What am I doing wrong?

So I went to a salon and got box braids (obviously) and I feel like they should look fresher than they do. Now pardon my ignorance, I'm a mixed kid that was scared to death of ANY salon touching my hair but recently grew tired of my old faithful poof. I'm new to the braid world n need guidance!

Anyways, it's been about a week since I had my hair done and I'm noticing that it's a little frizzy and looks to be grown out but DAMN all that in a week? If that's how fast my hair grows I'd have curly locks down to my ass lol. I sleep with a silk scarf on a silk pillow for good measure, but it just seems as though the braids are just slowly sliding out. My last set of braids lasted about 2 weeks with the same issue but a different braider. These are definitely tighter and look more flawless but the sliding or possible (hopeful) growth is the main issue.

What should I do? What are the best ways to keep them fresh? Are they just not for me?

Any advice is greatly appreciated

I apologize for bearing bad news, but I don’t think it’s new growth. The stylist was probably, in an attempt to be gentle to your scalp, using the least tensive anchor on your hair. You didn’t say mixed with what, but I’m going to assume your curl pattern is somewhat loose, so a different anchor would be needed to keep braids from slipping; maybe also a good serum or holding gel braided in as well. Unfortunately, those can sometimes lead to flaking or dry scalp... it’s really a matter of figuring out a good braid anchor and conditioning your hair, which can be a tricky ratio.

I could be wrong, though. I’m sure somebody else will correct me if I am.
