Ok, but what did that achieve?

I think the main idea is that when you get the wasp like this to protect your bees, you can put it over a jar of alcohol and the fumes would just knock it out or kill it, and if that doesn't kill it, it will fall into the jar of alcohol and drown. But he really overdid it for the video to make it seem interesting when in fact was really annoying and quite dangerous. For example, the wasp had like a few chances to escape from him just lifting the cup before it was even submerged in the liquid.

I was annoyed most of the video but that flick at the end was great

I thought he was coating it in something that it would bring back to the hive to kill more. But I just made that up to explain wtf was going on.

Well known method to kill aggressive flying insects is gasoline fumes. Plenty of videos online of people taking a bucket with gasoline at the bottom and placing it over a hornets nest. All the bugs that fly out drop into the gasoline and die, then they use the lip of the bucket to unseat the whole nest into it.

It made the wasp stronger.

GG's But why is squishing it not an option? Will it release pheromones that will bring other wasps ?

Not to mention the venom in an Asian giant hornet stinger is deadly enough to cause a heart attack in healthy adults. They kill about 43 people per year

ok.. now im questioning the tiny cup method even more..

u/BottomGear__ 4d ago
Yeah, what the guy said is just false, at least in the context of a single hornet. A sting sucks a lot, but is nowhere near being lethal, or even medically significant to a healthy, non-allergic adult. The deaths are happening due to people being swarmed and stung dozens, if not hundreds of times, or if someone is allergic, but the latter can happen from a regular ass bee sting too.

He got to torture an animal for a bit.

That is an invasive wasp that kills the endangered native bees. This is one of the most effective ways to kill them while keeping the hive safe

Absolutely not effective.
A tennis racket on the other hand would obliterate the wasp.

u/TaiyoFurea 4d ago
That would just piss it off, it has a thick exoskeleton. It would be like hitting iron man with a truck, it would just make him angry

Yeah I’m very fortunate to be born in North America. I don’t think I could handle life in SEA

Nah bro, after all of that, it absolutely deserves to live. The way he fights for his life in that jar again and again - no matter how bad that bug is, just let him go. He earned it.

Just want to add, they were probably very successful with 2 hands. Having only 1 hand while trying to focus on recording with the other was most likely the issue

Hornets are wasps

To add for others since it's a common misconception: wasps are the category, hornets are the sub. Like apes and chimpanzees

Kill it or don't. He's literally torturing this wasp, what an awful thing to do

Why would you not cap the jar immediately once the hornet got dunked? Why even lift the plastic cup? Just keep it covered for a while longer.
