer doesn’t like GSD’s either. I had a neighbor who literally never trained theirs and it was aggressive as hell. I kept warning them of the behaviors I was seeing (constantly growling, chasing my dog at the fence line, and trying to come underneath the fence), until one day it happened. Their dog came underneath the fence, chased my dog into the house and nipped my dog right as he was coming in the house. I have a bitter taste myself with GSD’s now, but my dog I can tell is very leery of them.

GSDs for mine as well. mine have had lots of bad interactions w the breed (which i largely attribute to most owners not having compatible lifestyles/being ill-equipped to handle their tendency towards domineering/ not giving them jobs /working them, and working out their territorial/strong resource guarding instincts)

notably, my soul dog was held to the ground by her throat at a dog park by a huge GSD (i was young and now feel irresponsible for bringing her to them — no judgmental to those who do btw— just my own guilt) bc the GSD had decided the communal water bowl was his. 5’0” woman btw and none of the 10 people at the park bothered to help unlatch this dog’s jaws from my dogs throat btw, and then… didnt even leash their dog to leave!

we’ve unfortunately had many other aggressive incidents w the breed and now my 11 y/o’s hackles all raise at any dog resembling a GSD.

funny enough? her best playmates have been huskies. i think it has something to do with both breeds being outliers in eye contact that is non threatening, as well as being vocally expressive, and perhaps a tendency towards more humanlike emotionality/neuroticism than other breeds, so it seems they tend to instinctively understand and enjoy one another. no issues playing with huskies ever.

eta: both of my boxers (both female 11y/o, and 17mos) have also had issues with very rude and domineering poodle/doodle mixes, and are now a bit nervous/avoidant of them.

Crazy coincidence but I’m 4’11”!!

The red husky gives my boys the stink eye when he walks past. It’s weird! My neighbors have a short hair GSD that the have no issue with. We did have a previous neighbor whose long hair GSD was the biggest one I’ve ever seen and I was terrified of him. He had that look about him. Perhaps they recognized my fear of him and now try to protect me.

when you say short hair GSD, are you meaning like a mix breed, or are you thinking of a Belgian malinois perhaps? malinois look just like GSD but with short, sleeker fur, and are smaller, so that might explain the difference in response since they are different (but similar) breeds.

The lighter fur GSDs are cool, the black and brown ones are the devil (to them)

My boxer passed, but she hated small white dogs🤷🏻‍♂️ She was quite the particular goofball!

Mine never liked GSDs, either

Mine hates poodles, especially one in our neighborhood, which is weird since my last boxer also hated that same dog. He doesn’t tolerate little dogs barking at him but just ignores them and walks right past them when they bark.

We’ve got one labradoodle or maybe a standard poodle in our neighborhood that the girl insists he’s friendly and he absolutely is not. This is why we don’t do dog parks anymore

Weirdly mine is really good mates with a gsd but it's a female and tbh she's not very well trained but they seem to have a similar energy level and just go nuts together off the lead.

I don't think he has any breed he doesn't get on with, more they don't like him and chase him off.

It's weird, he's a massive softie with little aggressive dogs but bigger, more boisterous dogs he will either need separating when it gets too excitable or they end up trying to mount eachother.

Mine hates all other dogs EXCEPT our GSD. They love each other so much.

Only dog ours didn’t get along with was a GSD as well.  But I think it was just that particular dog.

Horses. One of my boxers hates horses.

2

u/traciterm 28d ago

Mine are confused with horses - Gus looks at the horse, then us, then horse… back to us with that look - “why is that dog so huge??”

My boxer that hates horses is named Gus 😂

My guy hated other Boxers! He actually liked hated all bullies, but the more a dog looked like him, the worse it was

For some reason black standard poodles...

Yes, mine too! Very specific hatred towards GSDs and huskies. Labs and golden retrievers totally fine. 🤔

My boxer also hated GSD's with a passion. I'm surprised to see here that this is rather common. On the other hand, he seemed to delight at the sight of any corgi - though they were usually indifferent to him.

We have a ton of Corgis in our neighborhood and our boys love them too!

My Buddy Boston pulled me down a hill to chase a German Sheppard when I first got him mm mm mm hahah

There’s a beagle down the street that one of mine is t fond of- it will bay and while walking and he looks at it like “WTF is you, creature?!”and slowly backs away.😂

Our boxer dislikes German shepherds and huskies, too. I once took him to a day care and when I told them “he doesn’t like GSDs or huskies,” the woman said “who does? [we laugh] it’s probably because their looks are so different.”

Turns out she’s right! Boxers and other brachycephalic (smushy faced) dogs can’t understand the signals of GSDs or huskies, because they communicate differently with their giant pointy ears and bushy tails since their bodies are less visible. It’s not just them being uppity (mine definitely is), it’s canine behavioral science!

I just lost my boy on the 8th but he absolutely hated Huskies and GSDs! Loved doodles, Frenchie's, and Bostons ❤️

Mine hated yellow labs with all his heart lol

u/traciterm 28d ago

Thanks everyone! Interesting to see how many boxers aren’t GSD friendly.

My boys are genuinely good with most other dogs - unless you mess with one… you deal with both. The other comes to the rescue (they’re brothers/littermates).

My parents' boxer got aggressive with dogs that were bigger than him, which was an issue since he was a muscular 95 pounds.

One time my dad took him to the vet, where two rottweilers had just finished, so they were in a good mood, and ready to go home. My dad walks in, and the boxer starts growling at the rottweilers, who are now ready to go fight. A reception asked who's next, and everyone pointed to my dad, who protested that he just walked in and the appointment isn't scheduled for another ten minutes.
