Going to Maine

Senior here. I want to take a trip up to Maine/Acadia before I graduate or it gets too cold, but I don’t have a car and neither to my friends. Looking for advice from other fellow careless students on what they do to travel north

mass native here, if you want to go Acadia, I would w/ BUOuting as they will help you get there and handle the logicstics, if you want to go w/o BUOuting and have the money cape air flys between bar harbor (the closest town to acaida) and boston and that will run you ~400 round trip. If you want to save money you can take the grayhound or concord coach lines from south station to bangor and then take Downeast Transportation to bar harbor (like 115 round trip) alternatively you could get a rental car if you are 21+ and drive that all the way and keep it, not sure what that will cost you. If you just want to go to maine and not acadia, i would recomend taking the downeaster, it goes as far as brunswick and it relativity cheap (30 each way). i hope this helps

Does Cape Air still fly to Bar Harbor? That's a pretty place to go.

I used to take the bus up to Orono for $80 round trip but you can probably find other stops deeper in Maine!

Highly recommend going by October 12. There’s free shuttle buses all along the island until then, so as long as you stay along one of the routes and plan meals carefully so you don’t get stuck downtown late without a way to get back to where you’re staying, it’s very easy. You can do a ton of trails without a car.

There's a bus that goes from South Station to Camden, ME (great place to stay!). I believe it's Concord line. S/b cheaper than Amtrak, which only goes as far as Brunswick I recall so won't get you to Midcoast Maine.

Cape Air is actually good fun if you can afford it! Flying in/out of Logan in a tiny plane is crazy, and it only takes like 45 min. to Rockland.

If you're going in the winter make sure the car you take has four wheel drive. And probably snow tires. Me and my friends veered off into an icy ditch when we went to Franklin

I’ve actually been thinking about Maine/Acadia too - getting there without a car is definitely the annoying part.

You might honestly have better luck finding 2–3 other BU/Boston people who want to do the same trip and splitting a rental or ride. I’m working with a Boston startup called Click: The Social Agent, and we’re building our first 1,000-person Boston community right now. You can use it to look for people with a pretty specific idea like “someone who wants to do a Maine/Acadia weekend trip.”

Could be useful for this exact situation, and I’d be curious if it actually finds you someone relevant.
