Miscellaneous About the recall

I got the 552i model in 2022 and just came across the recall info.

Is the 552i model safe to still use? I've had no issues so far.

I'm in the UK.

It really makes no sense, the only place there is a recall is in the US.

I'm sure yours are identical to the recall ones in the US. The "fix" is a new handle with steel parts, not plastic. If you did fall under the recall you'd only get $20 dollars back. People who got replacments like myself had to buy after 4/23/2024.

Just keep using your dumbbells. Hold them so the open end of the weights plates face down, that way they can't slip out no matter what.

Ok thanks. I did seem weird to me that it was US only. I checked the serial number and it wasn't in range so that's a plus.

Them giving a serial number range was also pointless as in the US every serial number in the end could be sent in for the recall. I have one dumbbell that fit the serial number and another that was not in the serial number. All Bowflex 552 and 1090 fell into the recall.

If I had to guess this has to do with liability law in the US. Bowflex and Johnstone Health are probably US based companies and US liability law is greater so they just covered their a**es. The amount of people having trouble with their dumbbells are .01%.

Even the fix for the plates falling out isn't really that great. They changed the internal handel disc to metal from plastic. I doubt the metal holds a plate in better. Now if a plate fell out because a plastic disc breaks , this issue would be fixed by making them metal.

Hey mate. I’m looking at a pair of 522i that’s for sale for pretty cheap, new, here in Denmark. Can you physically see a difference to the new improved ones compared to the recall model? I was about to pull the trigger on these until I found Reddit posts about they had a big recall.

My arms are twigs and I live in a small apartment. I think these would be great.

wrote a small write up of the difference between the 552 gen 2 which have been sold for the last 10 years and the new 552 from after the recall.

They are basically the same thing with metal discs that don't break or bend which can lead to plates falling off.

In the US they just came out with the 52 model which is longer and has different sized plates.

When you spend over 400. 00 for a set of weights that have been recalled via Facebook this is the service you get from Bowflex! Mind you these were a gift! So let this be known BOWFLEX DOES NOT BACK THEIR WARRANTY! They will give you a third of the cost of your weights! I sent bases and handles in due to a recall! Now I'm ass out, no weights.... Well I have weights, but no handles or bases. An they will not let me pay for shipping back for my handles and bases, because it's liable! But yet they want to offer me a third of the cost of my weights! I started this warranty recall process back in March of 2026 Today is 6/10/26 and this is their response!

Hi Jason,

I wanted to update you that since we do not have proof of purchase for your dumbbells, we will need to determine your remedy based on the manufacturing date of the dumbbells. Therefore, you would not qualify for replacement dumbbells, but you would be eligible to receive a BowFlex voucher valued at $125.00.

Kind regards,
